Why doesn't Papelbon mix up his pitches more?

I am no expert, but what I think is happening here is that Papelbon is just throwing fastballs. Most major league players can hit fastballs if they know the fastball is coming. Why doesn’t the pitching coach or the much tauted Varitek convince/teach Papelbon to mix up his pitches more??

The thing is

He was up, he should have been hitting. Bunting was a bad choice for obvious reasons: 1) he sucks at bunting in general and 2) Papi would simply be walked if by some miracle he put one down successfully. Tek is lucky he didn’t bunt pop into a double play during that AB.

Yeah, it was a very dumb move

Percival is a guy Tek could hit, you know… If anything, it would have wasted an out when we couldn’t have. But this one is all on Paps, he had an awful game and we lost it because he couldn’t hold the lead. Shit happens, I think. Even Mo blows saves here and there.

as stuffing the ballot box for a guy with this line .218/.299/.354/.653 at the break. Are you kidding me? That’s Mendoza-esque. Great job though I’m sure you have loads of talent ready to take over for him next year. Not to mention he is making more than our entire starting pitching staff this year. Hmm would I rather have Kazmir, Shields, Garza, Jackson, and Sonnanstine or Jason Varitek? Good luck the rest of the year though.

Tek was having a solid season at some point

He had a 168 OPS+ in May. Then he started sucking, and his all-star selection was wrong. But before June, he was actually having a nice season. Not all-star, but he did catch a no-hitter and was hitting the ball well. I’m not saying he should have gone to the ASG, but it wasn’t one of the worst selections ever.

I rather have Shields and Garza. I don’t give 2 fucks about Kazmir, Jackson and Sonny. But Shields and Garza are very good pitchers. Tek has a sort of inflated contract now, but it seemed very nice before. If you wanna talk about wasting money, then remember Lugo or Percival.

Best of luck for you guys too, I hope we meet in the ALCS so we can show you guys what the Indians learned last season about the Red Sox. :)

I will concede the point on Varitek as .811 OPS coming into June was nice

but I think it speaks to how broken down and old he is. Not an All-Star for sure I am glad we can agree on that.

Interesting in that Kazmir and Beckett I would consider a push. Beckett has a BABIP that is a little too high with Kaz’s a little too low. Beckett gets more called strikes, Kazmir more swinging. Kazmir is younger so I will give him the edge. Jackson is basically Matsuzaka without the groundballs. I would be on suicide watch if I had to see that guy penciled in every 5th start. Sonnanstine is a serviceable 5th, surely you would prefer him over Byrd.
You are the ones that wasted money on Lugo. We traded him for peanuts, Sawx (lame) signed him for above market value just to spite us. That appears to be working out well for you.

I can’t wait to meet you guys in the playoffs if you can get by an Angels team that has vengeance on their mind. Don’t forget to bring the Umps as they play such a vital role in your success. :)

Your point about Tek being in the ASG is shit because around here most of us voted for Mauer and Kinsler (yeah, over Pedroia, if you can believe it). And take it easy on the Tek hate, we already have one guy here who does it, and we sure don’t need another. :)

Kazmir has a 1.360 WHIP. If you wanna compare him to anyone, it’s not Beckett. It’s Bronson Arroyo. Plus, Beckett is God in the post-season, while Kazmir never been in the post-season. Dice-K has far better stuff than Jackson, it’s not even funny. And you got me on Sonny, I sort of like him. While I wouldn’t want him badly in my team, I’d take him over Kazmir and Jackson, because he will never ask for as much money Kazmir will, and Jackson just plain sucks.

WHIP is a terrible stat. It equates HR's and singles as equal

It is almost as bad as comparing Kaz to Arroyo:

Kaz 30.534.3/20.2%
Arroyo 41.1/25.8/21.1%

Nothing there, how bout pitch results

Kaz 30.5% 34.3% 20.2%

Clearly Kaz is light years ahead of that scrub in this department.

I said drug policy. I would think Greenies being banned would have more of an effect since everyone did amphetamines and some percentage less than everyone did HGH (or still do) and steroids. Catchers have it rough I imagine him not getting his fix before games has taken its toll on his body. Look how hard he used to grind his teeth on some dip. Yeah he was definitely popping pills. Just like everyone else, no big deal.
