Red Sox @ Yankees, Game 3 Thread

It's afternoon baseball at Yankee stadium, as the Red Sox try to sweep the Yankees. Lester is on the mound against Mussina.

Lineups:

RED SOX

1. Jacoby Ellsbury, CF
2. Dustin Pedroia, 2B
3. David Ortiz, DH
4. Kevin Youkilis, 1B
5. Jason Bay, LF
6. Mark Kotsay, RF
7. Jed Lowrie, 3B
8. Alex Cora, SS
9. Jason Varitek, C

YANKEES

1. Johnny Damon, CF
2. Derek Jeter, SS
3. Bobby Abreu, RF
4. Alex Rodriguez, 3B
5. Xavier Nady, LF
6. Robinson Cano, 2B
7. Hideki Matsui, DH
8. Cody Ransom, 1B
9. Jose Molina,C

Today marks the debut of Mark Kotsay in a Sox uniform. Ellsbury has CF, and Coco has the bench. Interestingly, Kotsay is batting ahead of Lowrie. Meanwhile, the Yankees have Cody Ransom at 1B, who I've never heard of. Game's starting so comment away!

Afternoon All

Go Sox!!

"You know," Girardi said, shrugging his shoulders, "it didn't work."

Kotsay catches Damon's fly ball.

Lester worked back to 3-2 after falling behind 3-0.

I am at work

listening to Castiglione get SUPER excited about Jeter’s base hit

"You know," Girardi said, shrugging his shoulders, "it didn't work."

Damn

Anyone else noticing a 95 MPH fastball from Lester? Has it been like this all year?

by Charger567 on Aug 28, 2008 1:25 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

No.

He’s throwing a bit harder today.

Pavano is on waivers per Castiglione

wonder where he goes…wouldn’t it be great if he had a huge comeback?

"You know," Girardi said, shrugging his shoulders, "it didn't work."

Lester fights out of an early jam.

His 4-seam fastball is looking great, hitting 95 with regularity (usually it sits at 92, 93). And he threw a good curve to strike out A-Rod.

Yawn

I hate these early games…

Kotsay doubles!

He hits well off Mussina in his career.

Kotsay delivers!!!

I’ve liked the dude since he was with the A’s. I’m glad we got him.

Cody Ransom

Probably nothing to be worried about. Age 32, career .240 minor league hitter with good pop (20+ home runs with Scranton Wilkes Barre).

Better inning from Lester

still a lot of deep counts. I’d like to see him get some quick ground ball outs, so he can go deeper into the game.

trivia Q&A for first game at the new yankees stadium

What Red Sox had the team’s first hit in the team’s last game at the old Yankee Stadium?

Mark Kotsay is not the answer that’ll come to the casual fan.

by argo0 on Aug 28, 2008 1:53 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Red Sox offense looking helpless.

Ellsbury K’s on three straight pitches. Pedroia pops up. Will we ever score some runs off Mussina?

Abreu screws up hit and run

Jeter caught in No Man’s Land and gunned down.

I'm not sure

But running on Molina is not very smart.

and they score against Mussina. Figures.

Great job by Lester to get out of this one

I have to leave now. Hope the pen keep the lead on this one. See you guys later. Go Sox!

interesting discussion on the radio

who would be the #2 playoff starter : Lester or Dice K ( if Sox make it of course)

"You know," Girardi said, shrugging his shoulders, "it didn't work."

by MassGal on Aug 28, 2008 3:12 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

depends where it is

Lester’s Home/Away splits are more extreme than Dice-Ks. I would want him pitching at Fenway.

At Fenway:
Lester 7-1 2.93 ERA
Dice-K 8-2 3.28 ERA

On road:
Dice-K 7-0 2.67 ERA
Lester 5-4 4.11 ERA

Must be the stash

Giambi hits a 2 run shot to center off Okajima. One of those goes to lester… what a waste of a great outing by Lester. Varitek had a chance to end the inning on the hitter before that but he couldn’t hold on to a foul tip from Ransom

hits a 2 run shot to center off Okajima.

Haven’t we been here before quite a few times this year?

by NG on Aug 28, 2008 3:46 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Oki's been better recently

sad to see the lead blown so quickly with 2 outs

by RickD on Aug 28, 2008 3:52 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

In such an important game,

why leave Masterson in the pen unitl it’s too late. Francona should have brought him in right away, IMO! This was not the time to have a rehab experiment with Okajima!

by NG on Aug 28, 2008 4:06 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

bummed that Oki gave up that HR to Giambi

Lester pitched great

Oki sucks and has all year

Feel bad for Lester, who deserved a victory. Well, hopefully a better reliever will get the win for us.

2 outta 3 indeed

Giambi finished what he started. Rivera takes the W, Masterson on the hook for the loss. Needless to say next series coming up against the White Sox pretty huge for both teams.

"Needless to say"

but ya said it anyway…

I knew someone who thought the saying was “needles to say”…no idea how or why he came up with that.

anyway…hope MN loses

bad day for the bullpen

Don’t like it. Don’t like it at all.

Well, September’s schedule favors the Sox. They have a nice home/road advantage, as opposed to the Rays and Yankees. Haven’t looked at the Twins and White Sox, but they must play each other, right?

by RickD on Aug 28, 2008 5:03 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yep

it was on at like 4:00 am here, sorry I missed it. A tough loss and me probably moreso then most, absolutely cringes when the pen f*cks it up. To think that effing juicer got us twice today, damn I hate that piece of sh*t. Sorry, I just really have this thing against Giambi. I don’t actually mind(well I do, just less so) when we get beaten by Matsui or Cano, but Giambi and Jeter just shit me.
Yes 2 out of 3 isn’t bad, but really we should’ve swept this series as NY is just futility personified right now. There batting is out of sync and their pitching is woeful.
Our guys on the other hand are looking sweet and hello 20 of next 29 games at home(or there abouts)

by sydneysox on Aug 28, 2008 7:07 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

And hopefully:

2 out of 3 after that, 2 out of 4 after that, and another 2 out of 4 after that!

Don't question my choice of teams, or I will have to go all troll on you.

We can take this loss....but not the loss of Beckett

That’’s the real bad news of the day, not today’s game. Man, if he goes down for the rest of the year that would be the last straw. I mean, how much adversity can one team take in one season? Let’s hope the news is good on Josh.

by ccthemovieman on Aug 28, 2008 9:40 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Crap

Bad news about Beckett, and we lost the game. I shouldn’t have left home, maybe things would have gone different. :)
