Red Sox clinch playoff berth

The Red Sox are in!

With a big 5-4 win over the Indians, the Sox are penciled in for October. Time to defend that World Series trophy. Every team will have to try and rip it out of the Sox's hands.

Go Sox!

AMAZING!

With all the shit the Sox had to put up with this year, from that stupid Japan trip to a ridiculous schedule with almost no days off to the Manny debacle and the injuries to Beckett, Schilling, Oritz, Drew, Lowell, , etc.., etc.

This is a team with TRUE GRIT!!!!

Hurrah!!!!

"You know," Girardi said, shrugging his shoulders, "it didn't work."

take it easy

for the rest of the season, and let everybody get their minds set on the playoffs. I think the Rays would pretty much have to lose the rest of their games for the Sox to catch them.

Let's hope Beckett, Lester, and Dice-K bring their A-games

against the Angels.

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

Beckett was in rare form after last night's game

his press conference was vintage Beckett; I think he will be pretty riled;

I am super excited! I hope the Sox keep their “thing” with LAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA going…maybe Dave Henderson will throw out the first pitch in a game

"You know," Girardi said, shrugging his shoulders, "it didn't work."

This game was a great victory.

Not a pretty one, but any win against a guy like Lee, who’s having the best year he ever will, is awesome.

Congratulations to the 2008 Red Sox, who weathered a plague of injuries almost as bad as 2006’s, and still clenched a playoff berths.

You mean sorta like when Beckett owned the Yankees in the World Series with the Marlins? LOL you guys lost to the Marlins in a World Series…how embarrassing for you.

Wildcard Wonders Nation

That’s what you should call yourselves. Is there any other team in this league that has benefited so greatly from sneaking in the back door. Yeah you have a few rings lately,…congrats. Great teams win divisions, great teams dominate. The Red Sox,………they back in! How many Divisions in the last decade. Kiss the ground the wild card walks on, because without it the Red Sox are same as the Twins. A pretty good team every year. When the Yankees and Blue Jays aren’t finishing ahead of you in the standings,…..then it’s the Tampa Bay Rays. You should be proud of yourselves for being the 3rd or 4th best team in the AL,……WOO HOO pop the champagne,…… “We’re number 4,….we’re number 4”

…..so what do you expect? Some class? Yeah, right.

Can’t rain on our parade! We’re in…..and you’re not.

It must really suck knowing the Hank S. is destroying your team before your very eyes and the Yankees chances of winning another World Series goes down every year D. Jeter gets closer to retirement.

We’re number 4 might not be the best chant, ill give you that, but its much better than:

“We have a 8am Tee Time!!!”

or

“We just got rolled in 4 games after having a 3-0 lead in the ALCS!!!”

Hey Louie, why dont you just hang back and watch Hank S. buy himself another 35+ pitcher who cannot throw strikes….

I truly hope Cashman is smart and takes the better job and goes to Seattle.

I’d love to see Cashman try to turn Seattle around. Or give New York City fits by steering the Phillies past the Mets on an annual basis.

2000

I guess you should hand back the 2000 World Series title when the Yankees were the 5th best team in the AL

The 90 win Indians squad didn’t qualify while the Yankees 87 win team did

2000… hmmm
Hasn’t my team won 2 World Series since then?

Oh well, Yankee fans have nothing else to cheer for this year

by SullyBaseball on Sep 24, 2008 3:33 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Umm.... I'm pretty sure we're best team in the AL...

Our Pythagorean Record: 94-63
Rays’ Pythagorean Record: 89-68
White Sox’ Pythagorean Record: 86-70
Twins’ Pythagorean Record: 87-70
Angels: Pythagorean Record: 86-71

Oh, and just for laughs: MFY’s Pythagorean Record: 83-74

Oh, and I feel dirty...

I was born towards the beginning of the last season the MFY didn’t get into the playoffs…

I thought great teams won World Series.

Re:Wildcard Wonders Nation

Obviously a Pinhead Alley poster. Hey, Louie-from 2002-present the Sox have averaged 94 wins. From 1995-2001 the MFY averaged a shade under 96, including the anomalous 114 win 1998 season. Hardly a “good team” like the Twins. By your reasoning we should eliminate the ’77 and 2000 Yanks as world champs, since they had a worse record than other division winners, and by pre-1969 rules would not have made the post season. Get over the fact that we have a chance to win our third WS in 5 years, and your titles are a distant memory.

Gammons

Said last night that the Sox would concede the AL-East to the Rays and get set up for the Angels:

Game 1 – Beckett v. Lackey

Game 2 – Lester v. Santana

Game 3 – Dice-K v. Saunders

The Angels have everything they have ever claimed was against them in prior playoff series, home field, their rotation set up, new power hitter in the middle to protect Vlady, new CF to replace G. Anderson’s poor defense.

They have no excuses this time.

That said….Sox in 3 =)

by SoxAcumen on Sep 24, 2008 2:52 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

weird

Given that Lester is a much better pitcher at Fenway, and Dice-K is better on the road, why are the Sox setting up the rotation to do the opposite?

I've always thought that any year the Yankees

don’t buy themselves another championship, it’s a VERY GOOD year regardless of who wins.

Obviously, the best, however, is when the Red Sox take it all. Oh, man, would Yankee fans kill themselves if that happened again this year!

by ccthemovieman on Sep 24, 2008 4:11 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

True

But think how uneventful the grand opening of the new Yankee Stadium would be with the Sox having won 2 World Series in a row…

Would anyone care about the new ball park in the Bronx?

probably not.
