Twins @ Sox. Game Dos.

Minnesota Twins at Boston Red Sox, Jul 8, 2008 7:05 PM EDT

W-L ERA WHIP K BB
2008 - Nick Blackburn 7-4 3.78 1.31 58 16

V.

W-L ERA WHIP K BB
2008 - Jon Lester 7-3 3.21 1.31 76 41

Lineemups.

Blackburn and Lester have enjoyed similar success this season, but have gone about it different ways. Blackburn walks no one. Lester is a tougher to hit. Identical WHIPs? Let's see how identical they'll be after tonight.

Oh. And notice no Wake. But no Varitek either. Moss in for Coco with Ells sliding over to CF.

As a manager for a championship team should do,

I applaud Francona for taking out Varitek and Crisp. There has to be a penalty for consistent poor performance, and putting marginal and poorly performing players on some kind of notice is important. When they return, maybe they will try harder, and if not, get plans in place to minimize them!

That being said, why did Francona let Lugo play so long last year when he was, what hittless in 40 trips or something like that. Maybe this Varitek and Crisp removal is giving Francona too much credit, but I hope not??

Yeah, Tito should have had Lugo shot during the first half last year

But then, he might have missed out on a SS that hit .280 after the ASB.

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

And remember that last season we didn't even talk much about Lowrie

Lugo would have been replaced by Cora, and that’s awful and scary and creepy and stupid.

True

Lester also threw quite a bit in the first against the MFY and then settled in. The Twins aren’t the most patient team. If Lester pounds the zone, he should be fine pitch count-wise.

Law school sux

Lord, how I second that.

It's the same old story. Boy finds girl, boy loses girl, girl finds boy, boy forgets girl, boy remembers girl, girls dies in a tragic blimp accident over the Orange Bowl on New Year's Day.

Why take out Drew for defense?

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

Just remember, Crisp would have been hitting instead of Moss

on most nights, and you know what would have happened then. The same thing as happened with Lugo. It makes a difference, and it is time to break apart the zero momentum potential of Crisp, Varitek, and Lugo. Keep Moss in there over Crisp for one thing!!

by NG on Jul 8, 2008 9:43 PM EDT reply actions

Agreed

But none of this would have mattered had not Manny finally gotten a big hit.

by Drugs Delaney on Jul 8, 2008 10:01 PM EDT reply actions

Only partly correct, IMO!

I know you realize that having a dead end cliff in hitters 7,8,9 can undo any effort by the first 6 in a close game as happened against NY the other night. What you say is true, but the bottom of the order cannot be such a black hole as has been the case with Crisp, Varitek, and Lugo. I personally do not believe this team can repeat as champions unless that mementum sucking void is dealt with permanently!
