Sox acquire smoke, mirrors, PED-user, kooky delivery.
Found this one out by following the livechat on MLBTR.com.
Byrd has averaged just under 6 IP per start, or for those scoring at home, more than Clay Buchholz. Byrd could be available to start probably Thursday or Friday. Would it be that strange to see him start opposite Roy Halladay instead of Buch on Friday night?
From a baseball perspective, this makes sense. Byrd is a better option for right now than Buch. The Sox will send the Clevelands a PTBNL or cash later this year.

I do not feel good about this. I would much rather of tried out Bowden than going to a pitcher who hasn't been that great, ever.
Or at least not that I’m aware of.
PS: At least we could make him play outfield :) (inside joke)

Sox don't want to rush Bowden.
He hasn’t exactly dominated AAA, and him being the Masterson of 09 is a much more likely way of him getting his first shot in the bigs.

We didn't rush Buch at all
And besides, the two pitchers are completely different. Buch was much more polished coming out of college and more advanced as a pitcher than Bowden was coming out of high school. Bowden still needs work in the minors to refine his three pitches and get his changeup figured out. Buchholz, in the middle of last year, was simply dominating AAA opponents. He had nothing left to prove. Bowden is a completely different case, where he still has development that is needed. Also, we don’t need a great pitcher being our No. 5 starter, just a league average one (one who’ll give you about a 4.5 era), which is exactly what Paul Byrd is. I love the move because it gives Buchholz more time to figure out his whole deal with his confidence and what not, and we don’t have to rush anyone to the majors to fill his spot.

The end of your comment is what I was talking about.
I meant this year when we sent him down and then called him back up. He should have stayed down until he could throw any of his pitches at anytime to the AAA batters.

Maybe he is a 1-3 start pitcher who would then go to the bullpen.
It could be a message to Buch:
“We think we have a better chance of winning with Paul Byrd on the mound. PAUL B-Y-R-D. If you don’t get your act together, you will be sent down for the rest of the year, including the post season. Now go find Tek, and start throwing that fastball to his glove, dammit!”

From MLB.com:
“He’s 4-0 with a 1.24 ERA in four starts since the All-Star break.”
Um…yeah, I’ll definitely take that over Buchholz.

Welcome to Over the Monster and SB Nation.
He’ll regress to his below-average self again soon. I actually just though of something: could Byrd be someone that they are picking up to swing along with some other players/cash to an NL team? The Mets, Dodgers, and Cardinals could all stand to gain some bullpen help, and Florida needs pitching too.
Something along the lines of Byrd, Buch, and Bard for Glaus and Aaron Miles would make sense if Lowell is really injured and we don’t want to call up Lars yet.
Or we could do Byrd, Buch, Bard, and cash (for A.Jones contract) for Dewitt and Kemp

Before anybody asks about the rotation...
Put Masterson back in for now. When Wake returns, put Masterson back in the bullpen and keep Zink and Wake in the rotation, just spaced apart so that they don’t start back to back.

Umm..
It’s kind of impossible to do that. When you move a pitcher from a starter to a reliever or reliever to starter, they need to have time to work up stamina. When going from a starter to a reliever, one needs to be able to get the stamina to pitch consecutive games, and when going from a reliever to a starter one needs to get the stamina to throw 6-7 innings. That’s why Masterson needed a couple of weeks to switch. You can’t just continue to switch back and forth from starter to reliever, and he is staying as a reliever for the rest of the season, and that is not going to change. What’s your issue with Byrd anyways? He’s been about a 4.5 ERA pitcher, which is GREAT for a fifth starter, and can really help us. What’s the problem?

Agreed
Can’t switch Masterson, too late for that. Byrd will be a good dependable 5th starter and maybe better.

It's also a hedge
just in case Wake can’t come back in two weeks.
I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

my sentiments exactly
Buchholz may be a great pitcher someday, but the Sox need somebody right now.

Am I the only one who immediately though Zink was a former PED user when I saw the headline?
The first two things fit him, and I don’t know about the last (can’t seem to find any video of the guy).

Good pickup
The Sox needed somebody this week and Byrd is okay. As some have said here, he’s a dependable fifth guy – which is more than what we have now…..so I’m pleased. I know Boston gave Freddy Garcia a look but he signed with someone else.
Byrd is no star, but he’s a veteran, a good guy who should fit in with the guys, and least he won’t get nervous like some untested rookie. Speaking of that, I am so rooting for this kid (Zink) tonight.

I'm happy
He’s a nice 5th starter.
