Teixeira to Angels.

ESPN (Olney) just reported: Casey Kotchman + Stephen Marek to the Braves.

In the very short-term, excellent for us. I can't forsee Teixeira being in tonight's lineup, and Kotchman won't be. In the less short-term, not great. Teixeira adds legitimacy to a lineup that aside from being annoying as crap really doesn't strike fear into anyone.

In the long-term? Well, we'll see if the Angels pony up and try to blow him away with an extension offer this season.

Bad thing for us

Tex is much, MUCH better than Kotchman (but Casey is cheaper, however).

It's the same old story. Boy finds girl, boy loses girl, girl finds boy, boy forgets girl, boy remembers girl, girls dies in a tragic blimp accident over the Orange Bowl on New Year's Day.

Bad for us long-term

It is going to be harder for us to sign him this off-season if the Angels are now one of the teams competing for his services. And in my estimation, if we let Manny walk, we’re going to need an all-star bat to replace him, and I’m not talking about Pat Burrell.

Risky move for the Angels

Tex is an upgrade over Kotchman. But he is likely to test the free agent market after the season. LA may have paid a high price for two months or so of Teixeira. If they don’t win it all and Tex walks, it’s a bad move.

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

This was not a bad move at all for the Angels. While I agree that they are essentially “renting” Teixeira for the rest of the season, they couldn’t have picked a better time to add a big bat in their lineup, and are now clearly the front runners to take the AL pennant.

The only question-mark the Halos had this year, was a mediocre (if not pesky and effective enough) lineup, but that has now been filled. While there are arguments that Tex isn’t that much better than Kotchman, the way pitchers approach the two different players is enough to make this one of the scariest batting orders in the league. While Kotchman has been very good (and underrated) over the past season, he does not instill the same amount of fear into pitchers as Teixeira does. Putting a switch-hitter with power in the middle of a lineup already featuring Vlad Guerrero, Torii Hunter, and Garret Anderson, pitchers will now be hard pressed to get through the 3-6 spots unscathed.

And while the Angels have all but clinched the AL West, they have now prepared their team to be in the best position in the playoffs. Assuming they remain atop of the standings in the AL, they will not only have home-field advantage, but will probably be much more rested and healthy than the Sox and Yanks, who have both faced several injuries this season. The two AL East powerhouses also have to deal with the pesky Rays, which could lead to a very tight division and wild-card race, while the Angels don’t have to worry about making the playoffs. This means that late in the season, top pitchers for the Sox and Yanks will be throwing more innings and pitches, going deep into their bullpen, and not being able to use as many off-days for their position players. Meanwhile, the Angels will be sitting pretty atop of the weakest division in the Junior Circuit, and will be primed to clean up in the playoffs.

So I offer an early congrats to the Angels on their inevitable future success. Hopefully, somehow, the Sox will be able to gut it out for the rest of the season and through the playoffs.

FWIW

Marek, just on stats, looks borderline. 24yo, AA, RP, 57 Ks and a 1.29 WHIP in 46 2/3.

Unless he’s been working back from TJ surgery or something, doesn’t seem of high value.

Oh

And perhaps I’m spoiled, but I just can’t see how Kotchman + Marek beats Carter + Hansen/MDC/Masterson.

Carter is an unknown.

Kotchman has proven to be a great glove and just enough bat for 1B.
Masterson + Carter MIGHT’VE worked for us, but do you want to give up Masterson for two months of Tex?

Carter has a .905 OPS in the minors, while Kotchman had a .894

And Carter can play OF, while Kotchman can’t. While, okay, Kotchman is a proven player, and is a fair enough 1B, but he is somewhat overrated, and this other dude the Braves got look average at best. While I wouldn’t trade Masterson (his name just came in my head, sorry), we have better pitching prospects than this guy.

The Braves traded Salty and Andrus for Kotchman with one year of delay, and that’s a BAD move. But maybe I’m just angry, because Tex is one of my favorite players, and I thought we could really get him somehow.

I'm going to paraphrase Pat Gillick.

Maybe if we moved Youk to SS...

:)

In full disclosure, I have fixed my ridiculous spelling mistake in the title.

Again, full disclosure

Saw Olney on ESPN. But apparently Keith Law reported first, according to Extra Bases.

Oh, according to Extra Bases

“Major league sources indicated the Braves extended a Kevin Youkilis-Craig Hansen offer to the Red Sox but the Sox turned it down.”

The Braves are on crack if they really thought the Sox would trade Youk and Hansen for 2 months of Tex.

But see. We "could've" gotten him. :)

I wouldn’t mind Tex either, but the price for us was not great. I’m not sure LAAAAAAngels won’t regret it in the way DD suggests above.

Yep, too high a price for a rental

Kotchman is an okay 1B, but Youk is one of the best.

Defensively, I might get hurt for this

But Kotchman might be better.

He’s not the better hitter. Certainly not the better walker.

Not so sure on Kotchman being the better fielder

Youk is very, VERY good out there, saves a lot of errors. And Kotchman can only play 1B, while Youk is decent at 3B. And Youk is much better a hitter.

I am not convinced

That this move is a HUGE upgrade for the Angels. Teixera is a better player than Kotchman, but is he that much better? Arte Moreno will not pay Teixera the money he will ask in the off season. So they just sent Kotchman to Atlanta for a 2 month rental.

Upgrade, yes…sets them above everyone else in the MLB? No.

Again I keep saying one thing. The Sox have Josh Beckett, in a short series Teixera will not trump Beckett’s 2 starts.

Fact is the Sox need to make sure the Yankees or Rays do not steal the AL East or the WC and then lets see how things play out in Oct..

The Sox could end up getting CWS or Minnesota in the short series and the Yankees and Angels could beat each other up.

You mean Lester's 2 starts, right? ;-)

Beckett is saving himself for the playoffs…=)
