Yeah, but he has good numbers against Halladay if I remember it right

But, really, no point for him to be leading off right now. The line-up looked better with Drew there.

Manny's a HoFamer based on his prime years

he’s no longer in his prime.

and considering his fielding abilities, he’s not as strong of a HoF candidate as most people believe.

my blog // calling BJ Upton lazy is lazy // past results do not guarantee future performance

by Sky Kalkman on Aug 16, 2008 7:51 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Manny had a down year last season

But even so, he OPSed .881. On a bad season. Manny is the second best RHH of our time, behind only Albert Pujols (come on, Pujols hitting with the monster on his left would be something else). If that’s not HOFer, I just don’t know what is.

On fielding, you’re very much right on. But I think that Manny bat made up for that.

It's the same old story. Boy finds girl, boy loses girl, girl finds boy, boy forgets girl, boy remembers girl, girls dies in a tragic blimp accident over the Orange Bowl on New Year's Day.

right, but if you're comparing what you can expect from Bay and Manny...

…over the rest of 2008 and 2009, you don’t give Manny credit for 1999 through 2002.

Over the past few years he’s about a 145 OPS+ hitter. Bay’s at about 125-130.

Frank Thomas matches Manny's OPS (155ish)

(in response to the RHH comment)

Arod’s about five points behind, although both Manny and Thomas are getting docked a few points due to OPS+ underrating walks. Arod less so.

Pujols is at 168. Sheesh.

Manny is a better hitter than A-Rod

While A-Rod is the better all around player. I forgot about Big Frank, who’s close to Manny but a little behind him for my money.

I said he's the better player because

agree about Arod. as for Thomas...

He has a higher peak than Manny, but nowhere near the number of All-Star level seasons. for seven straight years, Frank Thomas put up 6+ batting wins. Manny has zero at that level. But Frank has only one more season above 2.5 batting wins, while Manny has four seasons above 5.0 wins, eight seasons above 4.0, and thirteen above 3.0.

(Using B-Ref’s battings wins above average)

my blog // calling BJ Upton lazy is lazy // past results do not guarantee future performance

by Sky Kalkman on Aug 16, 2008 8:22 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Frank Thomas creates 8.8 runs each game for his career

While Manny is good for 8.9. That’s insane. Just for kicks, Vizquel creates half that much. Manny’s career EqA is .326, while Thomas is .336. Other numbers are close, but mainly they all point at Thomas being better. I guess I was wrong about this, and underrated Big Frank a bit.

It's the same old story. Boy finds girl, boy loses girl, girl finds boy, boy forgets girl, boy remembers girl, girls dies in a tragic blimp accident over the Orange Bowl on New Year's Day.

by MerryGoByeBye on Aug 16, 2008 8:33 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

of course, Thomas isn't a defensive asset, either

and i wouldn’t be surprised if Manny’s better overall, given that he used to be at least league-average with the glove.

my blog // calling BJ Upton lazy is lazy // past results do not guarantee future performance

by Sky Kalkman on Aug 16, 2008 8:35 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Considering that even top players only bat about 4-6 times per game, and only hit or walk in 40% of opportunities, I think your numbers are very wrong. Manny was not hitting three three-run homers every game he played for us, that’s for sure.

by 0157H7 on Aug 16, 2008 8:35 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I guess that means

If Manny batted 27 times per game, he would create this many runs every single game. That’s how I see it, but I could be wrong.

It's the same old story. Boy finds girl, boy loses girl, girl finds boy, boy forgets girl, boy remembers girl, girls dies in a tragic blimp accident over the Orange Bowl on New Year's Day.

by MerryGoByeBye on Aug 16, 2008 8:41 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

right.

R/27 is fun, but not particularly accurate. It overrates OBP — since run-scoring isn’t linear as OBP goes up, you really should only credit Manny’s/Thomas’s OBP as it interacts with the other eight hitters, not how it would interact with itself.

Defense rarely figures in the voting

Manny’s career hitting makes him an easy HOFer: 515 HR .313 AVG/ .410 OBP/ .591 SLG.

Manny has the 78th best AVG all time. He is 36th in OBP, and 8th in SLG. He is 10th in OPS, only Ruth, Williams, Gehrig, Foxx, Greenberg, and Hornsby are better and in the HOF. Bonds, Pujols, and Helton are also better.

Nobody votes on defense.

Ells leading off needs to stop for a while

It's the same old story. Boy finds girl, boy loses girl, girl finds boy, boy forgets girl, boy remembers girl, girls dies in a tragic blimp accident over the Orange Bowl on New Year's Day.

I agree, Ells is not a leadoff hitter yet.

Awesome

Makes great grabs, and steals some hits. Doesn’t have a good arm, but better than Milky’s.

Melky has a much better arm

But Melky is in Triple-A

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

doesn't take much to outhit Melky, either

throwing arm is overrated as an important skill, too. range is more important.

Really?

God, I remember Milky with a weak arm. He really has a a good arm?

He is decent defensively with a pretty good arm

He’ll end up as a 4th OF.

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

he's about league-average overall, so he deserves to start for some team

just not a team with a $200MM payroll or a team in serious contention.

Sox will win tomorrow with Beckett on the mound, oh, and everytime Wells or Wilkerson makes a catch to rob the Sox of a hit, someone should stab them in the knee caps to deter them.

Game Over?

I’m too late. I’ll bring me and my good luck tomorrow.

He who hesitates is tagged out between first and second base.

Why do they decide to suck when they play the mediocre Blue Jays?

by redoctober on Aug 17, 2008 1:50 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Well, this game is over already.

There's a new game thread up.

if you want to vent over there. Still time for a Sox comeback.
