Josh Beckett made it clear on Monday that he would like to see Jason Varitek back in a Red Sox uniform in 2010.
"He’s definitely one of those guys I’d love to see back, even if the transition starts like it started at the end of the year," Beckett said. "I think there’s a lot of things that a lot of people can learn from him. And him being around, it’s never a bad thing. He’s so great with young guys and he knows to run a clubhouse and that’s why he wears that ‘C’ on his chest."

I've got no problem with Tek as a $3M backup.

I do
We have a cheaper backup in the minors who can at least throw out runners.

Who?

Bingo
He routinely throws out over 40% of base stealers. Plus, who knows, maybe he’ll bring the bat he’s flashed on occasion with him. Stranger things have happened.

You'd say he's major league ready, then?

I'd say his arm is.
The question is do we expect him to ever fully develop his bat into what it had been at various points in the minors. If yes, than we should leave him down there and make sure he has the maximum possible number of ABs. If no, then we shouldn’t worry about calling him up to be a backup with a live arm.

But we really don't have a choice.
It’s Tek’s option.

Tek
I feel like he won’t get $3M+ on the open market. However, I could see a team signing him to be a leader for a pitching staff or to mentor a young catcher. Giants, perhaps? Orioles? He could make his money there.

Probably not the year after he retires, though

yeah...
If I were him I’d take like 10 years off the game to spend with my family after being on the road all the time for 15+ years.

Josh- Shut UP!
Maybe, before you go dictating terms, you could win a playoff game again at some point. That would be great Josh, thanks.
