2009 Catchers
With less then 27 days until Catchers and Pitchers report for spring training, the tension is brewing. What will the FO do with our catching situation. Will Kottraras and Bard be enough? Do we need to resign Tek? Do we need to trade for a rookie stud? With recent articles coming fromTony Massarotti and Schilling it makes you question what the Sox should do going forward.

A couple of notes
I did have Salty/Montero with Kottraras backing them up as an option because I don’t think the lack of experience is an option. We need atleast one veteran backstop.
I know that we don’t neccessarily have to trade Bowden for Montero to get it done, we could probably get away with less or get back more. I left that as the option because that trade will definetly get it done and we should expect a similar loss.
The same goes for Buch for Salty. I know no one wants to trade Buch for Salty, but we should expect to lose a significant amount if we want the trade to go through.

+1
For those children who claimed they’ve been a fan of their favorite team all their life, or even since they were about four or five years old: bullshit. There’s always that certain event or certain player that draws to the sport and draws you to a team. Another option
I’m not ecstatic about any of those options, but we definitely need to resign Tek to mentor a young C. I don’t like Montero and I don’t like Salty. I don’t think Montero or Salty are the answer, though I’m not sure who is. Either way, DO NOT TRADE BUCHY FOR A CATCHER (unless it’s Wieters)!!!

I completely forgot about Wieters
Buster Posey? Wieters is rated higher, but I saw Buster play during his whole college career, and he may have been the best Florida State Seminole ever (I didn’t see JD play much.) I think Buster is more raw.

Buchy?
Only for Teagarden or Weiters.

The Orioles
will not get rid of Weiters… Wishful thinking, but it’s not going to happen so really no reason to throw it out there. The Orioles do not have a catching surplus like the Rangers, there is no way they get rid of the best young catcher in the minors, especially to a division rival.
Are you people seeing something online that I do not, cause this is like the second or third time someone has mentioned him. I’d really like to think that there is a reason behind it and we’re not just throwing names out there thinking that since we’re the Red Sox we could get anyone we wanted.

I don't know if
you’re saying the Sox should try to trade for him, but I don’t think the Giants are going to trade him. Well, maybe but it would take a VERY pretty penny to get him.

?
Giants? Who are you talking about? Montero plays for the D-Backs, Weiters is w/ the O’s and not going anywhere, Salty+Teagarden play for the Rangers…

Buster Posey, I think.

Buster Posey, it was supposed to be in response to ’Boston415’s comment.

Interesting Results
It looks like there are 2 answers everyone keeps voting for, and both include Tek. What happened to all the people that didn’t want to sign Tek back? I am assuming the vote was with the condition of signing him for cheap (~$1M)?

It's amazing what happens when you can vote semi-anonymous.

I think its also a function of our realiziation that we will have to lose Bowden or Bucholz for a catcher.
But just for the record, I voted for Kottaras/Bard.

I'd be in favor of losing Buch for Teagarden.
I voted resign Tek + Bard.

I'm just ready to let 'Tek go...
in exchange for a first round pick. What is the monetary value of two top picks? I think its gonna make it really hard to justify anyone signing Varitek for any price.

Since they can't be traded, and not all of the top picks sign, there's not an NFL-like value system for picks.
But, here’s the NFL equivalent of what you want: http://www.draftcountdown.com/features/Value-Chart.php

This values picks in comparison to each other.
I wonder if there is some sort of monetary valuation. I’m sure that teams have their own values that help them make decisions in signings. In the Varitek signing, for example, lets say a team valued him at $2 mil per, but knowing they lose the first rounder, they only offer $1 mil because that pick was worth that full million dollars. These are the subtle things that Theo gets paid a shit load to think about.

That changes from year to year though.
I guess you could look up the average value of the contract offered to or accepted by each picking slot’s players.

If nobody signs Tek,
we don’t get the first round pick, because there is nobody to give it to us.

You'd think a team like the Nats would try, considering that it'd be a 2nd rounder from them.
1st 15 picks (bottom 1/2) of 1st round are protected.
