Jason Bay rejects Sox offer

According to Jon Heyman from SI Jason Bay has rejected the Sox contract offer of four years worth 60 million dollars. They have until Midnight tonight to bang out a deal. Bay's agent has said that they will not get a deal done soon but they will remain in contact. Bay does not seem likely to give the Sox any discount. It seems that the Red Sox have offered him a fair deal. This wouldn't be the first time they have lost out on a player's services because of an unwillingness to go the extra mile though Bay seems a bit selfish here.

I think he's just curious

since it’s probably the one big chance in his life at free agency. Probably just wants to see what else is out there. I feel like it was pretty clear from the beginning that he wouldn’t accept anything until he gets to talk to other teams

It is risky...

The Sox may offered him much less in if he doesn’t find a better offer, because the Sox FO tries not bid against themselves. It doesn’t sound like Bay wants to stay in Boston. 4 year/ $60 mil is a pretty good deal. There are two team who can offer better terms than that right now, and both are in New York. The Mets need to look for pitching, but they have a hole in LF.

I agree

I think this may be one of the best offers Bay is gonna get. The Giants are out on Bay/Holliday. The Cards will probably not sign either one, same with the Phillies. The Yanks appear to be content with Damon/Matsui (although i better not speak too soon, they could sweep in last minute). That leaves the NY Mets. I see them signing Holliday over Bay.
It just seems like more teams are trying to cut back. I don’t think Bay will get the 5 years that he’s looking for.

He just wants to test the market. That is fine. Also, he might think that the market will be better after Holliday signs and teams get desperate.

um no..

Boras is all about putting an artificial anxiety to a team negotiating a deal. He is not going to make a deal that isn’t his set price. If the market won’t accept it or a team wants concessions, he draws out negotiations.

Holliday’s choice for the best money is to three teams, MFY, the Mets and the Sox. Many other teams can’t bid. The Angels looked like they kind of shunning Boras, or his mega deals. The Cubs have their own money problems, and the Dodgers are beyond turmoil at this moment.

The only team that can offer more than 4/60 is the MFY, and they will if they really want Bay.

With Giz?

Yup. But in my short time here, it certainly seems like he would feel more strongly one way or another. ;)

If Heyman says so ......

This is hardly news as Epstein confirmed Bay’s intent earlier in the day but the sourcing on this story leaves something to be desired so I wouldn’t put too much stock in that 4/60 number. I say that because John Heyman is a COMPLETE HACK who I am sure manufactures stories, invents primary source material and ascribes anonymous quotes to figments of his imagination. Would you expect anything different from a guy who SI plucked from a second-rate Long Island tabloid? And if you don’t believe me, just listen to him speak on air for five minutes. He is an absolute novice and the closest comp that baseball has to the New York Daily News’ football guy, Gary Myers.

I have to admit

that you may be right. I was surprised at the rumoured offer being only for 4 years. Bay is young enough and consistent enough that I don’t think they’d be averse to offering 5 years. It seems that length of contract is almost always the big sticking point with these guys and Epstein knows that. I just dont’ believe he’d short the offer like that.

I won’t be surprised to see him get 5 for 80 or thereabouts, whether from the ’Sox or somebody else.

Except he's going to have to be a DH pretty soon, and he's going to keep breaking down from there.

Papi’s being paid too much right now, so why would we want to pay Bay even more in a few years?

Except Bay isn't a home grown prospect.

Yeah, both wanted to see what they could get on the open market. Most players do, unless they think they can get more money out of their current team by signing early. What happens if Bay gets zero interest at his current asking price? He has to start lowering it, and we could come back with the same offer, or one even lower, if no one steps up.

Ha.

Yeah, I think Nomar rejected the exact same amount in the spring of 2004. Funny to think that if he had accepted, we would have been paying Nomar $15M up until last year and probably would not have won any World Series. Thank you Nomar.
