Edes: Manny Ramirez deal has been done
Gordon Edes from the Globe just reported on NESN that a Manny Ramirez deal has been done but no details are known. More to come.
UPDATE, 4:47 P.M.:
Here is the official lowdown -- as of now:
Red Sox receive:
Jason Bay (from PIT)
Dodgers receive:
Manny Ramirez (from BOS)
Pirates receive:
Craig Hansen (from BOS)
Brandon Moss (from BOS)
Andy LaRoche (from LAD)
Bryan Morris (from LAD)
UPDATE, 4:42 P.M.:
Manny's options for '09 and '10 have been dropped, so he will definitely become a free agent after this season unless the Dodgers decide to sign him early. This from SI.com:
The Red Sox approached Ramirez in advance of their negotiations, and got the OK from Ramirez. He signed off on the paperwork, contingent upon the two $20-million team options for 2009 and '10 being dropped. The move will set the stage for Ramirez to become a free agent this winter.
UPDATE, 4:40 P.M.:
Cafardo reports Craig Hansen and Brandon Moss may be heading to Pittsbu
UPDATE, 4:38 P.M.:
SI.com reports the Pirates will receive four minor league prospects in this trade.
UPDATE, 4:36 P.M.:
Cafardo says Manny doesn't know about the trade yet. Uh oh.
UPDATE, 4:27 P.M.:
Here's the latest: Manny to the Dodgers, Bay to the Red Sox. That's all that is known.
UPDATE, 4:25 P.M.:
Nick Cafardo of the Globe is saying it's more likely Bay is a Red Sox. No other details yet.
UPDATE, 4:23 P.M.:
Jason Bay to the Dodgers? That's the latest from NESN. No doubt it'd have connections with the Sox.

You will be missed Manny
This is even better then trading with the Marlins. The dodgers have a chance of holding on to him, hence keeping him away from the yankees.

From Rosenthal
Pirates outfielder Jason Bay is headed to the Red Sox. The Pirates will receive Andy LaRoche and right-hander Bryan Morris from the Dodgers and outfielder Damien Moss and releiver Craig Hansen from the Red Sox.
NOOOOO, HANSON IS GONE?! Who the heck will I call a boy band member now?

This is like
losing your virginity when you’re drunk. I hate getting caught up in all this trade deadline craze.
Hansen gone? :)
He who hesitates is tagged out between first and second base.

Agreed
I’m sad to see Manny go, he’s a big part of my life (not in the gay way, or maybe just a bit :) ). But lately he was doing too many shit and really wanting out, so I’m glad he got what he wanted.

If that's real
Bad trade for the Bucs, but not so bad as it would have been with the Rays. LaRoche will be a great, great player, but they just drafted a guy who could start at 3b like next season. Brandon Moss is a 4th OF really, and the other 2 dudes are bullpen guys. LA got one of the best players ever, and Boston got one of the best LFs in the game. Sweet going by Theo, I guess.

Alvarez could also be their 1B.
The younger LaRoche may have a better chance at sticking as a starter…

I could be completely off the mark here, but it seems like Boston got shafted.
They way it reads now they gave up, 7 mil, Manny, Moss, and Hansen for Bay.
Bay, a guy hitting .190 agiasnt lefties this year, and hasnt been doing too well since the all star break/

Jason Bay was really the best option in the market, if the Dodgers wouldn't trade Kemp
And let’s not kid around, Bay is not Manny. He’s a bit better than Youk and Drew, however. He’s a good bat, great defender, somewhat young and not expensive. Hansen sucked for us, and Moss didn’t have room on the team. Manny was going to be gone by the year’s end, or maybe before. So, really, it’s looking like an awesome trade by Theo.

I see it as a fair exchange; not a robbery or shaft – Manny had to go; wanted to go- the Sox have a LF for the next year as well – younger & supposedly better fielder. I wrote supposedly bc I dont know anything about Bay.
Despite the Lugo/Gagne dealings; I think the front office knows what they are doing. Time to move on like any bad relationship – no when to say when.

Why are so many people saying the Sox gave up too much?
We don’t have room for Moss, and Hansen sucks for us. Just how much is too much?

The Sox didn’t get ‘hosed’ at the deadline last year. Gagne sucked, yes, but we lost little to nothing.

David Murphy, who has a .312 OBP?
You should at least know shit about your team, dude. I can’t see how the Sox miss Murphy.

But he’s not a bona fide prospect. No one is bona fide before they can buy tobacco.
