Marco Scutaro
Now I'm not familiar with some of the more complicated statistics, but judging from what's easily available, it would seem that shelling out money and draft picks on Marco Scutaro would be a similar mistake to Julio Lugo. Theo's tripping up in his old age, Gonzo should have been a done deal, even if he was a back-up. Scutaro is going to cost money, years, and draft picks, and he has only ONE good year in his career. He also has very limited experience playing for a big-market team (this could be good or bad for him). Why don't the Sox trade for someone like Maicer Izturis or Cristian Guzman-we'd all like Hanley, but unless Florida has a sudden change of heart, he's not available. Anyway, these guys won't cost as much, and they (esp. Maicer) are much more proven than someone like Marco Scutaro.

Christian Guzman? Really?

No on Scutaro.
Unless it’s a superb, team-favoring deal, Theo will get burned (again).

No problem with Theo making an offer, problem with signing Scutaro
I have no problem with Theo making an offer. He should offer 2yr/16M.When Scutaro scoffs at our offer and Theo signs him to more then he is worth is when I have a problem with Theo’s decision.
even 2/16M is harsh
considering the draftpicks. and he might just roll back to his Oakland play at any instant.

I have no problem with waiting
but if Scutaro gets arbitration and accepts, I think we’d lose out on a 0 million 1 year deal unless we signed Holliday first.
Are there any good SS prospects blocked by established stars in the bigs?
Or perhaps good SS prospects who are overshadowed by even better SS prospects in the same system?
Just trying to explore all options now.

Mets have Reese Havens. I liked him when he was on USC.
Not sure what they have planned for him though and he’s only like 20 so he would take at least a year or two to develop. Almost better off waiting for Iglesias.

right now
I’m all for everett. My idea is start Lowrie in AAA to give him time to develop his lefty swing if spring training is not enough, then a month or two in, bring him in as the main ss and use Everett as an amazing utility guy.
I feel like I’ve rarely heard of a good ss prospect getting overshadowed. I feel like it’s possible, just usually the go somewhere to 2nd base or something
Reid Brignac???
I am assuming Bartlett will still be at SS and Zobrist at 2B. I don’t know if the Rays would want to trade in the division though.
Yeah Brignac
But he’s never really impressed too much above A ball. I kinda discount him because I think he’d cost way too much in division. I think the jays were looking at him but the cost was too high. Apparently anthopolous is trying to get a monopoly on shortstops…

Is the concern about Jed's lefty swing based on his splits in the majors, or the injury recovery?
The former isn’t really worth noting, based on his balance in the minors – it was just the result of having a broken wrist. If his wrist is fine in spring training, go for it.

all injury
i realize that was all from injury, as long as he’s recovered, he should be back to hitting great from both sides.
Still my very favorite moment of 2009 was the last game against the indians, I was sitting over by third base when Lowrie came up with the bases loaded and I said to my friends "if he can hit a grand slam now from the lefty side of the plate, his whole season is redeemed. And he did.
I think Lowrie’s great, I hope he doesn’t end up completely screwed and recovers.
Haha, awesome.
Just making sure you weren’t just going off his majors splits without considering the context.

Can Jose Eglesias be ready yet?
Like now please? That would be great, thanks.

I'll be very happy with a healthy Jed Lowrie
The Sox can sign someone like Adam Everett as insurance.

With a healthy Jed. I’d just feel better if one of our other prospects were ready too.

He's an Ig isn't he?
All the more reason for him to get ready, this way people will see his name more and spell it correctly.

Now Gordon Edes is saying (not sure I believe this) that the Jays might not offer him arbitration. if that’s the case, then I wouldn’t mind so much 2/16M
"We're not going to give up," It doesn't happen, so who cares? There's always next year. It's not like it's the end of the world."-Manny Ramirez
8 mill a year
is wayyyy too much for a guy who has had one great year. I have no doubt he’ll probably do well nexy year, but not $8 million worth of well.
Gordon Edes is just speculating. I’m sure they’ll offer it because they really want the draft pick, he really wants a multi-year, which he won’t get through arbitration, and if he did accept and ended up with them, they could always trade him and we’d almost certainly take on the salary. Really very little risk for them.
Marco Scutaro…you must be kidding. Theo, this is another lugo-loogie. Mediocrity will not cut it in the AL East.
Scutaro
Exactly…he did just fine and collected a nice salary. But he is not championship caliber. And if the Sox are going to win they need a great shortstop like the Yankees.
Jeter
Had the second best year of his career last year, which is probably unlikely to duplicate itself. He also makes $21 million a year, compared to the $5 million Scutaro will be getting from us, which gives us a lot more flexibility than paying someone like that would (IF there were even any available). The fact is, Scutaro is the best ss available this year- you can’t just make em appear by wanting one. There is no team which is comprised entirely of the best players at their relative positions. Scutaro is not championship caliber in that he, himself won’t win us a championship, but he is in that if he is close to last years success, he will easily be contributing to making an already strong team even better.
For the record, in 2009, Scutaros “nice salary” was $1.5 million after bonuses. Compared to Jeter’s $21 million. If they performed on the same level, that would be sad.
Well I hope that you are right and that we don’t just get what we pay for. The point about Scutaro never playing in a pressure market is a good one. Time will tell. But this shortstop situation has gone on for a long time. The middle positions are key. Catcher is finally looking good now that Varitek is out to pasture. Ellsbury is an excellent center fielder and Pedroia continues to play beyond his natural physical ability. But shortstop remains a weakness. As BTLove said, it is possible to win without a superstar at ss, but I would like to see a leader at that spot.
it would be great
and hopefully in not too long there’ll be a more permanant leader there. Just isn’t really anyone available now. Maybe Hanley in a year or two if he’s still cranking at the same rate. Maybe a prospect will work out.
