Next "C"

Last night watching the game, it was reported on ESPN by Erin Andrews that Tek said "After his duties with the Sox, he wouldn't have a problem handing Pedroia the 'C'".  Which brings the question, who should be the next Captain (Ped, Youk, Ells)?

I really like the way Pedroia works hard and gets after it.  If I was a father and had a kid playing ball, I would want him to watch DP.

We need a Captain?

Tek IS the captain, and when he’s gone I don’t think the Sox should get another.

It's the same old story. Boy finds girl, boy loses girl, girl finds boy, boy forgets girl, boy remembers girl, girls dies in a tragic blimp accident over the Orange Bowl on New Year's Day.

I don't believe anymore players in the MLB are going to wear a captain's C anymore...

Varitek is the last capitain from before they removed them from the uniforms, I believe. The second to last guy was in Kansas City but left (either traded or as a FA).

Don't question my choice of teams, or I will have to go all troll on you.

You are thinking of Mike Sweeney.

I'd give it to Lowell

If they did opt to pass the “C” on, I don’t believe Pedroia is the man for it. Don’t get me wrong, he’s a great and exciting player to watch, but he doesn’t have the major league experience. If Lowell is able to stick around, I think he would be the one to receive it. He’s a veteran, great club house presence, and a leader.

Oh Captain my Captain

There are currently 3 captains in MLB that I am aware of, Tek, Jeter, and Konerko. Only one still wears the “C”, Tek.

I honestly don’t see anyone on the team being capable to step up and be captain. The way I judge who would make a good captain is who could I see being a Manager someday? Varitek I feel like is the only one with the leadership and knowledge of the game enough to do this. I mean, Pedroia is amazing and my favorite player but right now I can’t picture him being a Manager in the future. Who knows though how things can change in the next couple of years.

I think Beckett would be a good guy to hold the C, or Wakefield. If you want an everyday player, Lowell or Ortiz.

by Randy Booth on Aug 15, 2008 11:11 AM EDT reply actions

I would probably go with Papi or Wake. Pedroia should get the C after Papi.

My list

1. Josh Beckett
2. Dustin Pedroia
3. Kevin Youkilis
4. Jason “Call Me Crazy” Bay
5.David Ortiz

I don’t think our captain should only hit and not play the field (How would YOU word it?)

Jason will be captain-ready in a few years. You might think, well, we just got him three years ago, should he be captain? Well, Josh Beckett.

Youk wouldn’t be the best model: (slams helmet) ****in’ umpire! **** HIM!!

Pedie is a good leader, but he still hasn’t had much experience. 3 more years and he will be a perennial all-star, though….

Beckett. He’s our ace (on odd-numbered years) and is a good leader.

He who hesitates is tagged out between first and second base.

Beckett

I am a big fan of Beckett and he has good leadership ability, but I don’t think he can be captain. For the same reason as Ortiz not being on the field, Beckett is only playing one out of every 5 games and most of the time not for the complete game.

Captains

Being captain is about commanding leadership on the field. Being the manager in the field is a difficult job from a personal relationship point of view. The only one I see doing this well is Lowell since he has the veteran aura and appears calm and mature.
One stupid question…what DOES a captain do in modern day baseball? I mean I can see what Tek does because he’s so integral to the defense and pitching and in many senses is like a line coach behind the plate. That is a set of characteristics that is somewhat unique to him (which is why he’s so valuable even if he’s not hitting well) and I can see other players like Jeter filling this role in different ways on other teams. But do we need a captain once ’Tek retires/leaves?

You can take the boy outta Boston, but you can't take the Boston outta the boy.

What the captain does

The captain is supposed to be the leader of the team in situations when the Manager can’t. Kind of like the Quarterback is who everyone turns to when they need guidance in football.

An MLB captain can’t be “assigned” to anyone, they need to earn it. IF we have another captain after Tek it will be the players decision not Titos or Theos. IF one of the field players on the team steps up and commands the respect and leadership of the other players on the field then we could have a Captain. IF no one steps up to such a role we will not have a Captain. It is that simple.

no need for captain

I think in baseball a ‘C’ should be given only when it’s obvious the person already has the title in all but name. Like ‘Tek on the Sox or Jeter on the Yankees. Or Yaz back in the day. The Sox went 15 years without having any captain, between Rice’s retirement and ‘Tek getting the title. Another 15 years wouldn’t bother me.

Agreed

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

Absolutly give it to Pedoria

and do it right now. I am sorry but Tek doesn’t deserve to have it any more. I wouldn’t listen to a guy hitting under .230. Sorry Tek your days are numbered.

Can we DH for Tek?

I’m pretty sure the pitchers can hit better.

?

No way. Tek has the intangibles, he manages the game like no other catcher in baseball. He has caught four no hitters, the only catcher ever to do so and thats not luck. He has a veteran presence in the clubhouse and is an obvious great role model for the younger players. Sometimes you don’t need to be swinging the best lumber on the team to be looked at as the leader.
