wasted opportunities
bases loaded, nobody out and they score once…...so typical and a big reason we lose games. We leave a ton of runners on base in many games and it usually comes back to bite us in the butt. Hope that’s not the case today.

I was at the game in Seattle, and
when Hansen throw that second ball with the bases loaded, I screamed uncontrollably to THROW STRIKES. I am usually more reserved, but sometimes it is just too much to see incompetence or stupidity at this level! BTW, why was Paps brought in and not left in for the final inning. You all say Francona is a good manager, but maybe, just maybe, he is not so good but has the talent to get him by. Maybe that’s why they lose on the road so much. I was pissed in the first 2 games in Seattle that Francona stayed with tired starters so long, almost costing both games if it were not for Paps.

I'll make this short and simple
(1) Francona is a very good manager.
(2) He did not stick with his starters too long. Lester threw a total of 103 pitches in the first game. Dice-K threw 99 the next night. Both of those are fairly low totals. After 7 innings, Lester had thrown 84 pitches. Only Jimy Williams, a well-known idiot, would have pulled him at that point. As for Dice-K, he was at 89 pitches through 7 innings. Again, it was a no-brainer that he would come out for the 8th.
(3) Papelbon threw 3.2 innings in the series, pitching in every game. There was almost no situation where he was going to go two innings last night, especially since the Sox won the first two games. Francona figured he’d throw Paps in the 11th because the top of the Boston order was due up in the 12th. So, he was playing for the win there. Seattle had already used their best reliever: Morrow. Francona did what good managers do, he played the percentages. Thankfully, it worked out. But even if it didn’t, it was the correct move.

Lester and Dice-K weren’t “getting the crap hit out” of them. When they got into trouble, they were pulled.
Managerial 101: When your bullpen is the weakest link on your team (as it is right now) and your starters have been very efficient all game, you’re crazy if you pull them early. The smart thing to do is ride the starter for as long as you can, which is what Tito did.

I agree with the Paps explanation BUT
I think you are wrong on the 2 starter calls on Monday and Tuesday nights (with all due respect of course!). I saw how hard Lester and Dice-k were being hit just before they were pulled, and I still think Francona overlooked the obvious too long, putting Paps or any reliever in a more tough position than need be. No reliever is always a miracle man, but at least they are fresh when they come in. The starters when they get up to 100 pitches may still be able to throw hard, but not accurately anymore. That is why they are hit or walked on so readily!
Finally while on this subject, I felt/feel bad of Oki because I like the guy but feel the league has figured him out. Hate to say it, but I think his stock has plummeted!

Or at least I feel that way. I could be wrong, but in the last games which Oki played whenever he allowed a baserunner, Tito would pull him. Something he does not do with Hanson, MDC or Aar. Oki doesn’t have great stuff, but when throwing strikes he’s a damn good reliever.
