Papelbon pitching two innings
Can somebody tell me why Tito Francona couldn't use Papelbon for two innings in a close game? How many times - particularly the last month or so - have the relievers blown games in the eighth inning and Pap never even got in the game? Right now he is the ONLY reliable relief pitcher we have, so what's wrong with bringing him in to begin the eight inning of a one-run game? Today was another example. Delcarmen blew another one. If it's not him, it's Oki or Hansen. This is happening on a regular basis.
Actually, I've been thinking about this for awhile since watching an interview last year with "Goose" Gossage who was remarking that it was disgusting how they baby pitchers nowadays and that today's relievers only throw one inning many times. He said he pitched two or three innings most times. So did Bruce Sutter, Dennis Eckersly and others. They had nice careers, too, and didn't have sore arms.
What do you think?

Paps
era for July is about 5.80. I’d say he’s having enough trouble pitching one inning at this time.

It's not like Paps is winning every tied game, or 1 run game situation
It's the same old story. Boy finds girl, boy loses girl, girl finds boy, boy forgets girl, boy remembers girl, girls dies in a tragic blimp accident over the Orange Bowl on New Year's Day.

We don't use Paps enough
He has injury problems, and we just can’t blame Tito for not using him too much. But sometimes I also think he could pitch 2 innings, or at least get the 4 final outs.
Oh, and my sig is a line from Naked Gun, the best movie in the history of mankind. :)

Arm Troubles
Papelbon had arm problems from being overworked before, specifically in 2006. And while yes players did make it pitching more in the past, there were also more injuries. One player we can’t afford to have injured come September and October is Papelbon.

Agreed
We need Paps down the long stretch. We also need other relievers to step up. Paps is great and all, but he can’t do it on his own. Are we going to put him in for every game in the playoffs for 2 or 3 innings? No, we are going to HAVE to put someone else in as well. Tito has been doing a good job so far, he just has no one to work with.

well, if he's a beast
he can pitch two innings just as well as one. How many games have been blown this season in the eighth while Pap sits…..and winds up never in the game? Stop babying these guys…..Pap is young and strong; he can handle it once in a while (not regularly). We are throwing away too many games. My fear is that Fancona is so overly cautious, so concerned about having tall his hurlers fresh for the playoffs…..that he may not even get to the playoffs, to begin with. Hey with two teams as tough competition this year, we can’t afford to keep losing without our best reliever in there, when we need him.

look at our road record
looking at our road record we should of used paps, we are throwing away games not because of paps blowing a few saves but because we are losing badly on the road. I mean we are 2-11 last 13 games on road thats pathetic, we need a win on the road and putting paps in for 2 innings could of snapped the streak against a very good angels team and could of turned things around for us in the next few games on the road

This is what I'm talking about
Last night (Monday), Pap is brought in with one out in the eighth, gets us out of the jam, pitches the ninth and we win.
Stop using those other schmucks in the 8th when the game is on the line. We need wins NOW.

Future Problems
I agree that last night was a good night to use Paps for both the 8th and 9th. It is, however, not a permanent solution. He will have to have more nights off the more we use him for 1+ innings. He will also end up pitching more innings over the course of the season and will be tired come the postseason. We WILL need him if/when we make the postseason.
What we really need is the offense to get some more runs on the board so we can build confidence back up in our bullpen. If someone in the bullpen doesn’t step up soon I don’t even care if we make the playoffs because we won’t even be able to win a game.

Thats what i said, we need PAPS
paps hasnt pitched since all star break, he finally pitches in seattle 2 innings and we win, we need paps especially now wne it really counts. People were saying we cant afford to put paps in for 2 innings cause he might get hurt like last year from playing 2 much…..?? playing to much he didnt pitch since all star break had a week off, we could of used him against the angels game for 8th and 9th inning could of won and avoided a sweep, instead we got swept.
