GT: SOX @ Rays, Game 1

(Sports Network) - First place in the AL East will be on the line this evening when the Tampa Bay Rays host the Boston Red Sox in the first of three critical matchups at Tropicana Field. Thanks to two dramatic wins at Fenway Park last week, Tampa Bay has won eight of the 15 matchups between the division rivals this season and comes into tonight's opener clinging to a one-game lead in the division. However, the Rays have won all six games played between the two in St. Petersburg. That trend could continue tonight, as the Rays will hand the ball to left- hander Scott Kazmir, who is 3-0 over his last five starts, surrendering two runs or less in four of those outings. Kazmir did not get a decision against the Red Sox on Tuesday, as he allowed a pair of runs and five hits in six innings of his team's 5-4 win. Kazmir, who is 11-6 with a 2.99 ERA this season, is 6-6 lifetime against Boston with a 3.02 ERA in 20 starts. The Red Sox will counter with Japanese right-hander Daisuke Matsuzaka, who is 16-2 with a 2.97 earned run average. Matsuzaka opposed Kazmir without getting a decision last week, but did not make it past the fifth inning, as he yielded three runs and eight hits in five innings. Matsuzaka has faced the Rays seven times and is 1-3 with a 3.98 ERA. Boston bounced back from losing two of three to the Rays last week by taking three of four from the Toronto Blue Jays, including Sunday's 4-3 win in the series finale. Coco Crisp knocked in a pair of runs and Jon Lester hurled eight strong innings to lead the way for the Red Sox. David Ortiz and Kevin Youkilis also drove in runs in the win. Lester (15-5) allowed four hits and one run with six strikeouts and two walks. Jonathan Papelbon survived a rocky ninth to record his 38th save. While Boston was taking care of business against the Jays, Tampa lost two of three to the Yankees, including an 8-4 setback on Sunday in the Bronx. Fernando Perez had a three-run homer for the Rays, while Edwin Jackson (11-11) lasted just two innings, allowing six runs on six hits en route to the loss. Tampa has now lost six of its last nine games.

OMFG...

The Rays announcers are pretty much already predicting a sweep, or at least a big win tonight.

Remember when we were kids and we mixed sodas together and called them "suicides"? It was OK though, because Dr. Pepper was always there.

Is Kazmir growing a playoff beard?

I was going to, but I got in trouble for it. It looked kinda crappy in some places. Damn hormones, work properly!

Dice-K up vs. Pena.

Let’s try to avoid having Pena, Longoria, and Floyd up all in one inning. That would help keep their runs produced down.

Not completely true.

The Yankees had Big Brown on their roster for a while. They wanted him because he had the reputation of being a horse. However, he went down with injury. But he’s not a complete loss for them. I hear Cashman wants to put him out to stud, see if they can mate him with A-Rod to create the greatest athlete ever…

Run COCO, RUN!!!!!!!!!!!

Remember when we were kids and we mixed sodas together and called them "suicides"? It was OK though, because Dr. Pepper was always there.

8 more runs and the lead is Gagne-proof

So...

Should I wear the World Series Champs shirt from last year tomorrow? Or maybe just a generic Sox shirt…

No... I don't permanently screw with history.

Just a piece of masking tape with an 8 on it.

Good Night to both of you

but I’m staying until the end..you know, like Sandy Kazmir posted to “represent”

"You know," Girardi said, shrugging his shoulders, "it didn't work."

'Sup all

I pulled a MassGal and just got back from class (Probate). Predictably, the Red Sox showed more power tonight than all week. On the plus side, there’s almost half a game left to watch…

Keeps Coco from reaching base five times.

I could've sworn that was Mike Timlin pitching in the sixth.

There was the hit, the two-run home-run, everything.

Chris Smith is just warming the crowd up

for Mike Timlin. Another inning, another 2-run homer. This is ridiculous.

by 0157H7 on Sep 15, 2008 9:57 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

At least Chris Smith can throw pitches in the dirt

for called strikes. Timlin can’t do that.

I hope Timlin realizes he should hang it up

I always liked him but its time to go now

So now Jeff Bailey is PH for Youk.

Why didn’t Terry just move Youk to 3B, and Bailey to 1st? Is Cito Gaston’s obsessive pinch-hitting becoming contagious?

by 0157H7 on Sep 15, 2008 10:03 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

He probably wants to rest his players

including Youk.

by Drugs Delaney on Sep 15, 2008 10:04 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I can understand resting players.

And giving playing time to backups. But I don’t get Cash at 3B?

Correction

*But I don’t get Cash at 3B… that’s just weird.

by Drugs Delaney on Sep 15, 2008 10:07 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Probably.

On the other hand, seeing balls other than knucklers must be fun for Cash.

by 0157H7 on Sep 15, 2008 10:09 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

speaking of Cito Gaston

I understood his" pitch on short days rest" decision because mathematically the Jays were/are still in it but at the same time I thought. “really, three days rest?”

"You know," Girardi said, shrugging his shoulders, "it didn't work."

( Joe Girardi on pitching to Manny Ramirez with first base open)

by MassGal on Sep 15, 2008 10:06 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Yeah.

That worked out SO well for the Yankees in the 2007 playoffs. Short rest for Halladay is one thing, but for all three, that’s inexcusable.

Downplaying momentum is like denying

that the force of gravity exists. Not a very realistic thing to do, especially in light of the fashion in which the Sox won the actual World Series in 2007 and 2004. Talk about real examples of unstoppable momentum.

" And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars:
And she being with child cried, travailing in birth, and pained to be delivered.
And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads.
And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth: and the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born.
And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and to his throne. And his name was Timlin. And he was bad."
