Kotsay Resigns with Sox

Star-divide

According to MLB Trade Rumors the Red Sox have resigned Kotsay to a one year deal worth 1.5 million. I think this is a good signing, giving us more depth in the outfield incase Rocco can't start if someone gets hurt and a backup for Youk at first incase he has to play third or get injured. I didn't really expect him to take a deal as a backup but I am glad that we got him. Not to mention he has a hot wife(http://bigpapadaddy.files.wordpress.com/2008/03/jamie-kotsay-umpbump_com_8.jpg).

Let me rephrase -

Great!

Manny ain't the only bad man.

Not to monopolize

But I’m starting to open up to Buch for Teagarden. I’m not advocating it, per se, but a young catcher of Teagarden’s stature sho would be nice…

Manny ain't the only bad man.

Salty maybe?

What about Salty as well? Do you think the Sox may go after him now given the recent signings.

Also, I’m happy that Kotsay is back with Red Sox.

by blackecho on Jan 9, 2009 1:53 AM EST up reply actions

Rather not.

If we’re going to trade a top prospect for a top catching prospect, I want to be sure that the guy actually is a catcher.

Manny ain't the only bad man.

His wife is hot. But he was given too much credit last year, he only hit .226 for us and played good 1st base which is the easiest position

by 12trguitar on Jan 9, 2009 6:39 AM EST reply actions

I agree. I don't think Kotsay is all that.

But then we are talking about the final bench guy, so I don’t suppose it’s going to matter a great deal. He does have flexibility on his side, at least.

by britsoxfan on Jan 9, 2009 6:56 AM EST up reply actions

Kotsay is solid defensively at 1B and the OF

He is a decent hitter, and he signed a very cheap contract. It’s kind of hard to find 800+ OPS hitters for the bench. Having a good gloveman who can play all three OF positions is a good hedge against injuries to Drew and/or Baldelli, two of the more fragile players. Also, Kotsay is a career .281 AVG/.337 OBP/.414 SLG hitter. Those numbers are more in line with the .289 AVG/.340 OBP/ .418 SLG he put up in 300+ AB in Atlanta last year. He was good in the playoffs and was probably a little unlucky at the plate, as a lot of hard hit balls found gloves. I like the signing.

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

by Drugs Delaney on Jan 9, 2009 9:08 AM EST up reply actions

He was useless in the playoffs, offensively, in my opinion.

Or possibly in my offensive opinion. Stats here.

Oh, and look at this: his VORP with Boston. He was rancid! I’m not sure why it’s suddenly become groupthink that he was a positive for the Sox in 08. You might even argue that we would have been better off with Cora at first base.

I really don’t think he has anything to add with the bat – certainly nothing that Bailey or Carter could bring. I’m sure his defensive flexibility, and his relative cheapness, are why he’s been signed. But I don’t much care for him and I’m as deflated as you can be on hearing who the final piece of the bench is going to be…

Happy to be proved wrong.

I agree with the Brit.

Kotsay is essentially the second coming of Doug Mienalphabet—you really hope that he doesn’t get up to bat. I’d really prefer one of our youngsters in there. I’d be hard-pressed to imagine them doing worse.

by SoxDevil on Jan 9, 2009 9:26 AM EST up reply actions

Yep, a -4.2 VORP is bad

However, Mark Kotsay had a VORP of 11.0 with Atlanta, in a much larger sample size. He is very good defensively—and cheap.

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

by Drugs Delaney on Jan 9, 2009 9:40 AM EST up reply actions

That's much better than I assumed.

I suppose if we need a 1B or CF for any decent period of time a trade can always be assembled. It’s nitpicking for me to go on about the fifth OF too much while we still don’t have the catching situation resolved.

"no1 has time to read your long comments, are you writing a book?"

by britsoxfan on Jan 9, 2009 9:50 AM EST up reply actions

I have to disagree

Kotsay was smacking the crap out of the ball during both the Angels series and the Rays. He just hit everything to a player. Teixeira and Pena took at least 3 hits away from Kotsay and he mashed two bombs to left-center in each series that were exceptional catches by the CFs.

Kotsay is an excellent hitter.

by SoxAcumen on Jan 9, 2009 12:26 PM EST up reply actions

I totally agree about Kotsay's bad post-season luck

I’m not sure I’d call him an excellent hitter, though. I’d say he is a solid option off the bench.

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

by Drugs Delaney on Jan 9, 2009 1:40 PM EST up reply actions

fair enough, I think his versatility is what is most attractive about Kotsay. Plus the left handed bat is nice as well.

by SoxAcumen on Jan 9, 2009 6:19 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed

He is very versatile with a good glove at 4 positions.

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

by Drugs Delaney on Jan 9, 2009 6:41 PM EST up reply actions

Disagreed

Drugs, it looks like you didn’t really do your research here. Kotsay’s career UZR in the OF is -3.3, and it’s -5.1 in CF. Last season, fangraphs calculates that he was only worth $million dollars, and he was worse in 2007.

by Gnick on Jan 10, 2009 12:13 PM EST up reply actions

$2 million*

by Gnick on Jan 10, 2009 12:14 PM EST up reply actions

I think most defensive metrics are flawed. However ...

By UZR, Manny was a better defensive LF with the Sox than Bay last year. Manny’s UZR in LF was better than Coco’s in CF. Jason Bay had the worst overall UZR on the Sox in 2008.

Also, by UZR, Baldelli is worse than Kotsay in the OF. Here are their career numbers:

LF
Baldelli: 0.2
Kotsay: -3.3
CF
Baldelli: -6.4
Kotsay: -5.1
RF
Baldelli: 0.8
Kotsay: 1.8

I wouldn’t want Mark Kotsay strating for the Sox. But his versatility makes him an attractive bench player.

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

by Drugs Delaney on Jan 10, 2009 2:07 PM EST up reply actions

I don't know

He hasn’t been worth over $5 million dollars since 2004, his 2007 was absolutely atrocious, and the most generous projection system (Bill James) has him at a .714 OPS.

by Gnick on Jan 10, 2009 5:21 PM EST up reply actions

He isn't getting $5 million

According to Sean McAdam of the Herald, Kotsay will get a $1.5 million salary plus incentives.

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

by Drugs Delaney on Jan 10, 2009 5:30 PM EST up reply actions

I know he's not getting $5 million

I was saying he hasn’t been worth $5 million the last 4 seasons.

by Gnick on Jan 11, 2009 12:16 PM EST up reply actions

He's our fifth outfielder

and back-up first baseman. He’s a serviceable sub, an gives us lots of flexibility.

And he’s not Alex Cora.

Manny ain't the only bad man.

by tommy.otm on Jan 10, 2009 5:40 PM EST up reply actions

Exactly

Especially the Cora part.

whats wrong?

Alex Cora was a great bench guy, great defense, and an Ok bat…his defense and bat were better than Lugo!!! and cheaper

by 12trguitar on Jan 11, 2009 1:01 PM EST up reply actions

Oh god...

No, no again, and if OK means below replacement level (IIRC), then yes on the last part. Lugo’s got a decent bat for Fenway, and if he would focus while fielding, he’d be fine at SS. He’s just stupid and not clutch.

He is probably league average on D

but is terrible with the bat. His OPS+ from the last three years: 56, 75, 87. But trending up!

by BTLove on Jan 11, 2009 8:07 PM EST up reply actions

He was awful for a bench shortstop.

His glove simply couldn’t carry him. He lost a step or three in the field the past couple of seasons.

"no1 has time to read your long comments, are you writing a book?"

Yep

Lugo is better than Cora defensively.

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

by Drugs Delaney on Jan 12, 2009 7:13 AM EST up reply actions

Not according to UZR

Lugo was better last year (although they were both negative), but over the past five or six years, Cora has been consistently better than Lugo.

by BTLove on Jan 13, 2009 1:19 AM EST up reply actions

Lugo was better the last two years

And Cora’s UZR has dropped steadily the past three seasons. Like Jeter, Cora has the range of a step or two in either direction at short. That’s not what you want in a utility IF. Cora can still play 2B, but SS is a stretch.

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

by Drugs Delaney on Jan 13, 2009 7:25 AM EST up reply actions

Lugo was only better in the counting UZR, but not UZR/150

You have to look at the rate stat or its like saying, “Varitek was a better hitter last year than Lowrie because he had more hits and walks.” In 2007 Cora’s UZR/150 was 17.3, in 2006 it was 13.1. Lugo last 3 years: -1.6, 4.4, -2.7. Now, in now way am I a proponent of Alex Cora being on this team, but he can still hang in the field.

by BTLove on Jan 13, 2009 1:02 PM EST up reply actions

He is an established major leaguer that can be relied upon.

He can play multiple positions and has actually had good years in the past. While he has not been a particularly good offensive player since 2004, he has been better than most teams’ 5th outfielder. I would have preferred a better backup 1b, like Eric Hinske, but because of the unreliability of Rocco, we needed someone else to plug into the outfield if needed.

by BTLove on Jan 10, 2009 5:01 PM EST up reply actions

Hey Hinske can play RF at least...

Remember that diving stop he had in right almost at Pesky’s Pole? Nearly tore his face off.

by DirtySouthSox on Jan 10, 2009 8:18 PM EST up reply actions

Mark Kotsay makes $1 M more than Baldelli in base salary, and only $0.25 M less than Baldelli if Rocco stays on the active roster. We really got a steal with Baldelli.

Resign----hmmmmm

Resign as in to resign a player,

OR

resign as to resign from a job??

Aren’t these the same words?? Did anyone ever think that these two uses of the same word are just about diametrically opposite each other. English is a strange language??

Yeah. I think it's because the word "with" is used, as opposed to "from."

Either that, or the word meaning “to sign again” didn’t come about until sports business became widely followed.
