Sox Claim RHP Robert Manuel Off Waivers
MLB.com is reporting that the Red Sox have claimed right handed reliever Robert Manuel off waivers from the Seattle Mariners.
Manuel, 26, made his major league debut this season for the Cincinnati Reds, pitching 4.1 scoreless innings, allowing 5 hits, a walk, and striking out two. Most of his year was spent in AAA, where he posted a 2.88 ERA over 65.2 innings, recording 49 strikeouts and allowing 16 walks. This came after a breakout 2008 where he managed a 1.25 ERA over 86.2 innings, primarily in AA.
Since signing as an undrafted free agent in 2005, Manuel has a 2.88 career ERA (funny how numbers work out that way...) over 368.1 innings, with a career K:BB of 339:66. The high strikeout rates should help him in Fenway, and the low walk rates will help anywhere.
Manuel is likely to be a back-of-the-bullpen option, while the Red Sox see if they've found a bargain who can translate his good minor league performance into success in the majors.
Also mentioned in the article is that the Red Sox have finished their 40-man roster movements by adding Manuel.

Interesting
Manuel seems like a Minor Lifer. It’s not good when you make your debut at 26. Nevertheless, his numbers are solid. Let’s see how he does in the spring…

This might have just been something an assistant suggested.
Theo probably asked him to make a quick, 5 minute case for claiming Manuel, and was impressed enough to sign off on it. Not like it was a huge move that would have diverted his attention for the entire day.

40 man roster is complete, meaning...
that the Sox have left Yamicco Navarro vulnerable? I find that a little surprising.

but tonight was the deadline to protect players for the rule 5 draft.
So Navarro, Kris Johnson, Zach Daeges, Jorge Jimenez and Ritchie Lentz (among others) are all available for any team. I could see a few of those guys getting drafted.

I guess they're risking it
Based on the idea that not many teams would be willing to give a spot on the 25 man roster to a guy who can’t hit AA pitching yet.
Still, a risk.

Little surprised at Lentz as well, personally
A team with a really bad bullpen might just pick him to try him out

Yup.
I could see him getting drafted for sure.

I would imagine the idea there
Is that Manuel is better than Lentz, so they may as well use him on the 40-man instead of Lentz.
