That time of year: Playoff Roster
So with the season nearly over, Tito's mind turns to October (even though it is all ready October!).
Here's a layout for what the playoff roster may look like:
C:V-Mart, Jason Varitek
1B: Kevin Youkilis
2B: Dustin Pedroia
SS: Alex Gonzalez
3B: Mike Lowell
UTIF: options=Chris Woodward, Nick Green, Jed Lowrie, Casey Kotchman
LF: Jason Bay
CF: Jacoby Ellsbury
RF: JD Drew
UTOFs: options=Rocco Baldelli, Joey Gathright, Josh Reddick
DH: David Ortiz
SP:Jon Lester
SP: Josh Beckett
SP: Clay Buchholz
RP: Takashi Saito
RP: Hideki Okajima
RP: Billy Wagner
RP: Daniel Bard
RP: Ramon Ramirez
RP: options=Tim Wakefield, Paul Byrd, Manny Delcarmen, Michael Bowden
So Tito has some choices to make. If I could accurately guess, I would say that he'd choose Kotchman and Lowrie for UTIF, both Rocco and Gathright for UTOF, and for the last pitching spot, I think it's a tossup between Manny Delcarmen and Tim Wakefield-Byrd hasn't been really good at all in more than one of his starts. However, personally for me I take Wakefield for two reasons, his early success and some fall success and loyalty to the organization.
Thoughts?

Wake's probably done - not healthy enough.

Are you admitting that you lose the bet, then?

We never said ANYTHING about the postseason.
That bet had so many loopholes, it’s not even funny.

Wake will eat up innings if he’s healthy, he’ll save some pitching.

i pretty much agree with you
woodward and green have no business being on the roster, while Kotchman is a lock. He’s this years mientkiewicz. baldelli might be hurt, in which case reddick would take his place, but gathright is another lock because of his speed. i would love to have wake as the long man, because the knuckler can be a weapon. but byrd is clearly healthier and he actually hasnt been that bad for us. forget delcarmen.

Maybe sub Reddick for Baldelli
That injury is looking like a problem.

Baldelli’s good, but fortunately he’s not series changing. It’s not like he’s had big moments in the World Series before ;).

Well I agree with all but one there. Unless Baldelli is too injured (which I’m sure you’re assuming he is healthy). Gotta have Gathright to have speed off the bench. I tend to think they may lean towards Byrd instead of Delcarmen in case of an emergency long relief situation.

Byrd over Delcarmen
It appears that Byrd is getting the call over MDC. I think it’s the right decision, not because he’s the better fit but because of Delcarmen’s fender bender and recent struggles. I don’t understand the need for a long man in a 5 game series with 3 day break and a 7 man pen. I would let MDC get healthy and straightened out this week then swap he and Byrd should they advance to the ALCS.
