Comments on Momentum sucking!

Well I am just now coming out of shock from last night's Wakefield absolute disaster, and rather than staying quiet as I first was going to do, I am now inclined to get wordy for my daily therapy! The Red Sox had momentum building over the last week, and with the loss by the Rays yesterday, the one thing that the Sox should never have allowed was a momentum sucking black hole to develop. What could have been that potential momentum sucking black hole?? Lugo? No he was not in the lineup. Varitek? Well he has been improving lately, and besides, one fielder-type player can only have only so much effect on the team effort by himself! Let me see, Hmmmmm? How about a totally unpredictable knuckleballer who does not know from pitch to pitch what will happen, and whose overall record is not that impressive. Yes, lets throw the dice and put our momentum high streak in jeopardy.

I know lots of fans here will go out of their way with relatively meaningless numbers to support all current Red Sox, but sometime the reality of protecting one's momentum at critical times calls for hard decisions. Letting Wakefield sink in his own crap until the game was so out of reach that the team was depressed (the absolute definition of momentum sucking) was not good managerial skills at this critical time. Francona should have had relievers getting ready as soon as Wakefield walked 2 players, period.

Last nights loss may have done more damage than most expect, but either way, it was unnecessary to allow Wakefild to single-handedly blow all that important built up momentum in this critical time, IMO!

I blame Beckett

He unfairly increased our expectations on Friday. Had he merely been good, then last night would not have been such a letdown. But he had to go and be great, thereby leaving us all the more vulnerable to momentum sucking.

who would you have pitched instead of Wakefield?

and do you really think that losing last night’s game will have a negative effect on today’s game? seriously?

You new here?

We’ve been having this conversation repeatedly since the 2007 season went down in flames many, many times before it didn’t.

Manny ain't the only bad man.

Last year

NG proposed having every pitcher pitch just one inning in every game.

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

Hmmm... A different pitcher each inning,I would love to see that!!!

I’d like the Yankees to be the team that tries it though…

What's that called, a Johnny Wholestaff?

Two related points

First, I want a pitcher that has potential control over his pitches, and not one where every pitch is a role of the dice. How can one ever count on chaos?

Second and most important, if you are going to pitch a loose cannon knucleball pitcher in a critical situation, be overly aware of the wild momentum sucking potential and have standards to act quickly upon. For example, get 2 walks in an inning and your gone. Two very hard hits in an inning, and your gone.

Francona’s seeming neglect last night can only be justified if there was nobody else in the Sox organization with more predictable skills than Wakefield. Now I find that hard to believe. Every pitcher can have a bad game, but can you truthfully tell me that you have faith in Wakefield’s potential from pitch to pitch like you would with almost any other pitcher when they are seemingly doing well? I don’t, and have to hold my breath on almost every pitch he throws.

"How can one ever count on chaos"

Many run news organizations and countries depending on chaos.

Honestly NG, I thought that was a joke. You really want pitchers like Schilling or Pedro or even David Wells (back in the day) throwing one inning per game?

How does that benefit the team? Am being serious, not flip, I don’t get it

"You know," Girardi said, shrugging his shoulders, "it didn't work."

A pitcher for every inning?

It was just an idea that I wondering about. Don’t spend a lot of time dwelling on that one. I just made a logical extension on the closer idea since every team now has a closer! Why not have a closer for every inning.

BTW, still am not sure it would not work!

by NG on Sep 7, 2008 2:12 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

It's not really a logical extension of the closer idea

It wouldn’t work for so many reasons. I’ll name a few:

You’d blow your pitching staff out in April. (How many relievers make more than 70+ appearances in the regular season? How many throw 4+ times a week?)

A team’s best pitchers tend to be starters. Why limit their innings?

Every team may have a closer, but there are very few elite closers.

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

We should get rid of those. Why shouldn’t I be able to plow through the intersection?

NG

I was away when it happened, but did you post something similar when Lester gave up 7 ER in 2.1 innings in Toronto, August 23rd? How about when the Jays shelled Beckett (8 ER in 2.1 IP) on August 17th?

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

I think the manager has to act much quicker!

If there is something recognizably wrong in/with a pitcher even early on IN A CRITICAL GAME, get him out of there before the game is too far gone. Momentum is a funny and fragile thing, and in my opinion if you look to protect momentum in your decisions, I think you end up with better results.

by NG on Sep 7, 2008 2:06 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I could not disagree with you more.

and you sound like a Cubs fan.

Wakefield was gonna have trouble last night bc its a homerun friendly park and it was very humid, but he NEEDED to pitch bc of the rotation.

Last night was a push, actually it was still a gain by the Sox with the Angels and Rays getting beat in extra innings.

Now that would be demoralizing….losing a close game and getting shelled in the 13th and 15th inning knowing you must win bc the Sox are the best team in MLB.

Did you expect the Sox to win every game the rest of the season?

by SoxAcumen on Sep 7, 2008 1:31 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Or...

…with the game already out of reach, Wake could have taken one for the team, spared the bullpen, and pitched six innings.

It’s one game. Get over it.

I heard the Sox have interest in A.J. Burnett

If so, get your asses ready for much more ‘momentum sucking’ talk. :)

He has great stuff and awful numbers

I hate him. He’s great in some games, and just awful in others. And to have a nearly league average career ERA with that stuff…

critical situation???

Yesterday’s game was anything but a critical situation. It wasn’t a playoff game or a must win situation. The Sox didn’t even lose ground to the Rays, as the BOTH lost yesterday.

Agreed, it would have been GREAT if they had won another, but this is baseball and you typically lose every third or fourth game.

As someone already pointed out, it was a humid day in Texas. Less movement on a knuckleball in heavy air.

Oh well… lost by a bunch, get ’em next time!!!

by mpieretti on Sep 7, 2008 4:41 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Actually

even 90-win teams tend to lose more frequently than every third game. If a baseball team won 2 out of every 3 games, its record would be 108-54. The only team I know of that won over 100 games in recent history was the phenomenal 2001 Seattle Mariners (116-46).

Sox and momentum

I believe the Red Sox are a heavily mometum dependent team, as how they won the world series games the last 2 times have shown. Once they get it into gear this time of year, WATCH OUT! That is true this year, and before yesterday’s game, I thought the accelerator was being pushed to the floor and at a good time. Wakefield virtually single-handedly destroyed that feeling, and this must not be allowed to happen to that degree again.

Godd thing the game was not that critical, but stretch time is here, and no more momentum sucking allowed to that extent by one player!

by NG on Sep 7, 2008 5:06 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

What happened to our momentum down 3-1 against the Indians? You are completely overreacting to a bad game. I’m surprised you weren’t trying to drive Beckett and Lester out of town a few weeks ago if you’re this upset.

Dustin Pedroia, 2007 April?

Did he suck momentum then? Look at him now.

It’s just one game.

You wanna talk about some real momentum sucking?

What about Tom Brady done for 2008? That’s some seriously motherfucking bad news. I’m a big fan of 2 guys in the NFL, and one of them is already down? That’s effed up…

MGBB:

Just more pressure on the Sox to make something happen and for the Celtics to pick it right back up for those of us who are sports fans of the “classic” regional teams. Note I’m not holding my breath on the Bruins.

A Yankee fan at work was talking about the Brady injury, and I “had” to remind him that I still have a baseball playoff race to worry about.

Yeah

I think the Sox will do great once again in post-season, but I just don’t know about the C’s. They got older, and didn’t improve the roster… Before last season, I was one of the doubters and they won it all. Since it worked great, I’ll try that once again. :)

A NBA Finals between the Suns and the C’s is really my dream. I’m a big fan of Steve Nash, and the Suns-Celtics games last season were great. Let’s see.

Patspulpit says some guys from New York were celebrating. What the fuck is wrong with New Yorkers, man? If A-Rod or little Manning went down with an injury, I’m pretty sure most of us wouldn’t be happy about that.

And about the Bruins, I lost track of them. I don’t get NHL here where I live, so I just don’t follow it.

Ya

What’s up with the Bruins? I grew up watching the Sox one half of the year and the Bruins the second. It’s sad that they’re so crappy. They’ve got to turn it around, the fans are out there. The Celts reversed course pretty quick, and while I fear the B’s are more than a couple stars away from winning anything, a couple stars would be nice.

Manny ain't the only bad man.
