If I was Bay, I’d sue Tito for batting Kotsay ahead of me.

Me too

Bowden looks sharp. He left too curves too high in the zone, but still didn’t get hit.

And Bowden get his first major league strikeout

Looks like he’s relying mainly on the fastball today, but the curve’s looked pretty good too

I'm still amazed

That the Sox are able to put guys in their lineup and have them produce. The Sox have a hell of a lot of depth in their system.

I don't see the point of Cora on the team

I know he’s a “veteran presence in the clubhouse”, but we’ve got a shorstop in double A who’s as good defensively as Alex Gonzalez in his prime, and that’s WAY better than Cora.

by aspeninthewindow on Aug 30, 2008 7:49 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Agreed

I’m not sure if Diaz bat is better than Cora, but he’s a very nice fielder. What do you make of Navarro? His numbers are very good, he has big power for a SS, and is also a very nice fielder. Think he’ll be a trade chip at some point?

It's the same old story. Boy finds girl, boy loses girl, girl finds boy, boy forgets girl, boy remembers girl, girls dies in a tragic blimp accident over the Orange Bowl on New Year's Day.

by MerryGoByeBye on Aug 30, 2008 7:52 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I really can't tell with Navarro

I think his numbers are a little inflated with the Lancaster effect, but he’s got a quality glove and can hit REAL well. He’s also like Lowrie where he can play 2nd, 3rd, or short. If he continues hitting the way he’s been, he could definitely be used as trade bait in a couple of years. It really depends on the situation we’re going to be in. He’s definitely a quality prospect though, and the Sox have some other real good infield prospects in the minors, so trading him wouldn’t hurt the system much.

by aspeninthewindow on Aug 30, 2008 7:56 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I don't think the Sox have a good 3B prospect in the system

Soxprospects has Michael Almanzar high in the list, but he just doesn’t have the numbers. Middlebrooks is okay. We have Tejeda, Navarro and Diaz, so I guess at least one of them can play 3B. And, of course, there’s Lars. I just can’t wait to see Lars on the bigs. Do you think we’ll move Youk up to third and put him in Lowell’s spot, or will Lars replace Papi?

Oh, and Reddick. I’m just very gay for that swing. :)

It's the same old story. Boy finds girl, boy loses girl, girl finds boy, boy forgets girl, boy remembers girl, girls dies in a tragic blimp accident over the Orange Bowl on New Year's Day.

by MerryGoByeBye on Aug 30, 2008 8:05 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

What you forget about with Almanzar

Is that he’s 17 in A ball. There’s a reason he’s struggling, he’s one of the only players in the history of baseball to be 17 and be playing in A ball. He’s got CRAZY potential (Like a not fat Miguel Cabrera) though, so we’ll have to wait with him. As far as Youk and Lars go, the Sox are going to have to make a decision after the 2010 season. Both Youk and Lowell will be free agents, so the Sox could just go after a big name free agent third basemen or resign Youk. I think Lars will become the everyday first baseman for the Sox from the 2010 season, on, somehow. I’m guessing we might trade Lowell sometime in the future, then have a Youk at 3rd, Lars at 1st lineup in 2010, then we’ll go from there. But to a 2010 lineup of Ellsbury, Pedroia, Ortiz, Lars, Youkilis, J.D. Drew, Lowrie, Reddick, and (insert any catcher besides Varitek here) makes my mouth water just thinking about.

by aspeninthewindow on Aug 30, 2008 8:13 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Almanzar is 17?

Goddamn, I didn’t notice that. I knew he was young, I just missed how young. Yeah, I heard a lot about his potential. But what I meant is that, while he may end up being special, he’s still far away from it.

And about the line-up, you’re very much right on. That will be awesome if all these guys are still around 2 years from now. Do you think Exposito will be our catcher, or will the Sox trade for someone? I know his numbers are under the Lancaster effect, but I heard a lot about his potential.

Mother---- him and John Wayne!

by MerryGoByeBye on Aug 30, 2008 8:49 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Expo's got tons of potential

His defensive tools are top notch, he’s got a cannon arm, and he can call a game as good as any catcher in the league. His offense was where he struggled before, but it seems like he’s for real. He posted almost the exact same OPS in Lancaster as he put up in Greenville, so I think that he’s got real good potential to be our starting catcher in 2010. The problem is, he’s still so far away it’s hard to tell, just like with Almanzar.

by aspeninthewindow on Aug 30, 2008 10:24 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

It might be tough to jump through AA and AAA next season to earn the starting role in 2010.

Manny ain't the only bad man.

by tommy.otm on Aug 31, 2008 12:01 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Sorry

I meant 2011, but if he keeps developing both defensively and offensively, he could easily see either a mid-season or September call-up in 2010.

by aspeninthewindow on Aug 31, 2008 8:08 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah

I wanted to trade for a young catcher, but then I found more about Exposito. His OBP is sort of low, but then again he’s young and is a catcher. I say we should give him a spin in Portland next season, and then see if we really need trading for a catcher.

The funny thing is that, while the Sox have a shitload of young pitchers, we really don’t have anyone other than the ones who already started at Boston so far (Lester, Buch, Masterson and Bowden). I guess I’m really spoiled, but when I look at the pitchers in the minors, I only see Bard, Price, Fife, Mills, Kris Johnson and Weiland as potentially good (not great) pitchers at ML level (and half of these guys were drafted this year). Do you think I’m worried over nothing?

Mother---- him and John Wayne!

Others

Dustin Richardson, Nick Hagadone. Felix Doubront, Caleb Clay, Casey Kelly will most likely be moved to SP eventually.

Doubront is a particular favorite of mine.

Hagadone

Forgot about him, I think he’ll be special. I really don’t know why I like Caleb Clay, who I also forgot. I’m not big on Richardson and Doubront.

I don’t think it’s something to be worried about, but I’m spoiled by our great pitching prospects who already came up and pitched big in the MLB, and I just want more of them. :)

I really like both Price and Weiland

And they both have had great success and both have good stuff, but it’s so tough to figure out if a pitcher is successful based on what they did in Lowell. The only pitcher I remember who I could tell was going to be good by their Lowell stats was Masterson, because he had an outrageous GB% of something like 75%. I’m excited about what happens in the future with our guys. A lot of them have a bunch of potential. One guy I really like is Stolmy Pimentel, I think he could end up pitching real well for us in a couple years. I’m also a big Casey Kelly fan just because he’s already a really advanced pitcher, with command of 3 pitches that all look like they could plus pitches. It looks like he could go through the system pretty fast. I am kind of worried about our lack of pitching depth at AA-AAA, though. Remember though, at the majors we’ll have Beckett, Matsuzaka, Lester, Buchholz, Masterson, and Bowden, not to mention Wake and possibly a free agent that we could sign. While you can never have enough pitching, I think with these 7 starters we could be all set for the near future.

The white sox announcers

are the most unprofessional i’ve ever heard/seen. They get so sour when a pitch is called outside the zone, but then they cry when the same pitch is called for a ball against their team…. I’ve never seen 2 more biased announcers in any sport, ever. They barely even give opposing players props after good plays are made, they make me sick.

by HanleysHitters on Aug 30, 2008 7:49 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

its so bad that no matter what team is playing the white sox I pray they pound them into the dirt so I can hear the announcers console eachother

That's a reason why I love Don and Jerry

Though they’re a little biased, they admit it if a play goes against the other team.

Damn it

5-2. Bowden’s looked real good tonight except for a couple of pitches. That triple really hurt him though. A triple’s almost always a guaranteed run.

Goodness Gracious

Has it now been 8 straight at bats that Pedroia’s reached base?

by aspeninthewindow on Aug 30, 2008 8:00 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

His line in August

.355/.402/.626

And that’s not even including tonight. I don’t care what Youk has done, Pedroia has got to be considered the MVP of this team this year

Oh Definitely

But I’m hoping Grady Sizemore wins the award this year. He’s been friggin AMAZING, I don’t care about his batting average.

by aspeninthewindow on Aug 30, 2008 8:15 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

MVP will come from a playoff contender.

That’s standard. I’d expect Quentin to be the leader.

by 0157H7 on Aug 30, 2008 8:17 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I know it will

But how can you ignore a guy with a 1.000+ OPS and 31 stolen bases? It just seems unfair to me. It’s not Sizemore’s fault the Indians suck.

Bowden reminding me Jon Lester when he first came up.

Of course, they’re completely different pitchers, but to see his composure on the mound is wonderful to see after watching Buchholz suck up the joint for what seemed like forever.

by aspeninthewindow on Aug 30, 2008 8:17 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Bowden seems more like Masterson in composure.

Lester was prone to completely losing his command of the strike zone, looking very vulnerable while doing it.

I don’t know about the rest of you, but I don’t know if Bowden is ready for the show yet. His line isn’t bad, but he’s allowing way too many DEEP fly balls and not really controlling the at bats.

I agree.

He showed some nice stuff, but he was flirting with danger in almost every inning. The last two AB of Quentin and Dye resulted in towering flyballs that they got under and couldn’t hit out. He was being hit hard.

I liked how he used his breaking pitches more as the ChiSox started pounding his FB.

The above reasons

And also, many MLB managers like for the middle of their order to alternate handedness. Tonight’s whole was L-S-L-R-L-R-S-R-L.

Wouldn’t seem so strange, I imagine, if it were someone with (and yes, 2 2Bs and he’s done a great job since coming over here) more power than Mark Kotsay.
