GT: Sox at MFY, Game 1+2
Wake vs. Pettitte
(Sports Network) - The Boston Red Sox make what in all likelihood will be their final visit to the current Yankee Stadium this evening, as they kick off a critical three-game series with the New York Yankees in the Bronx. Boston enters this series trailing the Tampa Bay Rays by 4 1/2 in the AL East, but hold a 1 1/2-game edge on the Minnesota Twins in the wild card. New York, meanwhile, is 9 1/2 games back of the Rays and five behind the Red Sox. The Red Sox took two of three over the weekend from the Toronto Blue Jays, including a 6-5 win in 11 innings on Sunday. Jed Lowrie's solo homer was the difference in that one, while Jonathan Papelbon (5-3) tossed two innings of shutout relief to get the win. Manny Delcarmen took Papelbon's usual spot as the closer and picked up his first save of the season. Dustin Pedroia and Coco Crisp also homered for the Red Sox, who have won four of six. Boston will have knuckleballer Tim Wakefield on the hill this evening for the first time since August 6. The righty, who has been on the disabled list with tightness in his right shoulder, is 7-8 on the year with a 3.67 earned run average. Wakefield is 9-17 lifetime against the Yankees with a 5.14 ERA in 47 games, 30 of which have been starts. New York will pin its hopes on lefty Andy Pettitte, who is 13-9 with a 4.17 ERA this season. Pettitte won for the first time in five starts on Wednesday in Toronto, as he allowed a run and five hits in seven innings. Pettitte defeated the Red Sox the last time he faced them and is 16-7 in his career against them with a 3.54 ERA in 31 games (29 starts). New York, of course, will have to finish strong if it plans on keeping its streak of 13 straight playoff appearances intact. The Yankees helped themselves a little over the weekend, sweeping the lowly Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards, culminating with an 8-7 win on Sunday. Robinson Cano went 4-for-5, and hit the go-ahead homer in the seventh inning to lift the Yanks to the win in the finale, as they won for the fourth time in five tries and completed a six-game road trip at 4-2. Starter Darrell Rasner did not factor into the decision as he was touched for five runs -- three earned -- on eight hits in 3 1/3 innings. Edwar Ramirez (4-1) got the win with his 1 1/3 innings of relief, in which he gave up a run on two hits. New York has split its 12 matchups with the Red Sox this season.
(Sports Network) - With their chances for a 14th straight postseason appearance dwindling by the day, the New York Yankees turn to Sidney Ponson to right their ship tonight in the second test of a critical three-game series with the Boston Red Sox at Yankee Stadium. Ponson, though, will be trying to bounce back from a horrific outing in his last start Thursday against Toronto, when he was battered for seven runs and eight hits in just two innings of work. That dropped him to 7-4 on the year and had his earned run average balloon to 4.67. The Red Sox hammered Ponson the last time they faced him, managing seven runs and 10 hits in four innings off the righty . Ponson is a miserable 3-12 lifetime against them with a 6.92 ERA in 21 starts. Boston put the Yankees in an even deeper hole on Tuesday, as Jeff Bailey and Jason Bay drove in two runs apiece to lead the Red Sox to a 7-3 win. Coco Crisp went 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored for the Sox, who have won five of their last seven games and dropped New York six games behind them in the American League wild-card chase. Jacoby Ellsbury and Kevin Youkilis both drove in a run in the win, which pulled Boston within 3 1/2 games of Tampa Bay for the AL East lead after the Rays fell to the Blue Jays on Tuesday. The club still owns a 2 1/2 game lead over the Minnesota Twins in the Wild Card standings. Boston starter Tim Wakefield (8-8) lasted five innings and was touched for all three New York runs on eight hits. The knuckleballer, who was activated from the disabled list prior to the game, was winless in his last six starts versus the Yankees before Tuesday's triumph. Jonathan Papelbon recorded the final four outs for his 34th save of the season. Johnny Damon had a pair of solo homers for the Yankees, who saw their three- game win streak come to a halt. Jose Molina drove in the other New York run Alex Rodriguez finished 0-for-5 and grounded into two double plays, including one with the bases loaded. Andy Pettitte (13-10) took the loss after he was roughed up for six runs on 10 hits while lasting 4 2/3 frames. Getting the call for the Sox tonight will be veteran right-hander Paul Byrd, who has won five of his six starts since the All-Star break. Byrd picked up his first win since being acquired from Cleveland against Toronto on Friday. He allowed four runs and six hits in six innings to improve to 8-11 to go along with a 4.61 ERA. Byrd has faced the Yankees 10 times over the course of his career, going 2-5 with a 4.90 ERA in those contests. Boston has won seven of its 13 matchups with the Yankees this season.

Should I
Go out and party tonight or stay home and watch the game? Odds are I’ll regret doing one of them tomorrow morning.

sorry all...
I was in and out of meetings all morning, trying to follow the updates on the iphone. I had a few of those…excuse me to use the toilet deals, just to keep up with the score.
Hopefully, things at work will be slower and I can contribute to tomorrows game.
Great win BTW, my question is this, why did they pull Wake after 5?
by sydneysox on Aug 26, 2008 10:58 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I don't know.
Possibly because this was his return from injury, and they didn’t want to give him more than 80 pitches or so.

I saw Francona's post-game comments
he said since it was Wake’s first start after the DL, they didnt want to push him too far— I think Francona said Wake threw 80 pitches or so & they thought that was a enough for his 1st time out…
