Around SBN: Steve McNair Dead - Former NFL QB Shot and Killed

Our Bench is now better

Lugo - excellent (first time with him in the same vicinity)

Baldeli - Excellent (if healthy of course)

How many teams have this quality ready to fill in?

Now, why is Dusty Brown not a candidate? Or even Mentioned ever? 84 games at AAA and .290 and 12 Knocks? can't do worse than Tek!

And Carter or Bailey are adequate as that third option.  I believe that trading Bowden or Buchholz for a catcher prospect (salty or teagarden) is not the way to go.  Surviveat that position for 2 years and either our prospects pan out or Mauer is a free agent.

Kotsay

We should get him back. That would give us a potential bat off the bench and a solid back-up 1B man.

Well, I'll appreciate for you to keep my zingers outta your mouth!

I'd love to see Kotsay return

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

Baldelli

Already is our 4th OF. I really don’t see us carrying a 5th OF, even though they could also be backup 1B.

by Gnick on Jan 8, 2009 9:17 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

We did last year: Bay, Ellsbury, Drew, Crisp, and Kotsay.

Drew and Baldelli are injury risks. A 5th OF may be necessary.

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

Jon Van Every?

Come on, it’s the 5th OF, it doesn’t have to be a great player. I think that if we don’t sign Kotsay back, JVE could do it.

Mother---- him and John Wayne!

looks like theo agrees with you

kotsay just signed a one year contract for 1.5 mil + incentives

by Tippecanoe on Jan 9, 2009 12:55 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I want Kotsay, too!

He was great switching to 1B in the ALCS last year. However:

Ellsbury, Bay, Drew, Baldelli, Ortiz, Youkilis, Pedroia, Lowrie, Lowell, Lugo, and Bard are all pretty much set for next year. Add another catcher and that’s twelve players. I think the Sox probably only want twelve maybe thirteen hitters, so they aren’t likely to get Kotsay. And what could Kotsay add that Chris Carter couldn’t.

by DirtySouthSox on Jan 8, 2009 7:02 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Bard isn't set

His contract isn’t guaranteed. He has to win the job in Spring Training.

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

by Drugs Delaney on Jan 8, 2009 7:36 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah

But I figured there would be two roster spots for catchers anyway.

by DirtySouthSox on Jan 8, 2009 8:32 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah, I say Kotsay...too!!!

I really like looking watching Jamie Mark play… :)

Not sure if I'd call Lugo excellent.

Good speed, yes, but questionable D and a weak bat. And last time he was a bench player (right before we signed him, actually) he was total crap.

Manny ain't the only bad man.

He does get on base well.

And, if you need a late-inning throwing error to set up a save situation for Paps

Lugo is yiur man.

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

by Drugs Delaney on Jan 9, 2009 10:01 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

If anything

He’s got great speed off the bench. Dave Roberts didn’t have much of a bat, not GREAT defense, but he had the most famous stolen base in Red Sox history. Not that I’m comparing the two or anything, but I think Lugo’s speed is extremely valuable now with Coco gone.

by DirtySouthSox on Jan 8, 2009 7:18 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

This.

Any time we need a late-inning pinch runner, Lugo will be ready to go.

by Schulz on Jan 8, 2009 8:21 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Ya, he can steal a base.

But he’s no Dave Roberts.

And Dave Roberts only function was to steal a base. That was the only reason he was on the roster. Lugo will be called upon to spell 2b, SS and 3b.

Manny ain't the only bad man.

defense

that’s what Kotsay brings that Carter doesn’t. And he’s insurance if JD & Rocco go down.

... and if Lowell is hurt

Kotsay can play 1B and Youk 3B.

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

by Drugs Delaney on Jan 8, 2009 7:36 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

That's true

Plus, Kotsay seemed to fit perfectly late last year

by DirtySouthSox on Jan 8, 2009 8:33 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Adam Dunn

I hope Theo signs him. He could be the outfield and 1b platoon with the other players there and the power bat that the Sox want. Plus, players are coming very cheap right now( Giambi NYY 21mil.-Giambi OAK 5-6 mil.)

"We're not going to give up," It doesn't happen, so who cares? There's always next year. It's not like it's the end of the world."

He'd be wasted on us.

He should sign with the Mets or Giants, play LF and hit 40 dingers out of the #4 spot.

Manny ain't the only bad man.

by tommy.otm on Jan 8, 2009 9:45 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

True

Also, Dunn is more of a DH. He is awful defensively.

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

by Drugs Delaney on Jan 8, 2009 10:04 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah, huge waste.

You’ll sit Drew, Bay, Youk, or Papi for Dunn? Even if hes cheap all of those positions are strengths that we really don’t have a reason to platoon. I doubt Dunn would want a backup job anyway.

by BTLove on Jan 9, 2009 12:03 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Exactly

Even if we offer a bigger contract, he will take less money to start for a year or two. Being a backup/platoon player is not a good career move for him at this point.

by Schulz on Jan 9, 2009 11:18 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Hell yes.

This is a good team.

Now all we need is another catcher…

Manny ain't the only bad man.

by tommy.otm on Jan 9, 2009 1:15 AM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Zaun or Tek?

Pretty much the samething.

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

by Drugs Delaney on Jan 9, 2009 10:02 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I'll take Tek.

Manny ain't the only bad man.
