Around SBN: Kobe Bryant Isn't Up To Speed On Jeremy Lin, 'Linning'

The Sox love their new Cuban shortstop, Jose Iglesias. Epstein said that as they search for a shortstop for this season, it's with the knowledge that Iglesias is the shortstop of the future.

Makes sense to me.

At worst we have a Varitek- hitting Omar Vizquel with proficient speed. And the upside is…well, obvious. So with those words out of Epstein’s mouth, I’d expect Lowrie on opening day.

Is he fast?

I only know he is gifted with the glove.

Pretty fast

Not really plus-plus speed, but I’ve read that he’s pretty smart about his speed and should have plus to plus-plus range, along with incredibly fast hands, although maybe not the strongest of arms.

Hence my usage of the word "proficient"

Iglesias is 19.

He’s probably three or four years away from making it to the majors.

That gives Lowrie plenty of time to establish which SS he’ll be (Starting Shortstop or Super Sub).

by lone1c on Nov 10, 2009 11:33 PM EST up reply actions

agreed

Jed is destined to be the utility guy… even before the wrist I was skeptical.

We actually just broke down three possible rookie SS that the Sox might consider trading for… click over and tell us what you think.

by bottomlinesox on Nov 11, 2009 1:28 PM EST up reply actions

Why?

If he can hit .750 OPS and be an above average fielder, he would be one of the best SS’s in the league. I think those numbers are within his grasp if he gets healthy, (and yes bs, I know the mismanaged injury was not his fault).

best short stops

To be among the best SS in the AL, he’ll need to post the following:

.850+ OPS, .300+ BA, 20+ HR, 65+ RBI, 85+ R, 30+ 2B, 15+ SB

I don’t see that happening and that’s what the Sox need right now with Ortiz and Lowell on the back nine…

That link you provided is wrong about a few things

Michael Young was not a SS this year. Elvis Andrus was, and he didn’t exactly tear the cover off the ball.

But a .750 OPS from Lowrie would still put him in the Top 10 AL, and considering A. Gonzalez won’t give us that, and guys like Scutaro had career years, why exactly would we complain about that? A .750 OPS and above average defense would be a great help to the team next year, count on it.

The question isn’t whether they would make Lowrie a good asset, it would, it’s about whether you believe he can actually put that up over an entire season.

I'm not big into BA, RBI, or R as benchmarks for reasons you probably know,

The .750 OPS would have put him right in the middle this year, but it was also a good year for SS’s. Last year, he would have been third in the league. But fielding should definitely be taken into account. If he performs above-average he would propel himself above some of those guys.

More importantly, there is little reason to believe that those guys you list will be any better than Jed Lowrie. We have the guy and he is cheap; no reason to give up assets to get another unproven shortstop. That said, I have little trust in Jed’s health. We need someone in case he never recovers from the wrist. I would prefer a veteran that does not mind splitting time for that role. Alex GOnzalez seems fine.

Success. Thanks, man.

Reasonable since Andrus was only 20

Let's not get too worked up yet.

The kid has only played a few games so far state-side.

Im saying two years on the fact of his upside. Everyone says he is the SS of the future….if he is he will play in 2 years

Hopefully.

But a lot of these guys never even sniff the majors.

i mean we know the guy is going to hit somewhat….they have invested in the guy and call him the SS of the future….so obviously the scouts see something great in the guy….but i guess it could all be a bust but i seriously doubt it

My point is that we know very little. Look at what Lars Anderson did this year after being touted as one of the best prospects in the game. Guys bust out all the time. Between Iglesias, Gibson, Renfroe, Tejeda and Navarro we have a lot of high-upside, young SS’s. One of these guys should work out, and Iglesias seems like the most likely.

Iglesias was 4-for-4 tonight

Nice to see him making some contact in the AFL.

Kalish also with his first HR as well.

Including a walk and a walk-off.

Took 14 total pitches in his first 2 ABs, 3 total between #3 and #4, and 4 in his fifth.

Included a “pop up double”. I’m going to read this as a soft fly over his head combined with smart baserunning and speed instead of horrible defense, because it’s nicer that way.

by Ben Buchanan on Nov 12, 2009 12:00 AM EST up reply actions

Hey, 14 pitches through the first 2 AB's is a good sign

Even if he didn’t reach on those, still good to see him take some pitches.

for Iglesias?

great… looked like plate discipline was the thing he needed to work on most- hopefully that means he’s progressing already. let’s bring him up this year!
