Bucholz
What if bucholz comes out in the beggining of the year and shows the stuff that we saw in the end of 07. This is obviously a very good thing for the sox. But what do you think happens to penny, smoltz, and wakefield. I don't think we can give to bullpen spots to wake and smoltz when they bring the same thing, and i definitly don't think penny would want to come out of the pen. Wake to me is the first man out, but that still leaves us at six.
This is obviously not a bad thing for the sox, the depth would be great, But what do you think they do if the begining of this season goes perfectly, with no injuries and a strong bucholz?

Well, Clay will probably start the season in AAA unless he is Cy-Young quality in ST. But, if you remember, our rotation last year this time was 1. Beckett 2. Matsuzaka 3. Lester 4. Schilling 5. Buccholz 6. Colon. What happened? Schilling injured, Buccholz couldn’t handle it, and Colon didn’t appear until May. We saw much too much of Pauley and Zink and Bowden. Masterson was OK as a starter even. But, it saw the trade for Paul Byrd and a lot of mixing and matching on the part of Terry Francona. Lesson learned, you can never have enough pitchers. That said, however, as I saw on MLBTR, the idea is that Theo is keeping payroll open and loading on talent for the possibility of the mid-season trade from a mid-low market team who can’t handle the salary. Some names that come to mind….Hanley Ramirez, Ryan Howard, Joe Mauer, Matt Holliday, Salty….

Beckett Matsuzaka Lester Schilling Wakefield Bucholz Colon is what it was
and i know its not likely bucholz to be in the rotation but i feel if he gets an oppurtunity this year he will succeed and then the sox have them selves the log jam even though its something every team wants, and would a 6 man rotation be that crazy.
Also i have a feel dice k is gonna get hurt in the WBC, hope im wrong though

Could you use puncuation, please? Kinda hard to understand some of what you mean.
Wake and Smoltz are completely different pitchers. And Penny would still be a starter:
Becks, DiceK, Lester, PENNY, Buch
Unless you have another guy in mind? Even if he gets moved to the pen, Penny will be fine. His arm would be fresh every time out and he’d be able to have an All-Star like performance of endless fastballs.
For those children who claimed they’ve been a fan of their favorite team all their life, or even since they were about four or five years old: bullshit. I agree
Best case scenario, we have a plethora of talented SP, and we trade one of them mid-season for a position player. I’m usually not pessimistic, but I feel as if one of Papi, Lowell, or Drew will miss significant time this year. While our backups are all serviceable, we might use a healthy pitcher to find a replacement in a trade.
I wouldn’t think that the Phillies are a “mid-low market team,” but I could be wrong. Holliday is the most likely out of those you mentioned. Only 1 year left on his contract- although idk why the A’s would trade 1 year of Holliday for 1 year of starting pitching. We’d have to toss in a prospect.
oh, how could I forget to mention Tim-May!!! My favorite player

Schill
Two of the three are not going to work out and Curt will come in about August.
the difference between a yankee stadium hot dog and a Fenway frank is that they dont sell yankee dogs in October anymore.
pedro martinez anyone?

For cheap?
Sure. Same deal with Manny, but both would have clauses in the contract:
Pedro – injuries
Manny – f’n with the chemistry and behavior in general

do you think
Pedro can handle the workload of a SP in the AL east?
I mean I love the guy, he is my favorite athlete ever, but he is not the same Pedro. Pedro, currently, is what I like to call “Hippy” Pedro. Letting his hair grow, throwing 60% change ups, he is all about the love now, going with the flow.
The days of “Business” Pedro punching 95 on the gun and then dropping a 75 mph change up on Jeter are all gone, unfortunately.
Nah
It would kill some memories for average at best production, I’d pass.

Ive got to believe
that having vets like Smoltz and even guys like Brad Penny who have been around a few years can only help Buchholz, Bowden and the young farm system arms.
True
But these guys only get to see the young arms in spring training, so the impact they have is minimal unless Buch makes it up to the bigs.

though schill. went through some changes in pitching….and pedro doesn’t pitch anywhere better than fenway….if ppl get injured and he’s available, Theo PULL THE PLUG!!!

Kinda in hurry to get back to the politics thread. And still adjusting to a new laptop. But the hypocrisy adds to the effect.

If he doesn’t…well, the Sox need to pull the trigger on a trade soon. (See “Pie, Felix, trade value of.”)
Right now, the rotation as it stands saving player ouchies and the like:
Beckett, Lester, Matsuzaka, Penny, Wakefield
with the potential of Smoltz, Buchholz, and Masterson just in case someone explodes (and Zink in case everything really goes to heck in a wire basket)
Buchholz will be good enough, hopefully, to replace Wake in the 5 hole.
(Oh, and people? Schilling isn’t coming back. I’d hope Epstein isn’t that foolish.)
Am I the only one
who believes that Masterson is never going to the rotation unless its an emergency fill in type situation. I think Masterson is going to be like MDC, middle relief.
I don't think he's going to start either
It’s a lot like Carlos Villanueva on the Brewers—he can start, it’s just probably not the best use of him out there.
Agreed
