And Cormier pitches a clean inning.

Figures. We’ve had a tough time putting away teams, winning the third game of a series. I hope that’s not the case this afternoon.

Cormier looks very much like a friend of mine

It’s sort of creepy. Let’s hope the Sox will get to him, however…

Man

The Sox really have a hard time finishing a sweep…

The breeze is blowing in.

Bay hits one very hard, but it’s caught by Payton feet away from the wall.

Not sure about the call there

2 of the balls looked very much like strikes, but whatever…

What the heck did Coco do in the 1st?

by tarrkid on Sep 3, 2008 2:54 PM EDT reply actions

He missed the ball

It hit the top of his glove, and then the wall.

Mother---- him and John Wayne!

by MerryGoByeBye on Sep 3, 2008 2:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Coco tracked a ball to the warning track

off Markakis. He had his glove up, and the ball hit his glove and popped out (he probably didn’t squeeze hard enough), allowing Roberts to score. He was charged with an error.

Pedroia goes deep.

has 17 HRs. If he hits 20 this season, steals 20 bases, and hits 50 doubles, he’ll be the first second baseman named Dustin Pedroia to do that in MLB history. I think that’s good for a pat on the back and a free pizza at Chuck E Cheeses.

Tek?

Mother---- him and John Wayne!

by MerryGoByeBye on Sep 3, 2008 4:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Because he consistgently sucks at bat in the clutch

He is the weakest offensive link on the team by far as long as Lugo stays away. H really does need to retire as the best alternative for him now, IMO

by NG on Sep 3, 2008 4:24 PM EDT up reply actions

meant Bay

would be nice to have Tek as backup for another year but do not think he would like it too much

by OilCanBoyd on Sep 3, 2008 4:25 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed

I’d like Tek back as well, but not for 4 years or so.

Mother---- him and John Wayne!

by MerryGoByeBye on Sep 3, 2008 4:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Why are you always so anti-Tek?

One weak link in a rotation full of All-Star or future All-Star talent ain’t bad. And he contributes a ton with the intangibles.

Don't question my choice of teams, or I will have to go all troll on you.

by bdalebs on Sep 3, 2008 4:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Prove it?

These intangibles I always hear about? I say they are no different for him from any other catcher, but what we can measure, his offense, is awful, just awful!

by NG on Sep 3, 2008 4:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Calling four no-hitters, two in the past 365 days.

Nuff’said.

Don't question my choice of teams, or I will have to go all troll on you.

by bdalebs on Sep 3, 2008 4:30 PM EDT up reply actions

That's like blaming the deli number dispenser

at the market for whether the food is any good. You cannot give too much credit to the catcher for a no-hitter, and anyway, you can never prove a thing by this!

Hey look, I am not against Varitek for an reason other than he is now too old to do the job as well as it needs to be. This is the top level league (and potentially team), and only the top performers should be there and getting this kind of money. The Sox need to gently or otherwise get Varitek to step down, and either way,God forbid, not pay him a huge salary from now on!

by NG on Sep 4, 2008 9:26 AM EDT up reply actions

You do realize that the catcher has a bigger say in what pitchs are thrown and where they are thrown to than the pitcher, right?

The only thing the pitcher can do is shake off the catcher, but he can only do that once or twice before the catcher gets mad and will come out to the mound.

Don't question my choice of teams, or I will have to go all troll on you.

by bdalebs on Sep 4, 2008 4:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Agree to disagree

Like I said, you just cannot prove this to me. The pitcher actually makes the pitch, and during a no-hitter that’s what must be supurb for 9 innings!

by NG on Sep 4, 2008 7:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Easy to prove. Buch's no hitter last year was basically the same stuff he has been throwing this year.

The catcher can make a difference, and Tek has. This year, he has had to deal with more rookie pitchers, the media and fans on his back the entire year about his average, and the effects of getting old. I would sign him to a one year deal with a perpetual option like Wake’s contract. I don’t know if this is allowed, but they could also possibly work in a deal that he would become the catching coach at the end of his playing contract.

Don't question my choice of teams, or I will have to go all troll on you.

by bdalebs on Sep 4, 2008 9:05 PM EDT up reply actions

You know what

I sort of agree with you, people overrate the ‘game calling’ stuff on a catcher. But while Tek makes some mistakes in the game calling sometimes (too many FBs, every 0-2 count is high and away in some games), 4 no-hitters speak really loud.

Mother---- him and John Wayne!

Read my story on the main board.

As I said here, Varitek has batted .272 / .372 / .457 with 4 HR over the last 29 games, which is kinda awesome for him. He’s been significantly better, and doesn’t deserve to be crucified.

His hits are NOT in the clutch when really needed.

He consistently does NOt deliver in the clutch, which will come back to hurt this team. Varitek, Lugo and then Crisp (in that order) are similar in this respect, IMO

by NG on Sep 3, 2008 4:31 PM EDT up reply actions

He has a lot of important RBI's this year, from what I can remember.

WOW

Always nice to wake up see a w on the board, especially one like this. Dusty really wants that MVP. Right now I’d say Sizemore is the favourite, but you know with Cleveland sucking and all, that makes a big difference to voters. He needs to win the batting title I reckon and if we take over the Rays and he’s the key, then its his.
Thoughts?

And the guy who was turning Yankee Stadium into a comedy club during the HRD...

He seriously should’ve bunted in the second round.

Perhaps..

Those 100+ rbi’s will close to 40 hrs will help him. His team still needs to make the playoffs and that sub .300 average will hurt. Hey, I’m not saying he ain’t good, but that’s how the MVP voters will see it.
But a scrappy 5 foot 9, second baseman with a gaudy .330 average, .500 slg with 20 homers on a nationally recogized team sells a much better story. And the 95% success rate on stolen bases also plays real well. And the hitting 4th thing is getting heaps of airplay, plus the fact he’s just killed it in the 4th spot will help. I reckon unless the pale hose make the playoffs, Quentin won’t win it.

Seriously, how did Hamilton fall out of this race?

AARP-rod won on the same style Rangers team: not a winning team, but lots of offense.

Here ya go:

It was easier to root for them last night than it was the night before. Maybe it was because the Sox had already won… Or maybe I’m going over to the DARK SIDE!!! Ahhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!
[runs to local church, receives exorcism, suddenly rooting against the Yankees again, realizes that he is effectively rooting for the Rays, connects exorcism with the Devil Rays, runs to local bar, chugs a Sam Adams (/sarcasm), starts yelling at everybody in the bar wearing Rays/Yankees gear that their teams suck, runs out into street screaming “GO RED SOX!!!”

The Lord's Prayer is 66 words, the Gettysburg Address is 286 words, there are 1,322 words in the Declaration of Independence, but government regulations on the sale of cabbage total 26,911 words.

Perfect!!!!

I think my going over to the Dark Side comment might have cost us a karma-being-a-bitch win by the Rats over the MFY.

Great, a fan at Tropicana Field wearing a Yankees jersey was just clapping on a ground-rule double by Navarro.

At least some of them are wearing paperbags over their heads.
