Smoltz introduced as a Boston Red Sox
Welcome to Boston, Mr. Smoltz.
John Smoltz was introduced as a Boston Red Sox this morning. The Globe has a nice video interview with Smoltz after he was introduced.
I'm really excited to see Smoltz as a Red Sox. It's actually an honor that he'd join the Red Sox. We're going to watch a future Hall of Famer gut it out on the mound and it's going to be fun. Who knows how he'll perform, but just having him in the clubhouse will be huge for this team. I'm sure he'll teach the young guys a few lessons along the way.
I might have to get a Smoltz jersey now...

Welcome John Smoltz!
Smoltz is one of my favorite pitchers in MLB. I’m looking forward to seeing him on the mound in a Sox jersey.

I watched the video and really had no idea how smart and articulate Smoltz is. I figured he was a smart guy, but it was refreshing to hear a professional athlete converse the way he does.

Oh fuck!
He’s wearing 29! Shit, fuck, goddamn! How am I supposed to know it’s his jersey and not Keith Foulke’s or Arquimedez Pozo’s?
Mother---- him and John Wayne!

You know...
…if you’d just had the foresight to buy Foulke’s or Pozo’s jersey, you’d already have a Smoltzie.

I was thinking the SAME thing!

For those children who claimed they’ve been a fan of their favorite team all their life, or even since they were about four or five years old: bullshit. There’s always that certain event or certain player that draws to the sport and draws you to a team. golf pro
I wonder if he’s going to buddy up and take any of his new teammates to the golf course so him and his buddy Tiger can school them on the greens.

He has a golf tournament in Florida every year.

I am about 99% sure I am buying that jersey as well. LOL. Smoltzie a Red Sox, I still cannot believe it. Now if we can just get Pedro to show up and make a cameo this season, I would be in heaven.

I'd buy that jersey, but...
I’d get so many dirty looks down here. Working for Yankee fans is one things, but I also work alongside unhappy Braves fans.

Neyer on Smoltz's health
Saw this discussion on ESPN basically praising the raw stuff on display in Smoltz’s throwing session, but suggesting that the strength of Smoltz’s stuff is not indicative of his health, comfort or the structural soundness of his shoulder. In other words, Smoltz’s injuries are not reflected in episodes like Curt Schilling’s post-Oakland near-no-no crapfest where his performance sucks, but theoretically by his arm detonating into a shower of sticky crimson streamers with two outs in the seventh. At which point, he says “ouch.”
For what its worth, I’ve gotta think that Boston has a legitimate reason to suspect that Smoltz can be effective throughout the half to two-thirds of the season he’s active. I also think that they’ll monitor him so his warrior propensities don’t damage his long-term availability (again, in the context of the season).
Whatever. Basically, I’m comparing him to Bartolo Colon from last year – and regardless of what eventually happens, I’m 5000% more psyched to see Smoltz out there. Plus, more Sox expenditures on player development and scouting now that we don’t need to spend $ 50K per game on the clubhouse spread.
Rock me, sexy Jesus...
