Youkilis, Sox close on extension
[Note by Allen Chace, 01/15/09 4:27 PM EST ] Lovely Amalie chimes in: The deal is "close" but not complete. Let's see whether we have an announcement tomorrow afternoon.
Gammons via MLBTR.
... the Red Sox and Kevin Youkilis agreed to a four-year deal worth more than $40MM. There's also a fifth year option. The deal buys out two arbitration years and two free agent years.
If true, heckuva deal.

The FO are suddenly having a tremendous off-season. Unbelievable. They got great value for Youk and a great deal for Pedroia, and they’ve picked up great bench options, strengthened the bullpen into something to be feared, given us about nine options in the rotation.. I’m delighted. And really, really impressed.

True that.
Even if Gammons got the financials a bit wrong (and that could be, I suppose), no doubt the announced deal will probably be no more than $4/48 plus the option. TRE-mendous.
Now to fool Jon Daniels into giving us Teagarden for Devern Hansack or Jeff Corsaletti, and we can just get ready to play the games.

Not Devern!!!
Yeah, I think Theo gets GM of the year if we win the WS.

Makes you wonder why deals like Tex's go down.
How can one justify paying Tex more than double of what Youk is going to make? Glad to see the FO lock down a standup guy and tremendous player for the next 4-5 years. (if the deal goes down)

Well, there's a fundamental difference in the negotiations.
Well, two.
One. Youk has only one season being a traditionally top offensive first baseman (i.e. flashing good power)
Two. Teixeira was able to accept bids from everyone. Youk, being still an arbitration player, has only one “bidder” for his services.

True
but I was more referring to the type of person Youk is. He could have waited for free agency and could probably make $15-17 mil to the highest bidder – maybe more if his power numbers continue to improve.
I’m glad he’s a member of the Red Sox.

If he had waited he would have taken a big risk...
he could go year to year the next two years, get arb money and gone to free agency. Now, if he had gotten hurt or maybe it turns out last year was a fluke, then he’s up shit creek. To say he is a “good person” because he is not going to free agency is absurd. He is guaranteeing himself that he never has to work again outside of baseball, no matter how he plays. Not because he’s a good person, but because hes a smart one.

Maybe he's Wake-like loyal.
That’d be nice.

Also, you have to ignore the first two years of the contract, because Youk was arb eligible.
Even if he’s worth $20MM on the FA market, he’s only going to get, say $10MM and $12MM from arbitration.

Well, the prices have been skyrocketing in arbitration cases, though, right?

Good catch
Though Bowman even says it’s based on the ESPN report. There’s enough out there that I’m convinced the extension is real, but I have a feeling the terms will turn out to be at least a bit different than what’s reported in some way.

Love it,great deal penny's to Tex
I think this shows our farm system that they want to build threw it . It gives the minor league coaches credibility and the young guys another thing to point to and strive for. If the numbers are true Tex will be payed 4.5 times more than Youk this is why their going to stay away from free agency and stick to the farm.

I concur with the above posts...
If its close to what’s being reported, well then I’m happy and its a good deal for the Sox. I think once Tex got away the club decided to look at why we didn’t win it all last year. Conclusion, the Rays hit like a gazillion homers and pounded our staff for the better part of 5 games(remember the game we really should have lost…)
So figuring regression with Youk and Dustin, getting the same from Bay and Drew, and improvement from 3B(Lowell hopefully), SS, CF, Papi and catcher, its still a 900 run lineup.
So what do you do? Shore up the middle relief and try to improve starters 4 and 5.
Now we just need to sort out the catching problem….

I couldn't be happier
I’ll always have that image of Youk dancing goofily outside the dugout after the Sox hit back-to-back-to-back home runs at Fenway in ‘07. I hope he’s always going to be a Sox.
Now we need to sign Johnny Pap Smear long term…

Sean McAdam says it’s official pending a physical:
The Sox and Kevin Youkilis [stats] have a four-year extension in place that will become official when Youkilis passes his physical tomorrow, an industry source confirmed. The deal will be worth at least $41.25 million, with a $1 million signing bonus, and salaries of $6 million in 2009, $9 million in 2010, and $12 million each in the 2011 and 2012 seasons.

Not sure I'm a fan of this
We already had Youk under control for 2 more years, he’ll not be all that young after that. I just don’t like signings after career years. But I don’t know, I like Youk enough.

Young enough
he’ll be 34 at the end of the base deal, and the option pushes it to age 35. I don’t think there’s reason to expect much drop-off at that point. And the beauty of this deal from the team’s perspective is that it doesn’t have years at the end of it when a real drop-off could be expected (such as Tex’s deal).
by argo0 on Jan 15, 2009 11:17 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
He's younger than that
2009: 30
2010: 31
2011: 32
2012: 33
2013 (option year): 34

So I figure...
If he keeps up his performance of last year, he would get about $15-18 mil over the next two years, then probably close to $20 mil per in free agency (again, this is if he repeats last year’s incredible performance.) that means Youk is giving up anywhere from $16-20 mil over the next four years in exchange for $35 mil in security. A good deal for both sides.

No chance with Paps
Word is he wants a big free agent payday.
I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

What do you think he'll go for?
Maybe 5 years, $50M?

Mariano got 3 years/$45 million
Who knows? It depends on the market when he is a FA.

But F-Rod got 3/$36.
If I were the Sox I’d sign him now, in the down market.

I’m not so sure of that, because that was the word with Pedroia, too, and he settled pretty nicely. Maybe with the market the way it is, and Youk and Pedroia signing extensions, maybe Paps will too.

Yooouuukkk!
At first it sounded like Youk or his agent was going to wait until after the season when negotiations first started. The price tag for him is cheap considering he’s a gold glove who can play both 1B and 3B (when called upon) and brings a lethal bat to the plate….he could have had a bigger payday being a FA if he really wanted. I know sports is a business and many players run toward the money and are not attracted with the team or the whole package. I don’t know this to be true, but I have a feeling that Youk really likes it playing for the Sox…and we like it too!
by Dirt Dog on Jan 16, 2009 12:49 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
From 2006 to 2008, Youk was worth 2.2, 3.8, and 5.5 wins above replacement, according to Fangraphs.
To be worth $10MM per year on the FA market, he needs to be a 2.5 WAR player. That seems like a very smart gamble, no?

The thing I don't like about this contract is that they already had Youk for 2 more seasons
I’d wait and see at which level he’d be performing after those 2 years, and then sign him back or not. I just never like signings after career years, even if it’s Youkilis.

But that's the Sox' MO
They won’t sign long-term contracts for players under their control unless it includes at least one year of free agency as well as a club option.

I get it with young players
I would have waited with guys like Youkilis.
