MVP: Ready to lead?
[Camera pans over a crowd of adoring Chicago White Sox fans.]
Crowd, chanting: MVP! MVP! MVP! MVP!
Voiceover: He's the biggest celebrity in baseball.
Voiceover: But, is he ready to lead? With the economy in crisis, Carlos Quentin wants to raise your ticket prices.

Voiceover: And with energy more expensive than ever, Quentin continues to oppose drilling singles to the opposite-fielding. Instead, he flagrantly wastes his power on hitting homeruns, increasing our dependence on foreign (out of the field) runs.

I love me some Destroyah
But Carlos Quentin has to get my vote right now. He’s hit .287/.394/.571, good for a .965 OPS compared to Pedroia’s .883 OPS. Quentin has notched 96 runs, 37 HR, and 100 RBI to go with 7 SB and 66 BB. Surprisingly, though, Pedroia has more Total Bases (290 v 274).
If Pedroia keeps tearing things up that may swing me ultimately in his favor. Josh Hamilton is also a candidate for the award.
Berkman deserves to run away with the award for Senior Circuit MVP.

Although … Quentin could be out for a week plus. That hurts.

Pedroia will need over 20 home runs, a maintained .330 BA + batting title, and 20+ stolen bases to compete with Quentin.

Quentin may have a serious injury that could take him out of the lineup for several weeks. This is only further proof that he is not ready for the position of MVP.

i just read that hes having surgery and its pretty much a 0% chance hes coming back before the end of the season. Pedroia’s mvp chances just got alot of bigger.

In fairness to Quentin,
Hamilton, Sizemore, Youk, etc., a large part of Pedroia’s platform consists of a noun, a verb and 5’6".
Manny ain't the only bad man.

huh, i'm thinking defense matters, too, no?

Who are you responding to?
I certainly haven’t mentioned defense.
Going by observation, Pedroia plays good defense. At a glance, some of his numbers (fielding win shares, OOZ) are pretty good too.

i'm responding to the thread in general, in which nobody has mentioned defense
Yes, I agree Pedroia has been good this year.
Youk has been quite good again.
Quentin rates quite poorly, although scouting report puts him above average.
Hamilton has been about average.
Kinsler is bad.
Grady Sizemore is very good.
Morneau is a bit above average.
Joe Mauer is good.
But POSITION matters in addition to fielding your position. The center fielders and catchers listed deserve a huge bonus, while the corner outfielders, first basemen and DHs deserve a penalty. Think of it this way — would you put Quentin or Morneau in center field or behind the plate? No way. But if they COULD play those positions, wouldn’t they be a lot more valuable? Yup — and that’s why Sizemore and Mauer are such studs — they have very good bats AND play tough positions very well.
