Can anyone explain what the heck was going on with Bobby Abreu's four walks yesterday? Lester threw only 4-seamers and cutters outside, with precious few exceptions. Look, the guy's a good hitter and spits on bad offerings, but what is the upside of putting him on this much ahead of Torii Hunter?
Here is the first at-bat against Lester:
And at-bat number 2:
Finally, at-bat number 3:
Strategy for one at-bat? Sure. All three? No. Abreu covers the inside of the plate well, but this is kind of ridiculous. Is this Lester's idea? Victor Martinez? Farrell? Varitek?
I thought Lester looked pretty strong last night except for the gopher ball to Hunter and a couple of misses here and there. Why fear Abreu this much? He's not the power threat he used to be, and giving him a 1.000 OBP rather than taking your chances pitching to him seems silly. On top of that, Lester has the platoon advantage. What's up with this? Anyone know?
