It took him 14 innings to get on base
I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

Not a leadoff hitter.
And while neither are really power hitters, I hate our two hitters with probably the least easily discernible weaknesses (DP, Lowrie) being broken up in the order by more than one hitter.

Jason Bartlett has some range.

If no one PHs for Cora I'll kill everyone
So let’s just hope the game doesn’t go there. :)

We've got more bad relievers, I think
Pauley, Hansack, Smith, Timlin… You name it… :)

Talent
Hansack > Pauley
I actually wouldn’t mind seeing Hansack get some work as a RP, just to see if there’s anything there.

Ball 1
Bay would have swung over that pitch
I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.
Wow.
I’m at a loss for words. Not sure which was a harder loss, last night’s game or tonight’s.
Sutcliffe: no.
Pena let go by the Red Sox, should be sweet to show them what they’re missing…
Pena didn’t show much when with the organization, as hard as I’m sure he worked.
"Are you a real doctor, or a doctor like Dr. Pepper is a doctor?"
Timlin sucked
But this loss is on the offense. The Sox had a ton of chances to put this game away before the 14th.
I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.
Agreed

The blown call back in the 9th really stings.
I hope they school that prick on what a tie at the plate means.
Ray's pitching?
The last two games point out again that good pitching beats good hitting most times. The Red Sox are an above average hitting team, but the Rays pretty much shut them down the last 2 nights, especially last night. My “momentum sucking theory” will have to be explained/modified to account for the effect of great pitching, For example, if a team removes all its Lugos (aka, known individual momentum suckers), is that any guarantee that the team will not be deprived of momentum in any game due to great opposing pitching. It is just that when some hitters consistently hit in a given game, but other players consistently make outs and kill inning rallies that you get the individual momentum sucking effect. Last night, all hitters were subdued almost equally by Rays pitching, and that is both different from the momentum sucker idea that I have been expressing, and it is also a tribute to the Rays pitching staff. KUDOs to them!
i have no idea what that means
“good pitching beats good hitting”
A team with great pitching and no hitting will fare no better than a team with great hitting and no pitching.
You really do need both.
It really is just as important to do well on offense as it is to do well on defense.
Shades of gray are tought to understand sometimes??

Well, that sucked.
Lester helped us win the first one, but Paps couldn’t figure out the concept of “Low Strike”, and Timlin was… Timlin.
I wouldn’t have minded if we had ended up 0.5 GB at the end of this series, because then we could overtake the lead in one series just by winning that series. Now we will have to sweep them next week to overtake them, unless the MFY decide to help us.
At this point, I have to believe the MFY fans are probably cheering for the Rays so that we don’t win the division. We’ve got to replace all of the support the MFY lost for the next few nights.
I feel dirty for saying it, but Go Yank-e-e-e-s… (God, I feel like I need a pressure washing)
Remember when we were kids and we mixed sodas together and called them "suicides"? It was OK though, because Dr. Pepper was always there.
Paps was pitching on his third consecutive day
on Tuesday. He was tired.
As for the MFY, who cares what they do or think? They are in 4th place in the division and 4th place in the Wild Card chase.
They play the Rays tomorrow, i think.
Longoria is back : (
If Paps is tired from pitching on three consecutive days, then he would’ve sucked as a starter. That and the whole “If I give up two hits in the inning, I have to get popups from everyone else” thing.
He needs to be used regurally, not have a whole week off and then a spurt of games.
Remember when we were kids and we mixed sodas together and called them "suicides"? It was OK though, because Dr. Pepper was always there.
Timlin Has Done It All And He Can Do More
Give Mike TImlin A Break. I was watching the game yesterday and they (the commentators) were saying how he has 4 world series rings and had just appeared in his 1050th game. Ok, he blew last night, that wasn’t so nice, but I remember the countless Timlin made an impact in his own quiet way. I wouldn’t give up on Timlin just yet, I think he should stay in that Sox lineup 100%.
Forever Red Sox, screw all those pink-hatted babes, 'got no family, 'got no friends, 'got no life--RED SOX I LIVE FOR THIS.
Why would that warrant a break? Because he WAS good? I like Timlin, but he’s done as a Major Leaguer. He can still throw BP to them, but not much more.
That can be said of other on the team, at least soon anyway!
Varitek for sure NOW!
Wakefield for sure NOW!
Big Papi maybe Now
Lowell sooner than later
by NG on Sep 11, 2008 7:00 PM EDT up reply actions
Wow. You are the most negative fan I’ve ever met. I am SURE the Yankees, Rays and Blue Jays would all happily take Wakefield, Papi, and Lowell off our hands along with their contracts.
Not Wakefield! Never.
Lowell and Papi are not done yet, as I tried to indicate, but signs are not good that time will be kind to them. Varitek is through now, and few if any will take him for any big numbers.
by NG on Sep 11, 2008 7:07 PM EDT up reply actions
I feel like Papi will bounce back quick next season. Wrist injuries are known to be hell for power hitters.
Lowell I agree to some extent, but still feel he’s more useful than most other third basemen in the league.
Wakefield is having a hell of a season. He hasn’t pitched this well since 2002, and up until his last start he was actually consistent. His record is almost completely at the fault of the offense and Terry Francona.
If I was a manager and wanted consistency
and a measure of predictablitiy, the last thing I would seek out is a knuckleball pitcher. I am sick of holding my breath every time Wakefiedl pitches, and in critical situations, it is baseball suicide to pitch him, IMHO! He is the very definition of chaos!
by NG on Sep 11, 2008 9:54 PM EDT up reply actions
Consistency?
He’s been league average or better for eight years in a row, which given our offense, means he consistently puts us in a position to win. And he only costs $4 million, well below the going rate for a LAIM. And he’s an all-around class act.
Chaos can be a good thing, especially when the hitter is trying to guess what the ball will do next.
Manny ain't the only bad man.
League average for champions
is not good enough. Also his lack of predicability in control of his knuckleball and how hard he will be hit makes him too big a risk. He will most ALWAYS allow 4 or so runs even on a decent outing, so In order to win with him pitching, an offensively strong game is a must. If the opposing team just pitches an above average pitcher, we stand a better than average chance of losing!
by NG on Sep 12, 2008 7:40 AM EDT up reply actions
4 runs isn't "strong"
For the Sox, 4 runs is at least a run below average.
Manny ain't the only bad man.
league average is awesome at Wakefield's price tag
and he’s your #4.

Don't mind, man
NG just flat out hates Wakefield, no matter how many reasons point the other way. Yeah, I know, I don’t get it as well. :)

Couple things.
1) Timlin is a reliever, so he’s in the pen, not the lineup. Which is a good thing, because Timlin at this age can’t hit.
2) As a reliever, Timlin can’t pitch well reliably. He needs about 5+ runs to be a safe choice.
