Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

David Ortiz, say hello to bull-riding champion Chris Shivers.

When John Henry and his partners with New England Sports Ventures acquired the Boston Red Sox in 2002, they wanted to create a cutting-edge sports company with diverse assets that stretched far beyond the cozy confines of Fenway Park. So they created the marketing entity Fenway Sports Group, which has represented the Red Sox and in 2007 acquired a 50% interest in Nascar's Roush Racing, plus the minor-league Salem Avalanche baseball team. Now FSG is taking diversity one step further.

On Friday, the group plans to announce a marketing partnership with the world's top bull-riding circuit, the Professional Bull Riders. The deal, which gives FSG a percentage of new sponsorship pacts, makes FSG the exclusive sales representative for the Colorado-based PBR, whose main circuit, the 34-event Built Ford Tough Series, now offers $11 million in prize money. PBR's 1,200 riders also can compete in more than 250 other events on three lower-tier circuits PBR controls.

Is John Henry a red neck?

Are they going to have rodeo’s at Fenway? Lawrence Lucchino sell your soul to make a buck I hate that rodeo stuff this is Boston not Dallas. What’s next red sox cowboy hats with a B on it or 2 with the dumb sox then what Toby Keith concerts we might as well have George W Bush throw out the first pitch.d4c2bb5c60c35846.jpeg

What's wrong with having Bush throw out the first pitch?

Besides that he wouldn’t be prez anymore.
Or that we aren’t the Washington, DC team (or recovering from a terrorist attack – MFY 01 WS).
Or that he’d get booed like mad in a uber-liberal area.

Other than that, he’d be perfect!

Was that a rhetorical question?

Oh, of course it was. :-)

I wanted to let this one pass, but I can't stop myself from wondering

You do realize that he’d get booed pretty much everywhere he goes, right? It doesn’t have to be a liberal area. Just asking…

Mother---- him and John Wayne!

Yeah.

People seem to fail to understand that 90% of what happened in his term wasn’t under his control.

End the political discussion, please.

Will do.

Like I said, anybody wants to discuss, feel free to email me. I’m interested in a career in politics, so the opinions of others, even those of people who have views of the almost exact opposite of mine, are extremely important to my understanding of what people want out of their government.

Not having political discussion

Just wanted to ask a question unrelated to political affiliation.

Yes, end of the political discussion.

Any news on who's in the running for the For Sale portion of the Sox?

We should take up a collection.

Hmm... maybe I missed it.

Oh well, it’s a stupid partnership either way.

For those children who claimed they’ve been a fan of their favorite team all their life, or even since they were about four or five years old: bullshit. The number.

Read the article, it’s great.

No, I understand that Rocco now has Nomar’s number, but it’s not like he’s played in it or anything.

by Randy Booth on Jan 10, 2009 10:34 PM EST up reply actions

It's just the acknowledgement that Nomar's not the Sox' star player anymore.

Like I said in the comment on the story, when Wake retires and someone else gets #49, it will bring me back to my first few times rooting for him and the Sox. The article shows how baseball can mean so much to fans when they start young. If more people told stories like this to kids, and introduced them to the game, and the players and history, then baseball wouldn’t have anywhere near the issues with the decline in the number of fans it’s facing today.

No one's worn 5 until now for a reason.

Or 21, but I have a feeling that they’re waiting for Lars to erase our memories of the previous holder of that number.

"No one's worn 5 until now for a reason."

They didn’t feel like it? Garciaparra was unbelievable, truly something else. But his historic importance to this franchise is somehow overrated looking back. The Red Sox were only a great team again when #45 arrived.

One player can't make a team, I guess.

It was just one of those numbers that was unofficially retired – kinda like Pesky’s 6, until it was officially retired.

I mean, I'm not putting the blame on Nomar

But both his team and Vaughn’s team weren’t that good, period. The Sox only started to be good again when Pedro arrived.

If no one has taken the player's place in a uniform, then it seems like they haven't left.

It’s a sentimental value thing.

Bullshit

At least I feel this way. It’s just a number, really. If you split Jason Bay and Jacoby Ellsbury you have Pedro’s number.

You'd also have a really weird player.

Kinda fast, kinda powerful, pretty good defender, below average arm, Canadian-American Indian.

I’m gonna say you don’t wear jerseys or player shirts, do you?

Actually, dead wrong

I have a vintage Larry Bird jersey, a Phil Kessel jersey and tons of Red Sox stuff, among them a Dice-K jersey I bought just as I got here in Argentina. Numbers don’t mean shit, it’s the player.

Mother---- him and John Wayne!

by MerryGoByeBye on Jan 11, 2009 5:28 PM EST up reply actions

The Dice-K jersey could have been a Damon jersey.

Is it a home jersey, and is it authentic or realistic looking? That’s why the number means so much then. If that guy wears a #5 jersey from now on, it will be a Rocco jersey, not a Nomar jersey.

So it doesn't have a name on it.

Who’s to say it wasn’t made back when Damon wore #18?

Depends who you are more attached to.

If you see the number 15, you either think DP or Millar – or someone else.

Have a look at this.

by britsoxfan on Jan 11, 2009 7:38 AM EST up reply actions

Also,

you can’t really believe that baseball is less popular than football because we fail to sit around in our armchairs and swap anecdotes about the way things used to be. Baseball is more navel-gazing and in tune with its past than any other sport of which I can think. That’s utterly central to its charm and appeal for so many of us.

And besides, the average floating-voter fan doesn’t give a hoot for historical perspective. They want immediate thrills and contemporary characters they can relate to, or admire, or love to hate. And dunking. And hard tackles. And terrible stabs of music blaring out every five seconds.

I mean with kids who have the attention span of a spoon.

“Baseball’s boring!”

And I think those number’s probably include MFY fans who don’t know why a ball hit out of the park isn’t a HR if it’s on the wrong side of the big, yellow pole.
