The Manny Memorial Thread

Share with the Over the Monster community, if you will, your fondest memories of Manny in a Red Sox uniform.

He has been spectacular, and bizarre, and infuriating in equal measure, and he will be sorely missed.

I will start the ball rolling by mentioning the walkoff home run he hammered off K-Rod in Game 2 of the ALDS last year. It was a legendary blow, and I will treasure it for a very long time. Pimping? Damn right. Damn right...

Thanks Manny.

One Manny memory is a funny one. A couple years ago I got tickets right on the third base line in that little corner that jets out. Manny made a catch to end the inning and he threw the ball literally inches over my outstretched glove above my head. I was oh so close to grabbing the ball.

Not a walk-off shot memory, just a little more personal.

Enjoy LA, Manny.

I have a similar one

3 years ago I also got a ticket near the 3b line. It was bottom of the 2nd, I guess, and the guy next to me started to scream ‘MANNY, MANNY’, like, really loud. So he looked back to see who was, and looked DIRECTLY to me, and said something I couldn’t quite understand. Up to these days I don’t know some stuff: If he said something to me and not anyone around me, if he thought I was the one screaming, what he said and if he hates me. :)

It's the same old story. Boy finds girl, boy loses girl, girl finds boy, boy forgets girl, boy remembers girl, girls dies in a tragic blimp accident over the Orange Bowl on New Year's Day.

manny moment

my favorite manny moment, was when he hit 43 hrs, 130 rbis, 44 doubles, 175 hits, and a .308 BA during the 2004 season in which he lead the red sox to their 1st World Series title in 80 years!!

Thankyou for everything Manny, God bless and good luck!!

the handshakes with o-cab.
the greetings at home plate when manny hit another one way the hell out of the park.
the high five (attempt) at fenway south.
the sweet swing.

i will stop now before this goes from man-crush to… something entirely less comfortable.

i won’t miss the bullshit, the bitching, the whining or the, at times, lazy fucking baserunning.

overall, though, it’s been one hell of a ride. many years from now, we’ll be waxing poetic about the 3-4 combo of the early 2000’s to our grandchildren, make no mistake about it.

Manny

I like when he dove to cut of a throw from Johnny Damon against the Orioles, and when he made a catch climbed the wall high fived some guy in the stands than threw the ball in to double off aubrey huff.

I liked it most when

Manny was happy to play for my favorite team…oh wait…

To paraphrase John Sterling in his attempt to calm down Suzyn Waldman: ” in life…all good things come to an end”.

I really enjoyed the Ramirez-Ortiz tandem but it had to end sometime. I wish the ending had been different but it is what it is.

"You know," Girardi said, shrugging his shoulders, "it didn't work."

britsofsox?

i thought you wanted manny gone now you are saying it’s a blow?? wow

by BostonNation on Jul 31, 2008 6:22 PM EDT up reply actions

I will miss him. It is better that he goes than is re-upped for 2009.

I think Bay is a good fit.

These are all simple concepts. Somehow in putting them together, we have lost you along the way.

Actually

My favorite Manny moment was when he ran on the field waving a US flag after he passed the citizenship test but I couldn’t help think: “what took ya so long”.

"You know," Girardi said, shrugging his shoulders, "it didn't work."

Serious mixed emotions.

Manny has been my favorite baseball player for 8 years. I’ve said it before, that if I could do ANYTHING half as well as he hits a baseball I’d be a happy man. Seriously. It’s been an awesome ride. It’s really breaks my heart that he’s gone…

But… What a dirtbag. I can’t believe this shit. He pulled a hissy fit and deliberately tanked so he wouldn’t have to SETTLE for $20 MILLION next year. What a mutha Fn prima donna. Maybe it’s my work ethic, but if someone pays me to do a job, I’m gonna do my freakin job. I’m not going to get half way through and say “Sorry dude, but I want more money now.” Horseshit.

I blame Boras.

My favorite Manny story (even though it’s hearsay within hearsay within hearsay – a friend of mine from law school met Jose Offerman, who told him this story): When he first came to town, Offerman was showing him around. They were driving along the Commons and Manny was like “wow, this is really nice.” So Offerman said “you should get a place here.” And Manny was like “Do you think I can afford it?” Offerman of course was speechless, because Manny had just signed for $20 million a year.

Manny ain't the only bad man.

manny

manny is filthy rich, you think he gives a crap? he just wants a 4-5 year contract worth close to 100 million$. Manny wants more money thats how he is. Think about it if you got paid 100 mill for 5 years, you’d probably think more about the money and what to spend it on than playing to the best of your potential. manny wants to get paid alot before his career is done. It’s not just manny this happens in NBA, NHL, NFL, very good players get paid alot for their potential and end up not performing to that potential but still get paid. Manny got paid but he also played very well, just look at his stats, but at 36 he wants way too much money

my memories:

holding up his arms after he homers

the pine tar on the batting helmet

his relationship with the monster (love/hate)

the high-five

the annual contract “discussions”

the homer off K-Rod

just… manny being manny

and for some reason, manny hater comes back in my mind…

He who hesitates is tagged out between first and second base.

Mine.

Pimping his HR off of Scott Proctor after the Proctologist had described Manny as an easy out.

F’n deserved, and a solid bomb IIRC.

Every time I hear "Proctologist"

I remember the ASSMAN:

In our lifetime we likely will never see a stronger, more consistent hitter in a redsox uniform than manny ramirez.

by spinz on Aug 4, 2008 2:48 AM EDT reply actions

Cards have an option for 2011.

So 2012, maybe. Unless the Cardinals go into rebuilding mode and try to trade him.

The Yankees will probably be in on him. Theo’s MO is to go for undervalued / cheap sluggers; Drew had all sorts of negatives, and Bay is signed cheaply for the next year plus.

by 0157H7 on Aug 4, 2008 12:28 PM EDT up reply actions

The negatives for Drew being 1) injury history, 2) career NLer, 3) character issues BS.

4) Very inexpressive features
