Around SBN: Chan Sung Jung Wins Thriller Over Dustin Poirier

Once and for all: MVP talk

Yes, there has been many blogs on this. Yes, you are probably getting tired of hearing about it. And we still have a month to go!

MVP? Who will it be?

Dustin Pedroia has been destroyin', hitting when it matters and carrying the team on his tiny 5'7 body since, well, half the team went on the DL.

Carlos Quentin, with tons of power, helps propel the White Sox, but has injured his wirst.

Ian Kinsler isn't looking good either, with a season ending injury, but had been Dustin Pedroia's rival.

Josh Hamilton? Whatever happened to him? He supports Texas's motto: Good hit, no field.

Milton Bradley: I have the strange feeling he will win it. Good average, power, OBP, and he's a switch-hitter.

Grady Sizemore started out early leading the AL in home runs. He has since cooled down, but still has a good bat and great glove.

Pick a player, any player.

Personally, I think it's either Pedroia or Bradley. Destroyah has been hitting nearly .400 since June 14, and seems to just keep getting better.

Texas has had an MVP baton passed around, from Hamilton to Kinsler to Bradley, but they can't seem to hold on to it long enough.

Know a player who deserves it more than any of these guys? Comment below.

a player from texas isnt going to win it, heres why: in order for a player on a non-playoff bound team to win a MVP, that player has to be downright dominating. If bradly or hamilton were going to win the mvp theyd have to blow pedroia out of the water, or at least bring the rangers a few games within the playoffs. If its close at all, pedroia trumps bradley and hamilton, because hes propelling his team straight into the playoffs.

Also, what does it say about texas that they have 3 would-be mvp canidates, kinsler, bradley and hamilton, and they cant get it done? Yes i know their pitching is horrid, but still, i think the sports writers are going to look at that and go “well if all 3 of them were mvp worthy, youd think the team would finnish above .500”

Texas, Bradley, and Pedroia

Yes it seems as if Pedroia is single handedly catapulting us into the playoffs right now, but this is not the case in reality. Pedroia has been our best hitter but in our last 10 games our pitching has given up a total of 26 runs! When your pitching only gives up 2.6 runs a game it doesn’t take a genius to figure out you’re going to win a lot. Its not Bradley’s fault that Texas pitching sucks, and as such, he should not be penalized for it.

but

he’s still just a DH. If that argument works against Papi, it has to work against MB.

plus...

Bradley has a history of anger problems and bad mouthing his team, teammates, etc
Pedroia is the heart of the Sox right now. In other words… MVP
Here’s to hoping anyway

DH

Good point on the fact the he’s basically useless in the field. But I don’t think Pedroia should have the upper-hand in any sort of intangible aspects of the decision, because they are just that, intangible. No one knows how much influence Pedroia or Jeter or anybody actually has on the rest of their teammates. And if I had to guess I’d say it would be pretty small.

Maybe more importantly, because of his attitude...

…the press hate him, and they’re the ones who vote for the award.

Hey, that’s what cost Teddy Ballgame the MVP even when he won the Triple Crown; it damn sure ought to hurt a player nowhere near as dominant.

It's really between 3 guys, I think

Justin Morneau, Carlos Quentin and Dustin Pedroia. I can’t pick one. I’d love to see Pedroia winning it, that’s for sure.

Mother---- him and John Wayne!

Pedroia looks like the only one who will make the playoffs and not be injured.

He who hesitates is tagged out between first and second base./ Media is plural for mediocre./ If the left part of the brain controls the right part of the body, then only lefties are in the right mind.

if you're going to put Rangers players on the ballot, why no Grady Sizemore?

he’s been by far the best player in the league. defense matters, too, right?

Oh, and in the NL?

191. OPS+. Guess who? If you said Corey Patterson, kudos! :)

OK, I just updated to add in Sizemore.

Sorry, he should have been in the original post.

thanks

i give him a .034% chance of catching Pedroia in this poll ; )

It's only 12-1.

Hopefully the Cleveland fans don’t act like the Rays fans and start hate-voting on a serious poll.

Remember when we were kids and we mixed sodas together and called them "suicides"? It was OK though, because Dr. Pepper was always there.

a serious poll, huh? maybe i should have given my vote more thought.

and are you referring to the bandwagon fans poll? because the Red Sox won that thing going away even without the help of Rays’ fans.

I made it so that people could vote for non-baseball teams by choosing other and commenting below.

Like one of the last comments: the guy said Laker fans, Cowboys fans, and someone else. Mighta been the Sox, can’t remember, don’t feel like looking it up. And I think that lack of fans at the recent Yankees-Rats series kinda took the Rats out of it, and should’ve boosted the MFY votes.

Now 17-2.

Maybe those odds were right.

With Quetin hurt

I think Pedroia gets it if he keeps it going through September.

I Know Fair's Fair But I Vote For Sox Players Only

That’s the way it’s always been and that’s the way it always will be. Much as I respect the apparent neutrality of the sports writers who have a say in all this, if I could cast a vote for MVP, I would ALWAYS choose a Red Sox player, and if you call that un-democratic I just don’t give a sweet fuck! :D Whether it comes to online Delivary Man of the Year or Allstar Votes or MVP, I believe every true Red Sox fan should support only Red Sox players.

Forever Red Sox, screw all those pink-hatted babes, 'got no family, 'got no friends, 'got no life--RED SOX I LIVE FOR THIS.

Justin Morneau? Francisco Rodriguez?

My vote goes to Pedroia, but you have to include some of the other tangible candidates. Not just a guy who washed out on the DL and a bunch of guys from sub-.500 teams.

by StickRat on Sep 18, 2008 5:33 PM EDT reply actions

Rodriguez?

Papelbon could have had as many saves if he had as many chances, it’s just the level and type of offense. Are they an on/off power team? Do they play small ball and conserve runs?

My last sig was too long, so my new one is: He who hesitates is a mediocre ambidextrious stupid person who thinks the Rays suck and stole Joe Maddon's shoes while thinking he was at a baseball game but was at church.

by BoSox415 on Sep 18, 2008 8:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Papelbon vs. K-Rod

While Papelbon is quite valuable, he is not even the MVP of the Red Sox team. Look at the Angels top to bottom. They very well could finish the season without a .300 hitter, without a 100 RBI man, and with less than 150 HRs as a team. Their best pitcher ERA-wise is Ervin Santana at 3.33. Rodriguez is the MVP of the team with the bet record in baseball. He is due to get serious MVP consideration, and will almost certainly finish in the top five.
