To recap
Dustin extended his hit streak to 13 games with a single he tried to stretch into a double (but failed) in the first. Drew doubled, Manny walked, but Lowell struck out to end it. Masterson had two assists in the bottom of the first as he got two weak grounders to the mound from Gardner and Jeter, and struck out Abreu… 1-2-3.

From Rotoworld:
The New York Post is reporting that Cliff Lee will start the All-Star Game for the AL squad.
Someone isn’t going to be invited to the TBS Christmas party. The Post is revealing the names of the All-Star starters the day before they were set to be announced tomorrow. According to George King, the AL starters are C Joe Mauer, 1B Kevin Youkilis, 2B Dustin Pedroia, 3B Alex Rodriguez, SS Derek Jeter, OF Manny Ramirez, OF Josh Hamilton, OF Ichiro Suzuki and DH David Ortiz. Milton Bradley is expected to be the replacement for Ortiz in the lineup. The Post also says the plan is for Mariano Rivera to pitch the last inning of the game.

But for the NL:
The New York Post has learned that Brandon Webb will start the All-Star Game for the NL.
Voted in as starters were C Geovany Soto, 1B Lance Berkman, 2B Chase Utley, 3B Chipper Jones, SS Hanley Ramirez, OF Alfonso Soriano, OF Kosuke Fukudome and OF Ken Griffey Jr. Webb is something of a surprising choice to start given his recent struggles, but he’s still as deserving of the honor as anyone. Also likely considered were Edinson Volquez, Ben Sheets and Tim Lincecum.

The most classic momentum sucking example of all time!
There you have the perfect example of how totally inept 7,8,9 position hitters can cost a team dearly. Get used to it because if changes are not made, this will be a recurring nightmare. Wasn’t there anyone who could pinch hit for any of these 3 offensive duds? I mean you knew, you ansolutely know, this was going to happen once Youk was through batting!

For example, just now
Tampa had a runner on third with no outs and Iwamura, Crawford, and Upton stranded him. That’s the top of their order. See, NG, this happens to everyone. It’s a long season. You shouldn’t treat every game as if it’s a matter of life and death.
I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

Why wait and then find out this current team version can't do it??
Look at the excellent current fanpost by jjbooth74, as that says a lot of it!
I may be a bit pessimistic, but you are too willing to sit back and sit by while constant lousy play by a few at the end of the order jeopardize the entire team effort. You know these 7, 8, 9 hitters are very weak offensively, and this seasons will not be easy down the stretch. Why not intervene now and try to fix serious offensive problems that are quite obvious to anyone willing to be a bit objective??
by NG on Jul 5, 2008 11:48 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Coco will not be playing after Papi is back
Tek is the team captain, and there’s really none better option out there to replace Lugo (Lowrie may just not be ready yet). So just relax and hope Tek can get his swing back, that Papi will be back soon and that Lowrie can come up and be an upgrade over Lugo in the future.
It's the same old story. Boy finds girl, boy loses girl, girl finds boy, boy forgets girl, boy remembers girl, girls dies in a tragic blimp accident over the Orange Bowl on New Year's Day.
by MerryGoByeBye on Jul 6, 2008 1:36 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
You aren't just "a bit pessimistic"
You rant. You only post when the team loses. Be realistic—there really isn’t much the team can do right now.
Tek is the catcher and, as MGBB states, there is no other option. The Sox aren’t going to sit their captain in favor of Kevin Cash, an awful hitter. There aren’t any better catchers available. The FO isn’t going to gut their farm system for a young catcher who may not pan out.
Lowrie may be an option, but only as a replacement for Alex Cora—and I can’t see the Sox calling him up at mid-season to sit on the bench. If they call up Lowrie expect it to be later rather than sooner, so as not to hurt his development. However, this is the one move the FO can make right now.
As for Coco, he is the 4th OF. The only reason why he is starting right now is because Papi is hurt and Manny is DHing. Hopefully, he’ll be back on the bench in a few weeks, spot-starting and pinch-running.
My only criticism of Francona yesterday was pinch-running Moss for Manny, although I understand it: Manny has a bad hamstring and was the tying run. If the team was healthy, Coco would be running there and Youk or Drew would be the 7th hitter.
The fact is Cora and Cash aren’t better than Lugo or Tek. Objectivity doesn’t mean howling about how this player sucks or that player sucks the life out of the team. I was hoping for a SF, fluke hit, WP, HBP, or walk when Coco and Tek were up, knowing full well that they are awful situational hitters.
Considering their injuries, the Sox are in pretty good shape right now—speaking objectively. Tampa is on pace for 101 wins. While they are a good team, they are clearly playing over their heads. They have won 20 of their last 30 games. They won’t do that all season. But, if they do, tip your cap to them.
I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.
by Drugs Delaney on Jul 6, 2008 10:22 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Ranting??
Look, I am 60 and have spent much of my life as a behind the scenes Red Sox fan because the team was so bad for so long and did not seem to want to do better. I have no need to scream and yell when the Sox do well because that alone satisfies me, and I enjoy watching good, well managed baseball teams. If the Sox are hopeless, then I tune off and out. However, when they have a chance, I wake up and feel the need to scream at the old Sox passive acceptance of mediocrity behavior that went on so long.
You say there is nothing else out there and that nothing else can be done, and maybe you live and study baseball so you know. However, I do not live and study baseball, so I do not know this, and am not willing to just take your word. I WANT LUGO, CRISP AND MAYBE VARITEK OUT, IN FAVOR OF EVEN AN UNKNOWN COMMODITY THAT CAN NOT BE ANY WORSE THAN THESE 3! These 3 together will kill my happiness because other than those 3, this may/could be the best offensive team in history. These 3 are sucking the momentum away so badly that this is just a slightly above average team with them in the lineup. At the least, why not spread their poor offensive throughout the lineup and not give such a 3 player dead spot in one place. As we saw yesterday, that can lead to nothing even with the bases loaded in no outs. GEEEEEEEZZZZZZZ that pisses me off!
