Is anybody else not happy with the Red Sox signings?

OK, so if you are not as big of a fan as I am here they are

Brad Penny- RHP

Josh Bard- C

John Smoltz- RHP

Rocco Baldelli- 4th Outfileder

Mark Kotsay- 1st base/ Outfielder

So, ALL of these signings are of a low risk high reward being that they are 1 year deals and for very little money.  But what grinds my gears about this is that we already have players that can out perform these guys that have yet to be given a chance.  Out of these 5 signings 4 were hurt last year... and none of them had a good year.

What I was hoping to see is a chance to see our young guys and our AAA vets a chance at the back up role.

Chris Carter would be a great back up on first base he hit .300 in AAA last season with 24 diggers.  Mark Kotsay can not put up those numbers, Chris Carter is ready to be brought up!

Jeff Bailey hit .301 with 25 HRs last season in AAA and won the leagues player of the year.  We would be an excellent option as a back up first base man and outfilder.

John Thurston would be a great utility guy, last year in AAA he player LF, RF, CF, SS, and 2B.  He out performed everybody in spring training and hit .316 in AAA with 19 stolen bases.

For pitchers we know the great prospects we have. Justin Masterson, Clay Buchholz, Michael Bowden.  These guys are big league ready.  I think Masterson will get the set up role again.  But if Penny and Smoltz put up poor numbers and stay healthy the prospects still probably won't get a shot.

Brown and Kottaras put up good numbers in AAA last year and would be a great team to fill our catching gap but who know what will happen.

So with all that said hopefully the Red Sox can prove me wrong and show that they made the right moves.  If the players they sign fail they will simply go on to the ones that I mentioned and I believe they will do better.

Jeebus! SP & RP are looking pretty damned good.

I'm happy.

Kotsay gives us flexibility that Carter and Bailey don’t.

If Smoltz can pitch, he’ll be good. Even last year, when he got hurt, he had an ERA+ of 165. He hasn’t had an era over 4 since 1994, and hasn’t had a below average season since 1988.

Penny also has awesome upside. He’s 30 and he throws 97. If these two are healthy, this could be the best rotation we’ve ever had.

Manny ain't the only bad man.

by tommy.otm on Jan 9, 2009 9:18 AM EST reply actions

Agreed

Carter and Bailey are Quad-A guys. Both are defensive butchers, Carter is truly awful. Neither is really an OF, and Drew and Baldelli are fragile. The fact that Bailey hit well in Triple-A as a 29-year old isn’t very impressive to me. Carter appears to have a good bat, but is probably more of a DH. Kotsay plays all three OF positions and 1B well, and is a halfway decent hitter. In other words, Kotsay is a much better fit.

These signings take pressure off Masterson, Buchholz, and Bowden. Masterson stays in the pen, where he’ll likely have more success, and Buchholz and Bowden don’t have to carry the load. If either wins a job, that’s fine. All the Sox would be out is $5 million for either Penny or Smoltz. If Smoltz or Penny pan out, the Sox would have one of the better rotations in the AL—and both have post-season experience.

The Sox look pretty much set everywhere but catcher.

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

Great signings, all of them.

Agreed

I’d also rather have both Bailey and Carter playing every day at AAA to inflate their trade value. They’ll put up big numbers and some GM who thinks their big AAA numbers will translate to big MLB numbers if they only got regular ABs will offer something useful for them.

by RSNexile on Jan 9, 2009 4:44 PM EST up reply actions

Not much trade value,

for guys who cannot even make the Sox bench. These guys are not 20 year olds.

by BTLove on Jan 10, 2009 1:06 AM EST up reply actions

They don't have to have much value

They just have to have value to one GM. Not all 30 GM’s are as smart as Theo.

See:

We needed depth

These signings give the sox much needed, reliable depth . . .plus if Theo needs to move a young pitcher for a dynamite young catcher he can now do that. Also Thurston isn’t even on the roster anymore . . .I think he signed with the cards

by Ace0407 on Jan 9, 2009 10:26 AM EST reply actions

You do not win

with AAA vets as back ups.

Prospects are prospects. I would rather have a HOF arm in the rotation than Clay Buchholz or any other pitcher in our system.

But I agree with DD, these signings give the young talent a chance to progress on their own schedule. Remember what happened to Kennedy and Hughes last season.

by SoxAcumen on Jan 9, 2009 12:29 PM EST reply actions

yankees

Last year the yanks relied on Kennedy and hughes to fill gaps in their rotation heading into the season….and look what happened. I understand what you’re all saying with the depth and Vets.

I'm happy

Of course I wish we could’ve gotten Tex, only because I don’t have a lot of faith that Lowell will be healthy, but I can never doubt Theo. I doubted him with Drew, and he single-handedly was the only player to play on June last year – they would not have made the playoffs without him. I doubted getting rid of Nomar, and that was a genius move! I doubted other things (can’t think of what), and he has never failed us. I’m ecstatic that we got Kotsay back – he’s at least average in many positions, which is what the Sox need. He fills the roles of PH, backup OF, and backup 1B! Smoltz is the next coming of Schilling (for the Sox), and Penny has a lot of upside if he’s healthy. He’s only had 1 bad year!

by rmarx01 on Jan 9, 2009 12:45 PM EST reply actions

All but Bard

I like all of the signings, except Bard IF he’s the only vet. catcher. If’ he’s backup to a good catcher, I can live with that.
Baldelli, who doesn’t need to be over-used with Kotsay back, adds that other good RH bat to balance the line up. He’s got speed, and great D. If they didn’t sign someone like Kotsay, I’d be more concerned. His versatility takes pressure off if there is an injury to Drew. His bat isn’t great, but he can get some timely hits. Also insurance if something happens to Lowell or Youk. How can you not like that?
We’ve got some good, experienced pitchers on 1-year deals to buy the prospects time while we make another run. That’s the good part of this whole deal- no long term deals!
If Papi hits the skids in the next few years, you could have Lars at 1st, Youk at 3rd, and Carter or Baily at DH. You also have the available resources to sign Youk & Pap long term. Or as Gammons pointed out, the flexibility to get a good player being dumped for financial reasons around the trade deadline.
Theo has a plan that provides flexibility now and the next few years.

He’s extremely likely to bounce back offensively.

Some people are set in their ways.

I think people are more afraid of his inability to throw out runners, which should be fixed once his triceps heal.

Not that throwing out basestealers doesn't have value.

But if that’s the only thing going against Bard, I think you’ll be fine.

Bard has a higher upside than Tek now

I love Varitek, he’s the team captain and all that. But dear lord, have you seen him swinging the bat lately?

Mother---- him and John Wayne!

by MerryGoByeBye on Jan 9, 2009 11:08 PM EST up reply actions

Yes. But, give him a chance to rest and work on it this offseason.

Invite him to ST, and if he’s still swinging and missing at anything over 90mph, then release him. Sign him to a contract in the meantime, but make it like Bard’s.

He'll never take a non-guaranteed contract

I think Tek is done, unless he had any injuries that we still don’t know about, which is unlikely.

Mother---- him and John Wayne!

by MerryGoByeBye on Jan 10, 2009 12:32 AM EST up reply actions

True.

The first part, at least. And I forgot the whole “mentoring” role. How many players do we think we have on the MLB roster right now? From the State of the Roster post, I’m gonna say 23, which is all the IF, OF, Bard, Papi, first 5 SP, first 6 RP. So we sign Tek, have him as the platoon w/ Bard at C, and have one of Aards, Buch, or Masterson up until Smoltz is ready. There’s 25, with a back up at every position and a staff that is more flexible that a Olympic gymnast.

We can make room for Tek

or any other C for that matter. I have a question about roster restrictions. Can we only carry 25 guys on our team for the entire season (negating injury- which would lead to a replacement)? Isn’t there a period of time when teams have a 40-man roster?

by Schulz on Jan 11, 2009 1:50 PM EST up reply actions

But only 25 are allowed to play in any given games.

Hence the lineup cards.

Teams have a "40 man" roster all season

But obviously only 25 dress for all games until the September call-ups. Any player in your system that is not on the 40 man, but has been around for a certain amount of time (I think 4 years?) is eligible to be drafted by another team on the rule V draft or, if they get dropped mid-season from the 40-man, they have to pass through waivers. Meaning another team can take them. For example, we just took Dewon Day off the 40 man to make room for the new signings and Tampa took him from us.

by BTLove on Jan 11, 2009 8:02 PM EST up reply actions

He was a “MONSTER” when he was younger, but no one can pitch at the same level in their 40’s as in their mid-to-late-20’s.

That's what I was talking about.

He sucked with the Yankees b/c they forced him to shave his head. The party hair flips around when he pitches, and it distracts the batter – they start thinking about where they’re going after the game. Except Teixeira, who has to go get whipped.

very happy

Signing Saito is great. But still falls into what I said where everybody they signed was injured last year. But they all have a great upside and we can do without all of them if all of the injuries continue….which will not happen. Because in Baseball nothing is the same, they will be either better or worse than last year, not the same.
