Papelbon's gotta go
we need to get rid of him during the offseason. He still should have value on the trade market and let's face it, he got lucky ALOT during the regular season. His control of his fastball isn't there and he lacks a secondary pitch to get hitters out. He royally fucked up the game today and when you add his big mouth into the equation I don't know how can we keep this guy.

Not so fast
I’m not ready to give up on Paplebon just yet but Bard’s got closer stuff. Also it’s 1 bad game. I know he had a down year but he’s still an elite closer

Now now, Melkman. But seriously?
Many superstar baseball players have had a lackluster season one time or another. You’re gonna get rid of him just because of that?

harsh words
i let my initial reactions from the game cause me to think irrationally. But you have to admit that the ENTIRE year papelbon had games where men on constantly on base… you could see something like this eventually happening
Most on this site saw Papelbon doing a Houdini act all year
…and felt he wasn’t all that great. So, yes, I definitely saw something like this eventually happening. I was not full of confidence when he jogged in from the bullpen.
And, I’d like to say that I respect someone who can take back what he says and admit it was said hastily. Kudos.
Goddamn that DeMarlo Hale.
Papelbon is still solid.
Nathan (who I feel is better than Papelbon) blew a save this past week, Rivera has blown bigger saves. This series did not end today because of Papelbon, it ended today because our offense sucked in games 1 and 2.
VARITEK MUST GO
Brandon Webb in 2010
Its one blown save.
Don’t act like part of the reason we made it this far wasn’t because of Paps. He is a premier closer, they don’t grow on trees. We didn’t lose because of Papelbon, we lost because the Angels were the superior team. Move on, and look forward to next year – this team is going to be good.
Halves
He was winning the lottery lucky for the first half of the season. In the second half though I felt like the old paps was back and was pitching the way we all remember him. Our closer situation is way better than most teams, we could be throwing Lidge out in the 9th. We don’t have anyone on the team right now that could be the closer next year (assuming Wagner is out). MDC and RamRam are too wild, Bard is too young, Saito is probably getting too old (though quietly had a very solid year) and Oki doesn’t really have ‘closer stuff’.’ He lost a game, it happens even in important games. Why don’t you suggest we cut all the players who failed to provide us with offense in games one and two? How about that?

Are you kidding???
Are you going to get rid of Youk as well??? Get a clue…
Paps had a pretty good 2009 season..
He had a 1.15 WHIP, he had a 1.85 ERA, a .213 opponent batting average and .285 OBP for 2009.
Paps lost game 3 of the 2009 ALDS, but the Sox lost the series.
Paps still has some stats that are pretty incredible for the time in the league. I wouldn’t move him unless he is a clubhouse problem.
I guess I am more comfortable with the known problems of Papelbon than going on the market and looking for a closer, which I see more Eric Gagne’s types than Papelbon replacements. Even the great Mariano has blown crucial saves, including one that gave the MFY their worst humiliation they ever had in their history in 2004 ALCS.
