Open Thread: Wild Card Clinch? Clevelands @ Red Sox.

Cleveland Indians at Boston Red Sox, Sep 22, 2008 7:05 PM EDT

W-L ERA WHIP K BB
2008 - Zach Jackson 0-3 6.48 1.48 22 6

W-L ERA WHIP K BB
2008 - Josh Beckett 12-9 3.96 1.18 166 33

Amidst a busy schedule of stealing quite generic nicknames, the Sox take on the Clevelands tonight at Fenway Park with a chance to seal up a spot in the 2008 postseason. There's only one October, just like last year.

You can have your Hanley Ramirez, Freddy Sanchez, Carlos Pena, Brandon Moss, David Murphy -regrets. The Clevelands have a catcher whose hitting line in 107 games this season is .268/.346/.534, and it ain't Victor Martinez.

Despite a recent hot streak, still not loving Ells in the leadoff spot. The rest of the lineup, however, is just about exactly as it should look given the individuals playing tonight. Jason Bay returns from maternity leave. I might've given Bailey a shot a little higher in the order, but then he might've just reached base and not been knocked in by Kotsay or 'Tek, so maybe it all works out. Zach Jackson is LH, which is good news for 'Tek, as he can hit from the side of the plate that he can still hit from (.875 OPS v.  LHPs this season from the right side). Go Sox. Clinch. Down with the Rays. All that good stuff.

Saw a suggestion on MLBTR of a Lugo for Dontrelle trade just about straight-up with the Tigers. Any thoughts?

No thanks.

Remember when we were kids and we mixed sodas together and called them "suicides"? It was OK though, because Dr. Pepper was always there.

Agreed with both of you guys.

I think Dontrelle is done. Didn’t know if anyone would come up with an argument for taking him on.

If you knew in 1985 or early 1986 that,

Bill Buckner would have made that 1986 World Series Game 6 error, and he (Buchner) was showing as many signs of failure as Lugo, would you have taken action then to get rid of the guy??

by NG on Sep 22, 2008 6:57 PM EDT up reply actions

I'd trust that Lugo isn't going to be in any important games late when

the game is tied or there is a small lead and a need for steady defense.

by Allen Chace on Sep 22, 2008 6:58 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't think Tito

Has shown any tendency towards the idea that he’ll just bench Lowrie when/if Lugo comes back (which probably won’t be until 2009 Spring Training anywya).

"Are you a real doctor, or a doctor like Dr. Pepper is a doctor?"

by Allen Chace on Sep 22, 2008 7:01 PM EDT up reply actions

And the only way the Sox NEED to dump Lugo

Is if he shows a clear unwillingness to try a super-utility and PR role next season. If that’s the case, then yes, we’ll have to dump him and either eat some cash or take back a bad contract (Dontrelle Willis is a decent example) ourselves.

True. But he's a decent lefty pitcher.

In Fenway, that equals runs.

Next topic.

Anyone think the Clevelands would, under any circumstances, listen to offers on Shoppach?

"Are you a real doctor, or a doctor like Dr. Pepper is a doctor?"

by Allen Chace on Sep 22, 2008 7:04 PM EDT reply actions

What are you offering?

And, more importantly, what do think the Sox’ FO thinks Shoppach’s value is?

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

by Drugs Delaney on Sep 22, 2008 7:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, I mean.

He’s a 28 year old catcher who has proven (more so than any other trade candidates talked about to take over for ‘Tek) that he can hit big-league pitching, knows the Sox’s system and may still have familiarity with some of our pitchers.

And then we’ve gotta think about what Cleveland might be convinced to want more than said 28 year old good-hitting catcher. High-ceiling OF? SP? And then we can’t even be sure Shoppach would really be worth one of those things.

by Drugs Delaney on Sep 22, 2008 7:12 PM EDT up reply actions

Enh.

Tough, though that’s the kind of price we’ve been talking about with Teagarden and co. Shoppach is older, but is less of a performance risk?

"Are you a real doctor, or a doctor like Dr. Pepper is a doctor?"

by Allen Chace on Sep 22, 2008 7:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Teagarden probably has a higher ceiling

But Shoppach can be an everyday catcher now. Any catcher will cost the Sox a lot.

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

by Drugs Delaney on Sep 22, 2008 7:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Wonder if the Sox would prefer the lower-risk.

If the Clevelands would part with Shoppach, then we could still trade him in a couple years IF Exposito moves quickly or the offense is good enough to carry what will seemingly be the mediocre bat (but quite potent glove) of Mark Wagner.

Yes he is sucking it tonight!

The problem that would make him a momentum sucker of the order of a Lugo or Crisp is if he consistently sucks away the momentum. So far, he has not, thankfully!

You know

When are you gonna come down
When are you going to land
I should have stayed on the farm
I should have listened to my old man

You know you can’t hold me forever
I didn’t sign up with you
I’m not a present for your friends to open
This boy’s too young to be singing the blues

So goodbye yellow brick road
Where the dogs of society howl
You can’t plant me in your penthouse
I’m going back to my plough

Back to the howling old owl in the woods
Hunting the horny back toad
Oh I’ve finally decided my future lies
Beyond the yellow brick road

What do you think you’ll do then
I bet that’ll shoot down your plane
It’ll take you a couple of vodka and tonics
To set you on your feet again

Maybe you’ll get a replacement
There’s plenty like me to be found
Mongrels who ain’t got a penny
Sniffing for tidbits like you on the ground
