Around SBN: Raiders' GM Begins The Purge

Hoyer in SD: Help or Hindrance

As it appears almost certain that Hoyer will become the new GM of the Padres, I began to wonder what effect that will have on a potential trade for Adrian Gonzalez

Help:

  • Familiarity with Boston front office
  • Ease of communication
  • May feel he owes something to Theo and Boston
  • Carryover of rose colored view of Boston prospects
  • Does not share same personal connection to Gonzalez

Hurt

  • Fans may complain that any deal is done a favor (may have to get more from Boston than other teams to overcompensate)
  • Is aware of all the flaws of Boston players and prospects
  • Gonzalez's strengths are valued equally by Hoyer

Boston sports has recently been on both sides of the familiarity of GMs. The KG trade is obviously a product of Ainge and McHale's friendship as the Celtics was not the best offer on the table. On the other hand, the Patriots trade of Matt Cassell to KC was below market and done quicker than necessary. So despite what they may say, friendships and favors do exist in sport front offices.
So what do you think? Is Hoyer being hired by San Diego a good thing or not?

Poll
Is Hoyer working for the Padres a good thing?
Yes, the friendship will allow us to get Gonzalez easier.

No, Hoyer will require a higher price in order to save face.

The good and bad will balance each other out, making us neutral.

"outweigh each other"?

Also, can we get an option for “would rather not trade loads of players for one”?

wow i had not thought of that

very interesting. i’ll go with it helps, but no deal will probably get done. we have a good enough offense for next year if we resign bay and maybe get a decent SS. i think the lack of road offense this year was kind of a freak thing. just wait a year or two for the prospects to get here and we’ll be glad we didn’t dump them all for gonzo.

Yea this wasn't necessarily an endorsement of the deal

I’m definitely more of a wait out next year and go with prospects. This was more of a academic discussion.

yeah i actually feel really good about the offense

the acquisition of v-mart was big, and papi being functional for april and may plus ellsbury continuing to improve should have us in business. like i said above though, this hinges on resigning bay and getting production at SS (jedi I hope)

I don't think it matters much

Any Padres GM will want a lot in return for the team’s best player.

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

It hurts.

A new GM will not trade his star player, is my bet. You have to win immediately to offset that (see: McDaniels with the Broncos). I think Gonzalez is off the block, no matter how dumb a move that may be given their incredibly questionable ability to resign him.

I think it doesn't help

But that’s not because Hoyer is from Boston, it’s because his comments (and Moorad’s) make it sound like they feel they can get enough together to compete soon- take away Gonzalez and that chance is gone for a few years until prospects hopefully develop. Plus, while their payroll is small, he has about $10 Million to play with to get next year up to 2008’s payroll and I’m pretty sure Moorad said he intends to gradually increase payroll.
I don’t think the owner is ready to go into complete rebuild mode, and no matter what the GM wants, he’s the boss. Plus, you better believe that he’ll be watching any deal Hoyer talks about with Theo like a hawk.
