GameThread: ALDS Baseball - Oct. 7
Wipe the slate clean because today playoff baseball starts.
Scratch that. Playoff baseball started last night with this game. OK, so technically it wasn't postseason baseball, but it felt like it. And that's what really matters, right?
Here's the action we'll see today:
Game One:
Rockies @ Phillies - 2:37 p.m. EST
COL U. Jimenez v. PHI C. LeeGame Two:
Twins @ Yankees - 6:07 p.m. EST
MIN ??? v. NYY C.C. SabathiaGame Three:
Cardinals @ Dodgers - 9:37 p.m. EST
STL C. Carpenter v. LAD R. Wolf
Feel free to use this thread to discuss all three games on today's docket. If last night's game means anything for this postseason, we're in for one helluva ride.

Can someone explain to me the logic behind this scheduling?
Middle-of-the-day playoff baseball instead of, say, 5-8, 8-11, 2 games/day.
Ubaldo is a baaad man!
"That was a lot of fun… You just keep pounding balls into the gap. The one thing you don’t want to do is hit a home run. That’s a rally-killer." Jeff Francoeur
Cliff Lee just got the first hit for the Phillies.
I knew we shoud’ve traded for him. He would’ve solved rotation AND DH problems.
Back when DH was more of a problem.
In Lee thou shall believe!

2 horrendous calls
both favoring the home team. Just brutal…..
What were the calls?
I’m following on Gameday at work.
I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

Rockies player safe at third
Ump called him out – clearly safe, announcers admit
Then, Cliff Lee picked off second, ump calls him safe – replay shows bad call again

Alright. Who here thinks the Twins have any shot at all?
Any shot to win the series? At all? Ever?

absolutely zero chance.
It has nothing to do with being bad (they are), or being 0-7 against the Yankees (they were) or not having Slowey or Morneau (they don’t). It is that:
a)They are one of the worst hitting teams against LHP in the league. They managed 4 total baserunners against CC last time out. The will have to face 2 lefties out of 3 for the Yankees.
b)Their starting pitching sucks balls.
c)Their rotation is not even alligned-Duensing is going to start it off for them for C-sakes.
As much as I have dreams of Carl Pavano being the winning pitcher in the clinching game, is just ain’t gonna happen. The Tigers at least had a puncher’s chance-good front end, decent rotation order, and 4 guys who mash lefties (ordonez, Cabrera, Inge and Rayburn). Now, forget it.
Slight chance (5% maybe)
It’d be a huge upset if the MFY lost.
I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

Playoffs are a crapshoot.
I think the Yankees have as good a chance as any team has ever had—even of sweeping—so maybe 75-25, 80-20.
But even the Yankees lost a series to the Nats.
Phils are scary
I like their starting pitching, hitting, speed, power……the only question – and it’s a big one – is Brad Lidge.
Re: the Twins. – They have next-to-no chance…..but…..one can always hope for a miracle.
Poor Cleveland
Those Indians fans must be sick watching these playoffs. First, you have Cliff Lee leading the Phils to a win right now. Next up is C.C. Sabathia probably winning with NY, then Mark De Rosa helping the Cards and then tomorrow Victor Martinez leading the Sox. It has to be painful.
Craig Sager dressing classy as usual.
Though a bit more conservative for tonight.
Hey, at least he doesn't give a crap about what other people think.
Admirable.

TBS announcing is such a joke.
“The Twins played the Yankees close in 6 of those 7 games. In fact, 3 of them were walk-offs.”
“Yeah, a couple of them happened here…”
"Teixiera hasn't skipped a beat since coming over from the Angels!!"
Well…except the first month and a half of the season, dumbasses.
Goddamn that DeMarlo Hale.
Doesn't he always, though?
So wouldn’t that count as not skipping a beat? It’s a shitty beat, but part of the same ol’ song.
Dudes. OMG.
I just found out I can get the playoffs on MLB.TV.
It’s on like @#$%ing Donkey Kong.
Goddamn that DeMarlo Hale.
Not reading the SBN front page?
It was on their last night.

Is he not a first-pitch swinger?
Is it not time to start throwing your first pitch to Derek Jeter about eyebrow-high?
Goddamn that DeMarlo Hale.
A-Rod fails to drive in a runner from second
God, I love the postseason!

He didn't play through an injury that hampers most daily activities...
Wasn’t forced to avoid the logical treatment for said injury, wasn’t immediately DL’d because of a small pain, and got more AB’s.
Health =/= skill.

but don’t expect repetition to sway everyone

Then why does the opposition continue to repeat the same stuff?

someone has to step up & take the high road but sure about the use of “opposition” however

If I’m reading that right, you expect me to find more things to say? How am I supposed to do that when it’s a basic concept that we’re splitting on? There’s not a lot that can be said.

Poor Delmon
failing to live up to expectations, being considered to be on the wrong end of one of the worst trades, his brother Dmitri’s career is probably over due to weight/diabetes struggles, and (I think) their mom died. I’m pulling for the guy, and not just cause he’s playing the MFY.

I know. I should have said that he sucked on that play.

That, and cannon balls do bounce.
At what point depends on how far they get before gravity pulls the ball down.
@bs_uf15bosox9be The Original Gameday; Learn to use SB Nation
There was still plenty of time to get Cano
If OC’s throw is on the plate—or even on the left side of the plate—Cano would have been out.

Oddly, checking the data (should've done it before posting, but whatever):

How many bounces would it take for Damon to get it there?
3 maybe 4?
"It would have been a nice idea if you could run through the postseason without losing. I don't think it's realistic."

You are assuming a couple of things
First, Damon knew how many outs there were. And, he didn’t fall down trying to get to the ball.

Ok, if either makes a good throw then they have him
"It would have been a nice idea if you could run through the postseason without losing. I don't think it's realistic."

No
OC had time—even with Young’s bad throw. OC was the one throwing to the plate. If he made a good throw, the run doesn’t score.

Yes, but if young makes a good throw, that might make up for OC's bad throw.

Not so sure
If youing made a better throw and OC still threw the ball up the first base line, Cano is probably safe.

If he makes a good throw, perhaps the right field bleachers cave in.
