Beckett has an oblique injury

Boston Herald Link

Apparently, Beckett suffered an oblique injury during his last bullpen session. The extent of the injury is unknown, but word is that he might not pitch again this season. The Red Sox are making an announcement after the Red Sox/Yankees game.

If true, this is terrible news. I really don't think the Sox can win a playoff series without Beckett. If he is indeed unable to pitch, the playoff rotation would be Lester/Matsuzaka/Wakefield/Byrd. Luckily, Lester will be able to pitch Game 1 on five days rest if needed.

UPDATE: Good news. Beckett indeed suffered a strained oblique, but it was not as severe as originally reported. He will be starting Game 3 of the ALDS. (Per Tito in the press conference)

According to Tito ...

Beckett will pitch Game 3. Lester will go in the opener.

Francona was confident the injury would not keep, Beckett, the reigning ACLS MVP, out of the ALDS altogether.

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

Also because we don't have to send Byrd out there

But I get that it would have been better to send Beckett on the road.

Just checked Beckett's 08 splits

He’s much worse at home. There’s no way to spin this positively.

I only hope that Beckett looks at the calendar, feels the chill in the air, rushes to the nearest phone booth, and dons the garb of Playoff Beckett, the Unhittable Wonder.

Disaster. Stop. OMG. Stop. Oh please. Stop.

This sucks. As Ecoli says, Becks has not been near as good at home. I was looking forward to Becks and Lester on the road (in either order) with Daisuke getting the first start at home. Personally, I’d have gone Lester-Becks-Daisuke just to make sure Becks’s second game (if necessary) would be on the road.

The good news is, even with 53 games of Mark Teixeira (.448 OBP), the Angels are 11th in the AL in .OBP and 10th in runs scored. The key is going to be the hitting vs. Lackey, Santana, and Saunders. We missed Santana this season (well, miss is a relative term), Lackey pitched awesome against us, and Saunders is left-handed.

At the very least, we should remember that Jon Lester is the tits and has been all season. A team that doesn’t take walks is a perfect opponent for Daisuke, assuming he, Tek, and John Farrell get together and concentrate on using that advantage. And, of course, we had home field last season and Becks’s dominance-extravaganza vs. the Halos occurred at Fenway.

Lester may be the tits

but we shouldn’t rub it in people’s faces. While it’s important to stay abreast of the situation, we have a responsibility not to milk it for all it’s worth. People have long mammaries, and this site could go belly up if we start sucking.

Ha

Remember when we were kids and we mixed sodas together and called them "suicides"? It was OK though, because Dr. Pepper was always there.

I always thought you were the mature one.

I always pegged bs.uf15bosox9bears23 and I as the crazy teens…. You still got your points across, though.

JD Drew told the team doctor he broke his leg in two places. The doctor told him to stop going to those places.

This is VERY bad news

We don’t even know – for sure – if Beckett is going to pitch game three. Francona was said to be almost so depressed about this he couldn’t speak, which tells you something. Lester has been great this year but come crunch-time, you want a proven player winner – the best ever, perhaps (with Schilling) starting Game One….AND ready for a Game Five, if necessary. Not now.

Guys – how much adversity can this team take?

This sucks.

Its better news than I expected

"You know," Girardi said, shrugging his shoulders, "it didn't work."

DICE-K is now starting in LAAA

Bit of a silver lining

This is fine with me

Dice-K does well on the road and he has pitched many big games in Halo stadium.

Home/Away Splits

08’ Home ERA: 3.34 Away ERA: 2.37
Career Home ERA: 4.10 Away ERA: 3.35

I might be wrong, but I think Dice-K hasn’t pitched any games at “Halo” stadium. He has only pitched against them twice once during this regular season and once during the postseason last year. Both, I believe were at home.

I was talking about road games in general this year. Somehow he performs more like a lefty at Fenway.

And not a Lester lefty.
