In the Rays' game, the key play was an interference call on Willy Aybar who grazed against AJ Pierzynski during a pickle play in between 2nd and 3rd. Upon replay, the Rays' announcers were getting all angry because they thought it was a blown call. I could see where they were coming from, since it appeared that Pierzynski had attempted to elbow Aybar as he ran past him.
But, to me, it looked more like he was trying to turn around and realized just as he started that Aybar was running up along that side of him after tossing the ball the shortstop to continue the pickle.
If you were running back and forth with several sharp turns (like a suicide), and you were focused on trying not to get tagged out, it would be kind of easy to forget which way a player is likely to run after he stops chasing you.
I'm not trying to be an apologist, but it seemed like a possibility. It might have even started out as an innocent turn and when he realized he could try to get out the easy way, Pierzynski might have tried to exaggerate the contact. What do you think?
