GameThread: ALDS Baseball - Oct. 7

Wipe the slate clean because today playoff baseball starts.

Scratch that. Playoff baseball started last night with this game. OK, so technically it wasn't postseason baseball, but it felt like it. And that's what really matters, right?

Here's the action we'll see today:

Game One:
Rockies @ Phillies - 2:37 p.m. EST
COL U. Jimenez v. PHI C. Lee

Game Two:
Twins @ Yankees - 6:07 p.m. EST
MIN ???  v. NYY C.C. Sabathia

Game Three:
Cardinals @ Dodgers - 9:37 p.m. EST
STL C. Carpenter v. LAD R. Wolf

Feel free to use this thread to discuss all three games on today's docket. If last night's game means anything for this postseason, we're in for one helluva ride.

Can someone explain to me the logic behind this scheduling?

Middle-of-the-day playoff baseball instead of, say, 5-8, 8-11, 2 games/day.

Cliff Lee just got the first hit for the Phillies.

I knew we shoud’ve traded for him. He would’ve solved rotation AND DH problems.

Back when DH was more of a problem.

Holy crap he just stole second!

We’d have solved our speed issues too!

2 horrendous calls

both favoring the home team. Just brutal…..

What were the calls?

Rockies player safe at third

Ump called him out – clearly safe, announcers admit
Then, Cliff Lee picked off second, ump calls him safe – replay shows bad call again

Heh

Ryan Howard thinks he’s some kind of Cliff Lee!

Alright. Who here thinks the Twins have any shot at all?

Any shot to win the series? At all? Ever?

absolutely zero chance.

It has nothing to do with being bad (they are), or being 0-7 against the Yankees (they were) or not having Slowey or Morneau (they don’t). It is that:
a)They are one of the worst hitting teams against LHP in the league. They managed 4 total baserunners against CC last time out. The will have to face 2 lefties out of 3 for the Yankees.
b)Their starting pitching sucks balls.
c)Their rotation is not even alligned-Duensing is going to start it off for them for C-sakes.

As much as I have dreams of Carl Pavano being the winning pitcher in the clinching game, is just ain’t gonna happen. The Tigers at least had a puncher’s chance-good front end, decent rotation order, and 4 guys who mash lefties (ordonez, Cabrera, Inge and Rayburn). Now, forget it.

by Buzzy on Oct 7, 2009 4:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Slight chance (5% maybe)

It’d be a huge upset if the MFY lost.

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

by Drugs Delaney on Oct 7, 2009 4:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Playoffs are a crapshoot.

I think the Yankees have as good a chance as any team has ever had—even of sweeping—so maybe 75-25, 80-20.

But even the Yankees lost a series to the Nats.

by Ben Buchanan on Oct 7, 2009 4:58 PM EDT up reply actions

er

I didn’t mean a literal 0% chance.

by Buzzy on Oct 7, 2009 9:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Phils are scary

I like their starting pitching, hitting, speed, power……the only question – and it’s a big one – is Brad Lidge.

Re: the Twins. – They have next-to-no chance…..but…..one can always hope for a miracle.

by ccthemovieman on Oct 7, 2009 4:33 PM EDT reply actions

Poor Cleveland

Those Indians fans must be sick watching these playoffs. First, you have Cliff Lee leading the Phils to a win right now. Next up is C.C. Sabathia probably winning with NY, then Mark De Rosa helping the Cards and then tomorrow Victor Martinez leading the Sox. It has to be painful.

Poor Delmon

failing to live up to expectations, being considered to be on the wrong end of one of the worst trades, his brother Dmitri’s career is probably over due to weight/diabetes struggles, and (I think) their mom died. I’m pulling for the guy, and not just cause he’s playing the MFY.

That, and cannon balls do bounce.

At what point depends on how far they get before gravity pulls the ball down.

by bdalebs on Oct 7, 2009 7:51 PM EDT up reply actions

There was still plenty of time to get Cano

If OC’s throw is on the plate—or even on the left side of the plate—Cano would have been out.
