Sox sign Saito
Continuing our flurry of recent moves for once great, recently injured pitchers, the Red Sox have signed Takashi Saito to a 1yr/1.5mil contract that could reach 7mil if he pitches well. The team also included an option for 2010.
In my mind, this is a great move. Saito has always been dominant when healthy, it's not like he has a long history of injury. If he fails, he's not taking up much money at all. And if he succeeds we have a 2010 option on him. Overall, great signing, the bullpen is going to be nasty if everyone remains healthy.

just like Penny & Smoltz
great arms with proven success
I love the possibilities of the entire staff
It’s gonna be fun to watch!

IF
in our pen we have
Lopez (who is so underrated)
Delcarman
Oki
Rameriez
Masterson
Saito
and Pap
It will be the best in the majors!!!! Assuming they stay healthy.

Lopez is UNDERrated? I don’t know about that…

I think he is
I mean, he’s had his share of bruises, but he’s a great situational lefty and pretty much usually gets the job done.

I’m not sure he even deserves to be rated…

Javier Lopez
should be dealt ASAP. A lefty who cannot get lefties out…not my favorite player.

Yes.

I was just looking at the roster, and I think he’ll probably get dumped so the Sox can make room for Smoltzie in June or whenever he’s ready to go. That’s when I’ll hold a funeral service.

2006-2.70 ERA, 2007-3.10, 2008-2.47. Those are pretty telling numbers if you ask me…

ERA isn't that great of a metric.
He seems to blow up when we really need him – like the playoffs. http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=1663&position=P

True
the problem with ERA for relievers, is that they often come in with guys on base, and it’s there job to get out of that situation. ERA doesn’t reflect when they allow a hit to score a runner or two, and then shut down the side after that.

Where's MGBB?
He needs to see this. I think Saito takes a number in the high 30’s to low 40’s.

Not really for our purposes.

No.
Nomar was awesome, a great hitter and a very good SS. But Manny is in a whole other world. Nomar’s best OPS+ were 153 and 155. Manny’s career OPS+ is 155.

But Manny was/is one the best hitters ever. Can carry a team for weeks at a time. If not months. Nomar was great, but Manny is better.

As I recall, Nomar wasn't a GOLD GLOVE worthy SS.
But man, when he was putting up .370 type averages he was awesome. Go ahead and file Nomar’s career in the Tony Conigliaro category. Could have been one of the best to ever live and then came the injuries.

Sorry I never got around to my point.
Yeah, Manny was better. And you can say all you want about how Manny “kills teams,” but Nomar was a team killer, too. At least Manny was (for the most part) consistently smashing the ball.
p.s. Just to clarify, I am not one of those people who still wishes Manny was on the team.

Yeah, but you have to take into account positional adjustments.
Manny played one of the easiest positions in baseball at a very low level. He is one of the best offensive forces to ever play the game, but most of those great offensive forces played the same position. Nomar’s 1998-2000 seasons are three of the best seasons for any shortstop in the history of baseball. If he had continued at that level he would have been one of the top five shortstops of all time.
