State of the Roster

Woohoo. It's been an exciting 24-48 hours, hasn't it? Let's take a look at the Sox' roster as it stands.

Infielders: Kevin Youkilis, Dustin Pedroia, Jed Lowrie, Mike Lowell, Julio Lugo

No surprises here. Lugo is italicized because I've gone ahead and decided he's the backup. Yep. They left it up to me this year. Deal with it, Julio. As for the others? Lowrie should definitely be healthy and ready for ST, and the reports say that Lowell will be as well. That remains to be seen, I suppose, but if he's unhealthy there's a number of decent configurations that the Sox can utilize if he's out.

Outfielders: Jason Bay, Jacoby Ellsbury, Clutch McClutch, Rocco Baldelli, Mark Kotsay.

Well, that last addition is a new one. One that was rumored to be unlikely, but I'm quite happy about it. Kotsay returns to back up all 3 OF spots and 1b, while Baldelli will be the first man off the bench if the Sox are in need of another OF or a RH PH. There's a lot of flexibility here, and that's never a bad thing. Kotselli makes an excellent platoon if an injury strikes or Ellsbury continues to have issues with ML pitching.

Catchers: Josh Bard, George Kottaras

I put Kottaras in only because the Sox must lose him if he doesn't make the 25-man roster this season. Personally, if we go in-house for a platoon-mate with Bard, I'd prefer Dusty Brown. In any case, I don't expect the Sox to be at all done here. Could be foolish, but I'm proceeding from the assumption that a more accomplished catcher will be acquired and push Bard to the backup role, or that a prospect will be acquired who may do a straight-up platoon with him.

B.A. Mother F's.: David Ortiz

Because every roster needs one.

Starters: Josh Beckett, Jon Lester, Daisuke Matsuzaka, Tim Wakefield, Brad Penny, John Smoltz, Clay Buchholz, Michael Bowden.

The John Smoltz acquisition becomes key, because it allows 22 year old Michael Bowden to likely only serve as our emergency starter this season for double-headers and injuries. Given health, have to assume those in bold and not in italics will be the 5-man rotation to begin the season. The Sox clearly want Buch to push for the role, and for it not to be handed to him. Smoltz is just likely going to be a nice problem to have if everyone else is healthy when he is ready to pitch. I know he wants to start, and my guess is both he and Brad Penny have had discussions with the Sox about pitching in various roles this season. Josh Beckett remains listed first for a reason.

Relievers: Papelbonia, Oki, MDC, Masterson, Ramirez, J-Lo, Wes Littleton, David Aardsma, Brad Penny, John Smoltz, Virgil Vasquez.

Can really see here where Masterson rather than Buch or Bowden has almost become a bit of a luxury, and assuming interest, I think he'd be the one of the three to go in a trade. Ramirez, MDC, and Oki should be able to handle setup duties if he were gone, and Littleton/Lopez would probably then be called upon for GBs or multiple-inning stints. I don't want Masterson gone at all, but he'd probably be last on that list of potential starters we have, and though you can never have too many, I doubt he resurfaces anytime soon as a potential starter for us.

So there you have it. Roster isn't looking too bad on the whole, we've got only one, in my mind, glaring need (Catcher), and the positions being battled over either aren't TERRIBLY important (last bullpen spot) or have only decent/good candidates to choose from (5th starter, SS I guess...). Anyway. Anyone else feeling pretty good about our chances right now?

I’m feeling good about our chances :) This team is pretty set at this point, but I have to believe we’ll see a trade for a catcher. Signing Penny AND Smoltz was for depth, of course, but now it frees the Sox up a bit to trade Buchholz or Bowden to fill that last hole — catcher.

If they trade Bowden, I will be sad and will hold a immediate memorial on the FanShot wall.

From what I've read

Bowden seems more likely to be moved than Buchholz.

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

Will attend, dressed in all black.

Bowden is the best out of the 3, IMO. Trade Buch first, then Masterson.

I don't think Buch is gonna pan out, that's all.

Buchholz FIP was just higher than Masterson's

Masterson was lucky, Buchholz was unlucky. That’s the difference between their seasons. If Buchholz isn’t gonna pan out because of that, then neither will Masterson. And don’t forget about what they project to be. Buchholz could be a Cy Young winner, while Masterson’s ceiling is as a setup man.

Mother---- him and John Wayne!

I don't know why. I don't have the stats to back up my opinion, but I do have an analogy:

What you don't seem to get,

is that Masterson is in the bullpen. Bullpen guys are not nearly as valuable as middle of the rotation starters. Look at what free agent closers are getting paid, like $8 mil. That is less than Gil Meche, Carlos Silva and a bunch of other mediocre starters are making. So, unless you think Buch will be unable to stick in the majors and Masterson will be our closer, then what you are saying makes no sense.

by BTLove on Jan 10, 2009 5:46 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I'm not saying Masterson's better.

I’m just saying that I have a bad feeling about Buch. He feels like a star prospect that had a flash of absolute brilliance, and then folds under self expectations.

He'll stay good for a while, unlike Buch, who will either eventually become an ace, or be a bust relatively soon.

Buch isn’t even on the MLB roster consistently, and Masterson is a shut down/situation reliever OR a spot-starter/long relief pitcher.

That's what he seems headed toward.

I don’t see his windup as being sustainable for 30+ outings of 6 innings. That’s a lot of harmful stress done repetitively, as opposed to being a 1 inning reliever, where the effects of the stress would heal inbetween appearances.

Current Roster

I am very happy with our chances in this lineup. All of the signings in the past couple of days are great. I love Kotsay’s verstility, but I will miss the chances it would have given Chris Carter. I really like him, it took him a while to develop but he can definetly hit in the major league level. His bat really reminds me of Youks. Very patient with good power. Don’t forget that Youk didn’t get into the bigs till he was 25 either.

Other then that our team looks pretty stacked. Some of you are members of the Beyond the Box Score section. You may have noticed a post by Sky Kalkman doing a study of team WAR (wins above replacement).

He created a template spreadsheet that is used to predict how well your team will perform in 2009. I have it finished for the Red Sox and will post it this afternoon for feedback. While not trying to give too much away, you will all be pleasantly surprised by the results :)

Take this into account in your calculations:

I have had an extremely strong premonition that Wakefield will be destroyed early on and will NOT be a factor in the pitching rotation for this coming season!

by NG on Jan 9, 2009 12:48 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Is this a recurring dream of yours, NG?

:-)

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

by Drugs Delaney on Jan 9, 2009 1:38 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Nightmare actually.

I see Wakefield as little more than a little league pitcher at this stage trying to be what he cannot be anymore. When he got tagged so badly his last few times out, well that was not a fluke anymore! He should retire now before he really embarrasses himself.

by NG on Jan 9, 2009 4:52 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

He won't ever embarrass himself.

He’s played with class and should be in the HOF (eventually). Possibly the 2nd or 3rd best knuckler ever [Niekro(s)]

I'm a dumbass

It had not hit me that they might have signed Kotsay back because of Ellsbury, not because of the health of JD and Rocco. I somehow forgot how fucking big of a question mark is Ellsbury at this point.

Mother---- him and John Wayne!

by MerryGoByeBye on Jan 9, 2009 1:13 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Whaaaa???

Dude, I know that for most of the season his average wasn’t mind blowing, but it was his rookie year! He still stole 50 bags and hit .280, so I see no question mark.

by DirtySouthSox on Jan 9, 2009 3:25 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Jacoby will hit

It was his rookie year and he was an above average CF. I think if anything we might use Ells as trade bait for a catcher. I wouldn’t do it, but it is an option.

by drabidea on Jan 9, 2009 3:30 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

other need

a big bat.

Can Bay hit at a Manny level? Can Ortiz return to 2006 form? Can JD Drew stay off the DL and hit like he did last June?

The Sox need more hitting than they got against the Rays in the LCS.

by RickD on Jan 9, 2009 2:47 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I'd rather Ortiz

Return to his 2007 level, seeing as that was the best year of his career, OPS+ wise.

by Gnick on Jan 9, 2009 5:25 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Which netted us a WS, obviously.

A Papi steal is worth like, 11 wins above an average steal.

When people say we need a big bat...

who do they want to replace and who do they want to sign? There are no major upgrades left. Tex was the only one.

Very true

I agree with RickD. I wouldn’t mind an acquisition of Adam Dunn, even as platoon with all the outfielders and infielders and DH. But knowing Theo Epstein, a Trade Deadline acquisition seems very likely. Prediction….Hanley?

No chance of getting Hanley

Florida has him locked up cheaply. They don’t have to move him, so why would they?

I heard that the conversation between Theo and the Marlins GM lasted all of twenty seconds before Theo was denied.

Well, they were supposed to have a firesale this offseason.

But I don’t think they wanted to ruin the tradition, so they kept it to a minimum.

Sounds fair.

Has to be signed in Lugo’s blood though. We need some entertainment out of him before he goes.

That, I would pay to see.

As long as he’s wearing pinstripes. Has anyone tried to convince Hank that Jete’s getting old and Lugo would be a good replacement?

I didn’t know who Clutch McClutch was until I looked at the other OFs…. :(

Well, I'll appreciate for you to keep my zingers outta your mouth!
