Henry to meet with 'Tek

According to MLB Trade Rumors John Henry is on a plane to meet face to face with 'Tek tonight . . .Without Boras.  Hopefully this is a fruitful trip and the two can find some common ground.  They are good friends so it shouldn't be to hard.  I hope this pisses Boras off.  If they do bring Tek back that would solidify the catcher's spot without having to give up Bowden or Bard.  I for one will be all to happy to keep both Bard and Bowden.  I think Bowden is the best pitcher in the system and ever since he was moved to the pen Bard has been really solid.  If we shore up the catchers spot and keep our pitching depth then the sox are free to look at other options down the line . . .like a certain Twinkies catcher . . .

Boras

Does Boras get his 5% if his clients negotiate the deal in spite of him? A-Rod could not get a deal until he tossed Boras under the bus. Now Tek.

Boras is the most over hyped agent in the history of representation. If half my clients could not get a deal done and dealt with our opponents without my counsel, well I would be bagging groceries at Ralphs or Stop n. Shop( is that the proper supper market chain in New England?)

I hope he comes to his senses and signs.

Wally Martinez's shop?

For those children who claimed they’ve been a fan of their favorite team all their life, or even since they were about four or five years old: bullshit. There’s always that certain event or certain player that draws to the sport and draws you to a team. For me, Nomar Garciaparra was that reason. - Nick Coviello: I Try To See Rocco, But All I Think Is Nomar; 1/9/09

Good.

I’ll take Tek back.

Tek + (Bowden or Buccholz or Masterson) > Motnero or Salty, in my opinion.

Plus, it wouldn’t be the same around here if NG were’nt spiting fire about Tek.

Manny ain't the only bad man.

Agreed

Depending on what Tek costs.

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

Won't be more than $10mil.

Prolly closer to $5, maybe with incentives.

I’d rather it was less than $5 million. Tek probably isn’t worth more than $3 million.

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

Each? Or total?

Greg Zaun, a similar catcher

Got $1.5 million/1 year contract from the Orioles. Based on that, $ 3 million is generous. If the Sox want to give Tek options that can raise the level of the contract, that’s fine—provided they’re not too easy to attain.

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

by Drugs Delaney on Jan 17, 2009 10:31 AM EST up reply actions

No way

We should give Tek a 2yr deal.

by Gnick on Jan 17, 2009 11:49 AM EST up reply actions

To clarify

I am saying that there is no way we should do that, not “no way, we SHOULD give Tek a 2yr deal”.

by Gnick on Jan 17, 2009 11:50 AM EST up reply actions

Even if they get ‘Tek back, I think that makes it even more certain to pursue a younger catcher. Tek is by no means league average as Theo said. He always has a plan to stay that way, and Theo is all about young talent. I wouldn’t mind Masterson for Salty, one for one. Masterson was good down the stretch, but he’s a starter, and I don’t know he’d adjust to the bullpen.

"We're not going to give up," It doesn't happen, so who cares? There's always next year. It's not like it's the end of the world."

Schill has some comments up

If you look on his 38 pitches blog on weei’s website Curt is convinced that the Sox will bring back Tek because of what he brings in prep and game calling.

While I can’t argue when people feel that these are secondary traits when compared with obp and what not I must admit that Tek would help the staff and while Schilling’s arguments are weak in some areas I feel that if all of these pitchers who are quality ML arms feel Tek is invaluable then we should probably listen

Plus as bad as Tek was last year I still love him, huge soft spot for the guy. I think he will improve on last year ( not like that is hard to do) and hit between .250 and .260 and slugging between 17-22 hr

I dont know

if we resign Tek, I think the Red Sox will go all in on Joe Mauer, either by waiting for his FA year to come up or dealing players to Minnesota. By 2010 we should know if Mauer is really going to sign for a hometown discount or go on the market.

I have said it before, let Texas sit on their catchers. In the end they will have 3 catchers and no arms to go with them.

Red Sox are in a better negotiation position with all their young arms.

Not sure I like this

Love Tek, but spending more than 4MM on him now is shit.

The meeting tonight...

between Henry and Tec still remains unclear if he will sign. Update

Seems a little strange that Henry went to Atlanta w/o Theo or Lucciano.

Tek is not Benjamin Button!

No strange case miracles in this situation as he is just too old. He should retire, and hoping that he will get younger is ridiculous. Let logical consequences take over and let him go. Move on!

by NG on Jan 17, 2009 10:01 AM EST reply actions

See, this is why we need to sign him.

Keeps NG coming back.

And we just want him to platoon with Bard. Teach him, and possibly play better if he’s not tired out.

NG will be back.

We still have Julio Lugo, after all.

But, with no Timlin, Tek, or possibly Wake if he leaves...

will he jump to the MFY, who have many more aging players?

He won't jump ship.

There will always be Sox Who Suck on the team. Even some of our best squads have had players who severely underperformed or never were above average. Derek Lowe was awful for the majority of 2004 – he was nearly left off the playoff roster, and wasn’t supposed to be a starter. The 2007 team had Julio Lugo in the worst year of his career.

True.

And now, with his extra 20 pounds, Lugo will have MORE momentum to suck!

You make sound like the grim reeper!

If these baseball players have any responsibility and common sense, the millions they have made while they could perform should hold them in good stead in retirement for life.

If they still need to do sports-like actions, golf is a good game for an aging athlete type! What we do not need is to pay for them to hurt the team in their quest for Shangri-la.

You're the one with a ancient prophet for an icon.

And athletes shouldn’t earn anywhere close to the amount they do. Or actors. Somewhere along the line jesters became WAY overpaid.

1+1

Year 1, $ 4MM + $1MM if he can muster an OBP of around .333;
Year 2 (vesting with GS – 110, OBP – .333 and CS% – .245), $ 4MM + $ 1MM with an OBP around .333; + $ 1MM w/ All-Star

Rock me, sexy Jesus...
