Longoria to DL for Rays

The Rays thought it was just a bruise, but his wrist is actually fractured. Aybar had a great day for them yesterday against the M's, but I can't see him keeping up that performance for two weeks. They are calling up a prospect by the name of Justin Ruggiano, who was called up earlier this year when Carlos Pena went down for a while. If we are going to pull ourselves back up to first place in one-two weeks, now would be the time.

Our schedule for the next 14 days consists of the remaining game @ CWS, 3 vs. TEX, 3 vs. TOR, 3 @ BAL, off day, and 3 @ TOR.

The Rays' schedule for the next 14 days consists of an off day, 3 @ OAK, 3 @ TEX, 3 vs. LAA, another off day, and 3 @ CWS.

Depending on who the pitchers are, we could easily win 10-11 games out of that stretch, and the Rays will probably win only 7-8 games.

We should gain around 2.5 games on them, which would put us in position to overtake them if they have one bad series, as long as we win our final series at Yankee Stadium, during which the Rays play Toronto.

Opportunity for Ells?

If Jacoby has an ‘07-type end to the season, could he supplant Longoria’s shoo-in position for the AL ROY?

Wait... Maybe not YAY!!!!

Other AL rookies:
David Murphy, TEX
Alexi Ramirez, CWS
Brad Ziegler, OAK
Joba Chamberlain, NYY
Nick Blackburn, MIN
Carlos Gonzalez, OAK

Ells is gonna have to hit above the .269 mark he’s at right now (probably closer to .350 for the rest of the year), hit at leatst 7 more HR (a possibiltiy; he only has 7 now, but he slump mightily for a long time), get a lot more RBIs (bottom of the order gettiing on base consistently = LOL), and steal around 60 bases (up to 37 now; again would have been higher if not for slump). Other than that, I think it’s between Murphy, Longoria, Joba, and maybe Ramirez.

Chamberlain is on the DL until late August, which probably hurts his candidacy.
David Murphy is out because of that huge collision with I-Rod; his numbers also aren’t that great, aside from HR totals (15).
Ziegler is a non-closing reliever, although his scoreless streak is pretty cool. Nobody even considered Okajima for ROY last year, and he was friggin awesome.
Alexi Ramirez has no plate discipline, although that might not batter to voters.
Blackburn is a possibility. He’s been a great starter thus far.

I think Longoria probably has this award in the bag. Ellsbury would have to hit everything the rest of the way, steal a base every time he’s on, steal home a couple times, make a webgem each night, and pick up a few saves as a reliever to even be in the running for ROY.

That's a bit of a stretch for what Ells would have to do...

I wish voters would take into consideration his production from last year too. Although if that happened, Joba would also have a case. Murphy has also had a ton of RBI’s but that might the result of having RISP almost every AB

Depends if Year means one year to the day or 2008. :)

If he doesn't go over the limit for AB's this season...

Which he has only 16 more of until he reached the 130 mentioned below.

That is a very large loss for the Rays combined with Crawford. I am not saying they can’t win the division but this certainly will make it much harder. The Red Sox are not playing that great but they are still a very good team and if Ellsbury can turn it around they will be in great shape foe the stretch run. As for the Yankees, all I can say is see ya next year.

Is Joba still a rookie?

I thought he isn’t technically classified as one.

by Gnick on Aug 11, 2008 11:31 PM EDT reply actions

These are the requirements: no more than 130 AB, 50 innings pitched, or 45 days on the active roster of a club before September 1. As far as I can tell, Joba’s time in 2007 doesn’t violate any of these conditions.

I believe he is as a result of Cashman's OCD command on his innings last year.

Fantasy is for people who can't be obsessive about the actual team they root for.

You wanted Crawford and Longoria each to hit 4 hrs in every game against Boston, but have every man on the Sox score as long as they weren’t on your oppenent’s team? That’s just screwed up dude.

I like how all you Rays fans accuse us of stuff.

Get RJ over hear so I can kick his @$$ again. If you can’t tell that both of my cheering comments were sarcastic, yall have issues.
