Is Rev Halofan for real?

While I may be a passionate Yankee fan (from Amherst, no less), I spend a fair amount of my time perusing Boston sports media such as your blog here, Dirt Dogs, WEEI, etc.  And even though I don't always agree with what Red Sox fans have to say, your opinions are generally pretty level-headed and based in some semblance of fact.

As you probably know all too well, my Yanks are gearing up for their ALCS match-up with the Angels this Friday.  In order to better prepare, I decided to take the next step and become a member of Halos Heaven, the LAA Sports Blog Nation affiliate.  Now, I'm more often than not pretty impressed with the coverage SB provides for each team, but... what's the deal with Rev Halofan (the head blogger at Halos Heaven)?

The guy seems a little off his rocker when it comes to following his team.  Does he ever provide objective analysis or will he continue to refer to CC Sabathia as that "fat guy" from New York that doesn't even belong on the same field as "the great John Lackey?"  Most SB head bloggers maintain some sort of professionalism when putting together posts, but this guy doesn't seem like he belongs in the same league as any of the guys from our site, or Atheltics nation, or your very own Randy Booth.

So please, can anyone tell what this guy's deal is?

That's pretty mellow for Rev actually.

Most of his posts wouldn’t be allowed on HBO.

Uh, hi--Have you ever heard of a little thing called sarcasm? Facetious hyperbole?

If you really think Rev was being serious when he referred to “that fat guy” and “the great John Lackey,” go loosen up a bit and come back later. Or, try reading ESPN headlines for a while and then come back to HH and think whether it’s really that off base in its tone. He’s just engaging in the same type of exaggeration certain other media outlets do—it’s just that he’s exaggerating for the benefit of a different side. Yes he can overdo it sometimes, but come on, really? Really? You’re offended? You NY types are far more ultra-sensitive than we thought!

Also, way to bag on the guy on a totally different site as opposed to, you know, bringing it up to his face. You might find he’s a decent guy.

Well

Perhaps it’s unfair to paint RSN as a whole with that broad brush—and having read a fair amount of OTM, I’d say that it is unfair—but as I’m sure you all can appreciate, being trounced by one team many, many, many, many times, combined with what we perceive as overt arrogance and self-entitledness on the part of a great number of that team’s fans, does give rise to a certain amount of despising of that team. Then things like trotting Dave Henderson out to smugly repeat his little batting twirl and basically say “Hi, remember me, the guy who crushed your franchise’s soul?” kind of adds to that effect.

The Dave Henderson thing should not be a surprise.

That’s pretty common practice among every team in the postseason. The Indians brought out Beckett’s ex, for Chrissake.

But I absolutely hate hate HATE the fact that this fanbase is constantly painted in such a negative light as annoying bandwagoners and the like. Having spent all my formative years in Massachusetts, I can very comfortably say that we have had one of the most pervasive fanbases in the league even while we were entrenched in our 80 years of shit. Red Sox support was no noticeably larger during the mid 90s when we were winning than when we were losing quite badly in the early 90s. And while certainly the fanbase has grown some since the world series win, it would be quite difficult to make a significant difference in saturation simply because of how much of a baseball town Boston already was.

If there’s any legitimacy to the prejudice it’s from people who throw on the cap in another state after 2004, but whenever anyone talks about the awful Sox fans they talk about “trashy Boston” and the like instead of calling out your own neighbors for jumping on the bandwagon.

Sure, we’ve got bad fans, but so does every team, and the fact is that seeing so many of you guys on Halos Heaven act like assholes so consistently whenever I go there (admittedly, only during Boston-LA series) it’s ironic that you’d call the Sox fans bad.

by USG on Oct 14, 2009 3:33 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Oh I'm not denying what you're saying

And I’m sure we’d have a better appreciation for your entrenched fanbase were we on, say, the east coast. My brother, for example, has now lived either in MA or NC for most of his life (still a solid Angels fan, though), and that sort of osmosis has softened my own view of you guys. I toured Fenway a few years back and was struck by the geunineness of the awe and reverence in which the guide and a bunch of people around the area held the team.

It’s just that, you understand, those of us in CA are exposed only to those bandwagoners from OC and LA who jumped on the Soxwagon when it was trendy and fashionable to do so, or those MA transplants who, frankly, do to some extent act like genuine Massholes out here. So that’s where the majority of our perception of your fanbase comes from.

Other things that have annoyed me include that when Joe Saunders pitched in Fenway for the first time, his mother came down to watch her son pitch—and a sizable crowd in Fenway started viciously heckling her. I mean, I understand such things go with the territory in an opposing stadium, but really? The guy’s 60 year old mother? Really?

Bandwagon Fans

One theory I’ve had about all of these bandwagon fans is that they come from our colleges and universities. Kids come to Boston (or anywhere in NE) to attend one of the hundreds of schools around here and they leave “Boston Fans”, having been won over as fans in 4 years. This produces some real fans, but mostly just people who like to where the hats.

My other theory is that people often times started as real fans growing up in the area, then leave and do not keep up with the team. If you live in the area, The Sox are such a part of the culture that you have to put in almost no effort to follow the team. everyone talks about the Sox so much, and they are on the TV’s in bars all the time, that its easy to know everything about the team while barely putting in the effort. Once you leave the area it takes more work. So these people slowly lose their knowledge as the years go by away from the area, but still wear the hat, and for sure still remember how to be Massholes.

Was I supposed to post this on Halos Heaven?

- I know that LA and Boston have some history, so I thought I would go here first.

- I’m not offended—I find it mildly amusing until I leave your site shortly thereafter. I was just commenting that Rev appears more like your run-of-the-mill troll on most SB sites rather than a head blogger.

Hmm

You can call this behavior “sarcasm” or “hyperbole” if you like, but really it is more than that. And it is not just directed at Sox fans or those here. We have discussed this before, and each time members of HH come over and try to defend it or claim that in reality HH is filled with level-headed baseball discussion. Well, I read HH and it is generally not filled with level headed baseball discussion. Especially when compared to the other SBN sites. That is just a fact. Each has its own personality, and HH is by far the most extreme, angriest and least reality-based site I have come across on this network. That is not to say that there is not level-headed discussion there, or that many posters there do not know a lot about baseball, but the percentage of anger, rant and conspiracy theory there is high, as is a relatively high percentage of overall baseball ignorance. I did post there recently, after the non-strike calls on Nick Green during the regular season. While not called a troll, I did have several members of the site doubting the Brooks K-zone data. One called the data “doctored.” That kind of thing is ridiculous. Rev went around to other sites (like BtB) and claimed that this was a conspiracy of MLB bias against the Angels. The goal of the conspiracy was to make sure the Yankees and Sox met in the ALCS. That was not sarcasm, it was clearly his belief. And in light of what we have seen from the umpires this post season, it is shear nonsense.

That said, I have nothing really against Rev or HH. He is a diehard fan of his team and I can respect that. Maybe if I met him in the real world I would also find him a riot. But let’s not paint him or HH in an unrealistic light.

by Buzzy on Oct 14, 2009 10:02 AM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

So you're reading choice postgame threads and concluding the entire site is like that?

Something tells me you’ve never read any of the sidebar discussions or basically any story that’s not authored by rev….yes rev can be a bit extreme, but if you’re taking those few threads that you’ve read and broadbrushing us all as that extreme, then you’re clearly not paying enough attention.

You’d most certainly have a different opinion if the only place you stuck your opinion in wasn’t in the threads discussing one of the most controversial calls this season!

RIP Nick Adenhart.

No

you are wrong. I read much more of the site than you give me credit for. I have done so for several years. Just because I only posted once does not mean that I have only visited a few times. I like WiHalo’s cartoons, I like the insights of several posters, and overall read many things posted on the SBN sites, especially of AL clubs.

You are just not objective because you are talking about your site. It is like me thinking my 2 year old daughter is a genius (she is). If you polled other SBNers as to which MLB SBN site has the most obnoxious crap on it, HH will win, hands down.

And this quote “…discussing one of the most controversial calls this season!”
proves my point about the lack of objectivity. Just ask a Twins, Tigers or Rockies fan if this was one of the most controversial calls this season. It was a bad call in a meaningless regular season game. As I have said before, the fans of those teams got jobbed in calls that were arguably worse given the context of what the umps were calling throughout the Sox-Angels game, arguably worse in the context of the actual call (eg Cuzzi’s blindness on a ball in play that he has a clear view of and is 20 feet away from) and clearly worse given the context of the importance. But they complain far, far less. There is baseball outside of the OC.

by Buzzy on Oct 14, 2009 1:43 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Uh, actually,

Given the amount of coverage it got not only in LA and Boston but in the wider sports market I’d say it was, in fact, one of the more, if not one of the most, controversial calls this season.

I’ll give you credit for reading more. And I’m not saying we’re the best out there, because we’re not. No one fanbase is. But it’s incredibly unfair to look at Rev and look at our reaction to a controversial play and say that ergo that’s our entire attitude. It’s no better than those of us who paint Boston as a bunch of arrogant bandwagoning Massholes—yes there are those of you who are like that, but it’s certainly not your entire base.

Look

I never said the Angels fanbase was composed of fans that were like Rev. That would be crazy. Nor do I think that HH itself is representative of the average Angels fan. You may disagree. I don’t even think that HH is a homogeneous group that are all angry, biased and paranoid. My experience from the, say, 30+ or so times a season that I do visit and read, is that, on average, the membership is better described by those words than any other SBN group that I visit. This experience is also colored by the group of posters that come over to this site uninvited and rant. You will see below CassanovaWong. CW is a Yankees fan filled with healthy Sox hate. But when he comes to this site, he posts interesting things and is basically civil. The same more or less goes the other way. The only group of fans that consistently come to this site and behave badly are from HH. Now, I will admit that this is not all of HH, and that my experence reading HH is not nearly as extensive as that of Angel fans that live there, but that is what I have seen. Again, this is different than saying all of HH is like Rev, or that everyone on HH is an angry nut.

I'm an Angels fan who spends some time over at Halos Heaven

The community over at HH is great and there are a number of people (WiHaloFan, mattwelch, etc. who put up some interesting things.

Rev…what can I say? He’s not objective about anything, he’s irreverant, rude, and unnecessarily harsh. He’s argumentative about everything, especially when it comes to other teams’ fans’ opinions. He gripes constantly about East Coast Bias, ESPN coverage, and any other perceived slight against the Angels (even when the criticism is warranted). It’s not pretty.

Suffice to say, I stick around for the community of Angels fans, most of whom are pretty reasonable and knowledgeable, not the “esteemed” Rev Halofan.

My best advice? Ignore him as much as possible.

I can confirm that Rev Halo is an actual person

He does local talk radio in Los Angeles. He is a crazy, mid-life crisis, Rick Bayless looking freak show who has found some small level of celebrity with other Angel fans.

His rise to Halo Heaven power is mostly bc nobody in LA cares about the Angels and so he has a forum to talk to the other pissed off and frustrated Angel fans who feel that their team should be considered one of the great franchises in all of sport.

To listen to Rev Halo on the radio is like listening to a 16 year old girl talk about the captain of the football team…its pathetic, extremely confusing and hilarious.

What I would like to know is what will Rev do now that the Red Sox do not define his existence?

Is it just me.....

Or could you substitute “Bill Simmons” for Rev Halofan, and “Red Sox” for Angels in almost all of these comments and they would make perfect sense?

I am just saying, homerism is homerism. Being a “respected” journalist doesn’t make the homerism go away.

by pslakerfan on Oct 14, 2009 11:21 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

this is a good point

Being a respected journalist in 2009 means getting three emails from dudes on the other side of the country saying that they came to the same conclusions as you and therefore you are “okay” in their minds.

Being a homer means you get to cheer when your team wins no matter what the numbers said they would do.

Why is the choice so hard?

by Rev Halofan on Oct 15, 2009 12:29 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

This is a bad point.

Bill Simmons manages to cheer for the Boston teams without insulting the players, fans, and franchise in general of the other team in ways that, as I said, would not be allowed on HBO.

by USG on Oct 15, 2009 11:01 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

First of all.....

I didn’t say that Bill Simmons and Rev Halofan used the same language or tactics when “homering” for their respective teams. I implied that being a “respected” journalist doesn’t make you any less of a homer. That’s all.

I won’t go so far as to say that BS insults players or fans or franchises, but he certainly comes close. He disrespects Kobe Bryant, the Lakers, and the city of LA in general on a daily basis. Disrespecting does not equal insulting necessarily, but it is certainly in the same ballpark.

As a supposedly “respected” journalist (which outside of Boston is debatable), he should be better than that.

It really isn't hard to understand.

Rev is the guy who puts on his team colors even when they don’t match his shoes or his glasses. He’s the guy who takes his Missus out for a ballgame to root for his team when other fans take the night off. He’s the guy who drives 40 miles a night from East LA to sit in his season seats stuck way out in the bleachers, when Mr. Corporate Exec handed away duckets behind the home dugout to an uncaring business client who couldn’t be bothered to drive 10 miles up the road from their upscale beachfront property.

Rev is the guy who does not need a Jumbotron to tell him when to make N-O-I-S-E- And he is the guy who can name every player from the team’s history that gets shown on that Jumbotron during trivia challenges. He is the guy who still feels the distant pain of past team failures and knows what it means to enjoy every second of current success. Because Rev is the guy who knows it has not been there forever, and may all be gone tomorrow.

Rev will be there on game 162 when the season ended back on game 146, because he knows that come day 163 there will be no baseball at all.

Rev is the guy who doesn’t need to be educated on his team’s past, nor introduced to his team’s present, and is prepared to discuss his team’s future without hesitation. Rev knows his statistics, but he also know their limits. He is intelligent enough to recognize that numbers do not have gravitas merely because they are numerous. And he is sufficiently articulate when pointing this out.

So, to begin, Rev is a fan. Probably more so than most people who visit SBNation forums. And this difference can be clear. And unexpected. And off-putting.

But, Rev is not milquetoast. Nor is he for milquetoasts. He is more Richard Pryor than Erma Bombeck, Jack Kerouac than Emily Post, Hunter S. Thompson than Walter L. Cronkite. To me, Rev is Bill The Cat from Bloom County. Never too far removed from a random ACK! He is not for everyone. The faint of heart, the thin of skin, the weak of knees should all heed my advice and sit elsewhere. Pick another bleacher. Find a quieter spot. If you did not know this before you settled in and got comfortable, apologies all around. But now you do know.

Does it work? Yes, it does. 3000 posts in game threads are testimony that it works. And it works for newbies and works for sabremetricians and works for crusty old guys and career professionals and fellow baseball fans from around the globe. And that is hard work, that Rev does.

But it doesn’t work for everybody. If you are not a fan of the Angels, then you are not of Rev’s tribe. It is what being a sports fan has always been about. Rev’s internet antics have nothing on beer-laden NY Jets fans urinating on the coat backs of visiting Boston Patriots fans when everybody was huddled together, crammed tight, in 14 degree weather at Shea Stadium. (Ah, the good old days!)

Actually, it doesn’t even work for all Angels fans. Rev is an acquired taste. A bipolar drink. Champagne on most nights, soda water filtered through smelly socks the next. And Rev’s response was that “it is getting really gay.” For fuck’s sake, Rev must be more of an ignoramus than I thought. Either that or he’s in 7th grade.

My point being that this is the umpteenth time that Gorby

has been on Rev’s case, and HH remains fair game for that. This, in response to Bloggy’s conjecture.

Now, if you want to take Rev to task for his choice of response, I am not going to stand in your way. But, be advised, if this is your measure of why Rev is a horrid blog-master, know that by this measure he remains a mere piker on SBNation. Not to excuse him, but he ain’t close to being the worst, which appears to be the thrust of this thread. For particularly low level of hell, see Lookout Landing.

And MY only point is that a Yankees fan asking what Rev's deal was...

…wouldn’t likely be met with a “good question, my chap!!”

Gorby is an Angels fan.

Yankee guy (whatever the @#%$ his name is) knows that Angels fan have a beef with Sox fans because up until this year, we tend to powerbomb you through the bingo table in the playoffs. So the folks around here would have an idea of what Rev was all about. So he asked.

There’s no problem with that. I don’t think he’d want to sit through 125 “Rev is the best of times, Rev is the worst of times” comments like the one above.

What are you talking about?

East LA is a geographic area and no comment was made about race whatsoever, so save it. And I, myself, am not from Boston.

If anything, you’re assuming that someone from Boston is automatically making a racist comment is more racist than mentioning East LA might make someone crusty.

OK, you tell me what his statement meant.

“Also, Rev lives in East LA? Combine that fact”

Combine what? What else would his location have to do with anything.

That he may live in a bad neighborhood? That doesn’t make any sense.
That he is about 30 minutes from the beach?

You tell me what he was implying. I think race is a viable theory, but tell me a better one.

I am not originally from Boston

I’m from Saint Louis, Missouri. So don’t give me that crap about racism, my city has been simultaneously one of the most diverse and most crime-ridden cities in America.

East L.A. is horrible for a myriad of reasons, its generally rundown, there’s tons of crime, unemployment is ridiculously high, generally houses of poor quality, etc.

Hey, I love L.A., Santa Monica and West LA are two of my favorite places in the country, but as for East LA, I’d rather live just about anywhere else.

User-editable post.

Dunno if SBN has something like that available, so it might just have to be a Wikipedia page. I want to have one with every [at least semi-]regular user listed, so that people can use it as a reference if they don’t recognize someone or are new to the site. Would also be a good way to catch up on our dumb jokes.

Just kidding. It’s probably a good I (and fun) little idea.

Something I’ve thought for awhile is a little Glossary of Stats on the site that folks can link over to if, like me, they’re really not up on all the sabermetrics. Might help those who feel intimidated by the big numbers to understand a bit better.
