Crazy idea
Should we see what the Royals might want for Miguel Olivo?
He’s been throwing out runners like crazy, hitting relatively well, and has a reasonable club option for next season.
He doesn’t block pitches well, if THT’s WP+PB/G data can be trusted as a barometer.
Does anyone think Varitek could (re)learn to catch Wake? Maybe he catches Wake and Daisuke (another one with a propensity to uncork some wild ones) and Olivo catches Becks, Lester, and Buch? Is this too strange an idea?

He’s no spring chicken, and hasn’t been phenomenal, but has been better than both of our catching options at the plate. Doesn’t seem like he should cost anything terribly significant.

Sure.
But Bowden and Buch etc. have been thrown around for all the Texas kids. This guy is less club/cost-controlled and not as highly-regarded. But still performing better than our craptastica situation. I feel like I’m being most unfair to Kevin Cash here.
I’m not saying he’d be gotten for “nothing” but it wouldn’t be someone we’d almost definitely regret a few years down the line.

Morris: 7-4 3.80 ERA (similar to Andy Pettitte – not a HOFer).
Schilling: 11-2 2.23 ERA

You just cannot have 1/3 of the hitting order incompetent and win too many.
Scoring opportunities only come around a few times in most good games, and just six decent hitters cannot bring home the bacon often enough to win enough games to be champions! Having such inept hitters in the 7,8,9 places in the order just kills this limited momentum and prevents champions. Count on it.
I mean why not at least scatter these three bozos throughout the order if they have to be in there so that there isn’t such a dead space with the three hitting one after another. At least try that, but better would be to get rid of at least Lugo and Crisp and maybe consider Varitek for retirement after this year!
