Varitek may turn down deal
Mike Holley on WEEI is reporting from his sources that if the deadline was today that Tek would turn down the deal and either "sit out" as Holley is putting it or try and find another deal from another team which as of now in not there. Tek appears to be insulted by the offer. Personally it was his ultimate decision to turn down arbitration no matter if Boras miss read the market or not. Tek is what he is now and can't expect to be paid for past performances what the Sox do from here I don't know I really like Teagarden but he will cost a boat load.

I thought so
I’d turn it down too. It’s not as simple as ‘take the money and run’. It’s about pride. Tek turned down 10 mil, it was a mistake. But he just can’t show it by taking less.

This has to be a Boras/Tek ploy
… a last minute attempt to get more money by planting a story (like the Heidi Watney escapade). I just have trouble believing Jason Varitek is THAT delusional.
But, if it is true, it jibes with Tek’s sulking last year and calls into question Tek’s leadership. We’ll find out Friday whether Tek is a me-first player or a tough negotiator.
I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

Good.
Go to Japan.
Go to an independent league.
Become commissioner of Australian baseball.
Take classes at the Iowa Writers School, and write the great epic autobiographical baseball novel.
Join the Marines, and singlehandedly win the war in Afghanistan.
Run for the Senate, confront corruption, and deliver a heart-felt filibuster that takes us back to the founding principles of the nation.
But don’t expect to be rewarded after performing poorly all year. If any of us sucked all year on the job and then demanded the same above-market salary, we would be unceremoniously shown the door.

Love it!
I have my performance review tomorrow and was considering rejecting any offer less than $10M but in light of the Varitek situation…

Hell, I give performance reviews where I work, and all us boss types already cut our salaries so we wouldn’t have to lay anyone off.
Another point in favor of the Sox signing me — I would take the minimum and wouldn’t be much worse than Tek.

I played baseball in high school too
I had scholarship offers to play tennis and baseball, I could have gone pro on tennis. I dropped all that because I didn’t want that way. Took the UIC, mainly because of my father, who graduated there.

I’m not a tall guy, which is pretty bad for tennis players. I could have gone pro, or go to college with it. Decided I didn’t want to play it any longer.

Cause I got a few on the Commish Bush thread, but they shouldn’t count. Not that I’d come anywhere close to catching e.coli.

Wuss!
Tek and Boras took a agmble and lost. I’ve held on to stock too long too and I don’t feel “insulted” after I’ve mis-judged the market and had to sell low. He should take it like a man. I’m sick of these whiny, spoiled millionaires and their sense of entitlement.

I loved what MLBTR got from the report.
Something along the lines of, if ‘Tek declines the offer, the Sox will either move on or consider making a lesser offer. Hahaha. I hope they do take the time to put together a lesser offer if he doesn’t take this one.

If Tek does not sign, i am done with him
Here is my view on this deadline. The Red Sox need a decision bc if he doesn’t sign they need to look elsewhere via trade or FA.
So, now after his agent’s advice and his decision to turn down arbitration he is upset and might “sit out 2009”?
Really Tek?
What a fantastic teammate he is. Very T. O. of you.
So bc you made a bad business decision the Red Sox must part with one of their best prospects to trade for another player.
Tek gambled and hired the worst agent on the planet and now he will take his ball and go home putting the Red Sox in an incredibly bad negotiation to replace him.
Texas and AZ are laughing right now.

What's with all the Tek hate?
I know he’s not a good player anymore and I don’t think we should give him any more than what we have offered (if that), but why the personal insults? He’s not a me-first player. He plays the game right and he always has. He just wants to maximize his earnings potential like every other person on the fucking planet. There is a decent chance that if he sat out until after the draft, he could command some solid money. I’m positive that the reason he has no other offers is the whole Type A free agent thing. He knows the Sox have all the power right now and are wielding it. If he wants to walk away, thank him for his time and let him go.

Its that he dragged this out and by waiting he is putting the Sox in a very bad position. If he wanted to walk, then walk. Its not the Red Sox fault he turned down a 10 million dollar payday.

Tek isn't holding anything up.
We are still looking to trade for a young guy regardless of what happens with Tek and we brought in Bard to cover our bases. Its not like there are a bunch of opportunities we’re passing on while we wait on Tek. Its pretty clear hes not that significant an upgrade over what we have (especially offensively), but I think we want to give him the opportunity to come back.
Also, if he accepted arbitration, it is not guaranteed money. The Sox could cut him before a certain date and they would only have to pay a fraction of the arbitrated amount (25%?).
by BTLove on Jan 30, 2009 1:26 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Pretty much.
But I think it’s 1/6th of the amt, so only about $1.67 million.
by Brad West on Jan 30, 2009 12:32 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
so the guy who is the captain of the team, a fan favorite and still above average at the defensive side of the game is going to get cut bc the Red Sox have a history of disloyalty? This scenario happened ONE time with Todd Walker and the Padres a player who had very little time with the organization, not the captain and well past his prime.
Stop listening to Boras, he is a snake oil salesman.
And yes, his not signing did very much hold up the Red Sox and what they want to do with their future catching situations, not to mention the negotiation position weakened with Texas and Arizona. I cannot believe you think otherwise, MLBTR, Hot Stove, Baseball Tonight → one of the most talked about topics in the past 3 weeks.

Todd Walker
You’re arguing that he was above average defensively? Based on personal observation, he had the range of a soap opera actress.

I think he’s saying that the only player to be cut after accepting arbitration was Todd Walker. The captain, defense, fan-favoritism stuff was about Tek.

I still don't get it...
How did Tek taking so long hold up other catcher negotiations? Do we think that the Sox are now no longer interested in the Texas catchers? or Miguel Montero?

Exactly!
This is what I have been talking about. We are such hypocritical bad fans Teks numbers suck, and we hate Boris. Then it turns personal on Tek. The business people will work it out. That’s why they are paid to do it and we whine here! If he comes back or not, I don’t care, But I will be loyal to our captain and thank him for the memories. Why hate on the guy? WHAT A BUNCH OF CLOSET YANKEE FANS YOU HATERS ARE! Act like a Red Sox fan and separate the personal attacks from the business. yeeesh!

you don't seem to understand
i dont think anyone is trying to personally insult the guy. We all love him. But if he really wanted to help the team he would have accepted the offer by now so that we didn’t look desperate at catcher to Texas and Arizona. Business I know, but Tek knows what it looks like and he’s putting the team he loves in an awkward position because he made a bad choice. That’s not fair on his part. He could have accepted the initial 10m or he could have accepted this one instead of drag it to the deadline and said I may sit out if I dont get what I want.

I doubt arizona and Texas are going to give their prospects away because we resigned Jason Varitek.
I mean there are other teams in the league that would like some young catching prospects too (MFY anyone?). I really don’t think having Tek or not alters that negotiation at all.
And people were personally insulting the guy, to quote, “…it calls into question Tek’s leadership…” and “I’m sick of these whiny, spoiled millionaires and their sense of entitlement.” and “What a fantastic teammate he is. Very T.O. of you.” and it goes on. Let’s judge the guy by what he does when he’s with the team. The rest is just fucking noise.
by BTLove on Jan 30, 2009 1:32 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
To be honest
I am a bit irritated by Tek. The crap with being pintch hit for in the playoffs and essentially forcing Francona to have to address it in the media even though he was told this would happen is not something you expect from a team leader who knows his role. That is what is so funny about all the guys here that say they want Tek back to be a “mentor.” Who says he wants that role? Furthermore, in his entire career he has held up teams (Minnesota, Seattle and Boston) with drag out negotiation. In the case of the Sox, he already got a contract 4 years ago in excess of what he was worth, and it was viewed even at the time as a sentimental gesture. The contract offered now is also far in excess of what he is worth, and he says he feels “insulted.” Contrast this with a guy like Lowell who took a real discount after an MVP like season, and who would play shot if he had too. That is a different sort of guy. Ask around on the team who the guy in the clubhouse is that people most look up to, and my guess is that we would be surprised.
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think Tek is a bad guy, but to say that he is “insulted” by the Sox offer when it is 2X as much as he is worth in this market is alone enough for me not to be on his side.
by Buzzy on Jan 30, 2009 9:55 AM EST up reply actions 1 recs
I totally agree
No one hates Tek. However, I do think he has been delusional. He is not in a position to negotiate a lucrative long-term contract. I believe Tek’s supporters overrate his i intangibles. Let’s not make Tek’s situation out to be anything other than what it is. He is an aging, declining player who cannot come to grips with the fact that he is no longer an elite player. The Red Sox have been very charitable toward Tek—far more generous than necessary, in my opinion.
To call those of us who are critical of him “closet” MFY fans is ridiculous. Red Sox fans have always been critical of players. Even Ted Williams was booed in Boston.
I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

Absolutely
This smacks of the same kind of attitude Latrell Sprewell displayed four years ago when he complained that his $14.6M per year salary was too low by saying “I’ve got my family to feed.” There are only two big differences I can see — Sprewell was actually still a semi-decent player at the time (though not worth what he was being paid), and Tek isn’t half the jerk Sprewell is.
But if he continues to whine that $10M is too low for a player of his caliber, he’ll be inching closer to Sprewell.
