I'd take the rested players
Over the tired ones who played meaningless games with a playoff berth clinched. They needed to be nearly perfect while the Yanks play .500 ball for the Sox to tie the division.
They rested their players to get ready for the postseason. Perfect decision if you ask me.

terrible fielding by Ellsbury
In a 1-run game, with runners on 1st and 2nd, it’s his job to make sure that nothing gets over his head. He failed.
He’s really got to make an effort to learn how to field better. He’s haphazard and relies on his speed far too much.

Yes!
Papelbon as John ‘Bluto’ Blutarksy:
What? "Over"?
Did you say "over"?
Nothing’s over until we decide it is!
Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?
Hell, no!
-Germans?
-Forget it, he’s rolling.
And it ain’t over now.
’Cause when the going gets tough…
(Patriotic instrumental music)
the tough get going! Who’s with me?
Let’s go! Come on!
(Papelbon screaming)
(Tense instrumental music)
What the f*** happened
to the Red Sox I used to know?
Where’s the spirit?
Where’s the guts?
This could be the greatest night
of our lives… but you’re gonna let it be the worst.
"We’re afraid to go with you, Pap,we might get in trouble."
(Shouting) Just kiss my ass from now on.
Not me! l won’t take this!
C.C. is a dead man!
-Peralta: dead! Martinez —
-Dead.
Papelbon’s right.
Psychotic… but absolutely right.
We have got to take these bastards.
We could fight them with conventional weapons.
That could take years…cost millions of lives.
In this case…I think we have to go all out.
I think this situation absolutely requires…
a really futile and stupid gesture…be done on somebody’s part.
We’re just the guys to do it.

The biggest problems this season were the gambles on the starting pitching.
In hindsight, the low-risk, high-reward move turned out to be a disaster on Theo’s part.
The struggling offense I can’t quite explain. It always seems to be one hit short of a big inning.
by lone1c on Oct 10, 2009 12:29 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
But at the end of the season, it all worked out.
The postseason was not effected by the risk-reward moves.

why? we still made the postseason
by German Red Sox Fan on Oct 10, 2009 12:30 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
The Sox could have had a serious shot at winning the division
If they hadn’t gambled so much on Smoltz and Penny.

Christ
I’m actually writing a piece about trade value of various Sox. I hate everything right now.
by USG on Oct 10, 2009 12:30 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
don't
Seriously, don’t.
This kind of comment baffles me. It’s like anything that happened more than a week ago has vanished from people’s minds.
There’s plenty of time to do crap like that in December. If you’re depressed, turn off the TV
by RickD on Oct 10, 2009 12:33 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well, yeah, it has.
Because your postseason record is all that matters. We’ve got a great team, but as far as I can see, we’re screwed. I know we’re capable of winning 3 straight, but right now we’re looking dead.
by USG on Oct 10, 2009 12:35 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Was definitely not going to post it, mind.
I recognize that’s not something you can do.

buck martinez
now praising Scioscia for using a pinch runner for a man who’s had knee surgery.
I’m sure that was a toughie to figure out.

OMG WE WIN
Martinez nails a runner!

Randy there's no way I can do a link drop tonight
I’ll try to write some stuff for tomorrow afternoon, but someone else will have to rock Bs.uf’s baby. Where the hell is he anyway? He was AWOL in the playoffs last year too…

I can try to fill in.
I’ve got 0 expectations for sleep. I’m not sure how one goes about compiling such links, but hell.
Can’t say I’ll keep my pessimism completely in check though.

Want to grab it?
That’d be awesome.

Basically all you do
Is search around for relevant Red Sox links
by Randy Booth on Oct 10, 2009 12:39 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, I know.
Might go about it somewhat differently though. I feel like, barring a crazy rally, we’re all gonna need some perspective or pick-me-ups.

Okay
I’ll grab the game recap. Feel free to post that for 5 a.m.

I too think you should call it something other than BSL
it is kind of creepy

I hope Victor is still amped from his throw to 2nd. We NEED a leadoff hit
Ells is batting .286 and is far and away the big bat.

Ells needs OBP most of all.

not to suggest that he was far behind it
but Bay had taken strike 1 by the time Ortiz finished his swing
by fred g on Oct 10, 2009 12:48 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Ortiz needs to take a more direct approach to the ball, not this long, loopy swing.

Check that, Theo better get busy no matter what.

Remember folks
This is a 5-game series. Win 2 in Boston, and carry the momentum back to Anaheim, and we can be the fifth team in MLB to come back and win a DS from down 0-2.
Go Sox! Do some BP and get ready to rock the Angels!

Damn!
Let’s keep the faith: Remember Cleveland in 07, MFY 04, A’s 03…Let’s do it! Our offense can’t be worset than that!
"That was a lot of fun… You just keep pounding balls into the gap. The one thing you don’t want to do is hit a home run. That’s a rally-killer." Jeff Francoeur

not much different than rays series last year
this team really needs a major infusion of young slugging. I love Papi and Lowell, but the Sox need hitters who are more dangerous. They need a real sluger – somebody much better than Youk and Bay.
I understand that “Manny in his prime” is not something that happens that often, but the Sox haven’t had a real slugger come up through the system in well over a decade.

on the upside
Beckett pitched really well
Ellsbury had a nice game at the plate
Papelbon looked good
Lowell’s defense has been tight, AGon too
Martinez threw out a runner, and looked good behind the plate – some nice framing
